My wife can’t stand Spam, and I know to expect to get balked at whenever I have it. One time while shopping at Walmart, she looked thru the shopping cart to see what we had accumulated at that point and suddenly said, “you just had to get Spam!” And I retorted the only way I could, “No, that’s Great Value Luncheon Meat.”

PLEASE READ - There seems to be a lot of confusion about the video clip I used of the SPAM vs. Treet video. I was using the old footage to show the 'SPAM' as I was describing it in this vide....versus opening another can of SPAM just to show the color and texture in this video. The focus was supposed to be on the SPAM as I was describing it. I love SPAM but there was no need to have two cans opened at the same time just to show the color and texture. SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION.

I think the Great Value stuff crisped and browned better because of the little bit of sugar in it. Browner and crispier at $1 less sold me! Years ago, Spam was not a homogenised meat product like it is now. It had actual cubes and pieces of meat all the way through it with a lot of gelatine in the meat itself and lots of it encasing the meat itself. I don’t remember it being as salty as it is now, but I could be mistaken about that. My mom didn’t buy it often and the only time she fried it was as part of what our family called a “Cowboy Breakfast”. Then we had everything! bacon, scrambled and sunny side up, link and patty sausage, homemade biscuit, milk gravy to go on them, fried potatoes and onions, butter several kinds of jelly including homemade plum from our tree, milk, orange and tomato juice, coffee, and stewed prunes. What a spread that was!! Oh my Mama could cook!! Miss you Mama!!

When I had a job in retail, I was told almost all store brands in retail chains are made by the producer of the name brand - the store just buys so much of it off the producer that they get it for very cheap bulk prices and they can repackage it as their own and resell it for a little cheaper. So in some instances, it is either exactly the same product as the name brand, or slightly modified.
@TheWolfePit

Yes, I have heard the exact same thing! Sometimes you will actually see the 'Big Name' hidden in small print on the label of the generic item! Thanks for watching!

Yep this is the case in the UK too, I have worked in many factories that produce branded products,, but who also produce the cheaper store brand products ,(and a lot of the time it is the exact same product just repackaged in the store brand box) For example, my aunty worked in a yogurt factory and they produced yogurt for one 'upmarket' store here called 'Marks and Spencer's that sold for £2.50 (about $3.25) for 4 pots in its stores, but they also produced a cheaper stores (called Kwik-save) yogurts off the exact same production line, same ingredients etc that retailed at 79p (about $1) for 8 pots. All they did after each production run was change up the packaging for each supermarket company. The only difference was the more expensive store had their yogurt packaged in a premium packaging and the cheaper supermarket was branded in a no frills packaging (which, incidentally, their cheaper products in that store, Kwik-save) were actually branded as 'No Frills'! I've worked in canned goods factories where it's the same practice, they just label the same cans with different brand labels. Even Kellogg's who's slogan is 'We don't make cereals for anyone else' which is technically correct, byt the company that owns Kellogg's also own a company that do make cereals for other companies (store brands etc) by having a separate company under a different brand name to Kellogg's. This company produces supermarket own brand cereals, but they are not necessarily made with the same ingredients or to the same recipes as the Kellogg's branded products.

I'm not sure if it is the same in all countries with Aldi, but at the minute in the UK Aldi, they have an own brand Nutella knock off that is a third of the price of Nutella, but it IS actually Nutella (tastes the same, same distinctive jar, same lid, same date stamps etc) it's about £1.35 ($2-ish,) and the same size jar of Nutella is about £3.50 ($5-ish). It's even on the same shelf as the nutella, right along side it. Another case of big brands producing store branded products. You can buy 3 of the Aldi brand jars for not much more money than one of the branded jars.
@mrbrown2186

@geoffrey calligan hi Geoffrey, ah I see, yes we have similar stores like that here. They have similar practices, locally we have a store called Herons frozen foods and a similar one called jack Fulton's frozen foods. Sometimes they rebrand the stock to there own branding or sometimes just slap an info/price sticker on to the original packaging. It's good because we get to buy branded (McCain's, Birdseye, Findus, Heinz etc) products for a fraction of the cost from other shops. And to be honest, in this day and age with the world being in the state it's in, it's good to be able to save some money for a rainy day!

The name Spam was derived from a contraction of 'spiced ham'. The original variety of Spam is still available today, acknowledged as the 'spiced hammiest' of them all. During WWII and beyond, the meat colloquially became known in the UK as an acronym that stood for *Special Processed American Meat.*

I have a recipe from the 80's and it is a spam patty melt :D It is lovely. Ground up spam seasoned with marjoram and other herbs and spices mixed with some condiments, topped with cheese and baked. It is not healthy (however patty melts are not "healthy" whatsoever) but tasty and filling, and back in the days food shaming was not really a thing. We ate what we was given and we were grateful for that :) And I am not even old.. only at the tender age of 30 😆😅

Great review. The Great Value brand is one of the best quality store brands. (I just had some of their Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving, yummy!). It's so close, I wouldn't be surprised if Hormel makes it for Wallyworld. Now you need to test out store brands like Kroger, HEB, Albertsons, Safeway or other obscure brands.

I have tried both the Great Value brand Luncheon Meat and classic Spam and quite frankly, despite what Wolfe said about there being almost no difference between the two, I didn't care for the GV product. I am not disputing his conclusion or pointing out any defects in anything he said. I just like the Spam better. Maybe it is because I was raised on the stuff. 50 years ago it was incredibly cheap and my parents had me when they were very young, plus Ramen hadn't been invented yet, so we ate a lot of Spam. Perhaps eating Spam brings back fond memories for me.

Mr. Wolfe, easy way to get spam out is once you pull the top off, flip the can use a knife of something pointy and carefully put a small hole in the bottom then blow into it, and the spam will fall right out.

The question that rises in my mind is what cut of pork do they use. I know that SPAM uses pork shoulder and some ham. Does GREAT VALUE use lips and ears? Shoulda found that out.

The reason this luncheon meat might look pinker is possibly due to the sodium nitrite salt they put in it which is a kind of salt used in meats. It is also commonly known as "Prague Powder" or "Pink curing salt".

It's potato starch that makes Spam spongy. Nice to know that it's possible to make basically the same stuff without that filler stuff. Starch is probably needed for Spam's industrial processing, it's easier to industrially manufacture a product that has a baby-food consistency before cooking.
@TheWolfePit

After a friend of mine made me a spam and cheese sandwich for the first time a few months ago, I've started to enjoy Spam more often and might even try making spam cookies. FYI: Most of the time generic store brands are made at the same plant or factory. Big grocery stores pay manufacturers to make a "generic version" of their product (mostly the same ingredients but with a few tiny differences) so the grocery store can sell it cheaper as their store brand. People who want brand name will still buy brand name, but those on a budget/want to save money will buy the store brand. It's a win-win for the grocery stores.

In the Spam vs. Treet vid, you cooked the meat for 4 minutes each side but here you cooked the Walmart meat for 3 minutes a side. You can see at 3:36 that the bottom right piece had less crust on the sides. Speaking of the crust, the 1g of sugar is what made the difference in the crust, and why it was a little bit better.
