A resplendent and emotional "Mild und leise" (Liebestod), from Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, sung by Kirsten Flagstad in her early prime and conducted by Hans Lange.
Recording made in 1935, with its sound quality slightly improved and cleaned by me.

I think this is from 1935 and the sound is indeed miraculous - some (uncredited) sound engineer has worked hard on this.

I am very glad you liked it. I myself edited this recording to improve and enhance its sound quality as much as I could. It's great when the result in the end does allow you to listen to that vocal and instrumental beauty much better. ;-)

This is certainly a wonderful performance, but I still love the quieter, more melancholy sound of the older Flagstad in the complete recording with Furtwaengler.

Earlier in her career she sang many (non Wagnerian) roles I would have loved to have heard her in. A friend of mine told me she was even studying Norma at one point. I wonder if that was true.

Yes, it is true. The Met wanted her to sing the part but they finally decided against it

Yes, Edward Johnson wanted her to sing it in late 1935 but she didn't feel comfortable with the Italian and all of the cuts and trans positions they wanted to make. She had never sung an opera in Italian (the Italian roles she had sung were sung in Scandinavia and in one of their languages...Norwegian, Swedish or Finnish)...
