Some of these are failed "suicide squeeze", which is where a batter bunts the ball while the runner steals home. Usually the batter is thrown out at first, but gets a run home on this kind of play. But with the ones shown here, the batter misses the bunt and the already-stealing baserunner gets home anyway.

I came here to explain that, but you've already done a perfect job. There is also a "safety squeeze," where the runner on third doesn't start toward home until the bunt is down.

Yes, the "squeeze" is like chess term where the knight can kill two different pieces on next move and defense has to concede one to save the other. The safe play is to first, the risky play is home plate. On offense , popping the bunt up is worse than missing it. Almost always instant double play for defense

I stole home in Little League. The bases were loaded and I was on 3rd. I thought the count was 3 and 2. The pitcher threw a ball, so I trotted to home, catching everyone off guard. Turns out the count was 2 and 2. So you can steal home with blinding stupidity instead of blinding speed.

Damo and Nick, you've probably noticed that two things make stealing home a lot easier. One is a left handed pitcher who has his back to third base. It's easier to get a lead as he has a slower throwing motion to third base and can't keep the runner as close. The other is a pitcher who is choosing to use a full wind-up, which is much slower than pitching from the stretch position. The lefty can't help it. The guy choosing the full wind-up chose poorly.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but close to half of the steals in this video were done against left-handed pitchers. With their back to the runner on third, the runner has a bit of an advantage as a pick off play to third takes more time because of the pitcher having to step off of the rubber, then turn and throw back to third.

The reason so many of these seem to involve an attempted bunt is because they were attempting a play known as the suicide squeeze, where the runner at third breaks for home and the batter tries to lay a bunt down on the first base line.

6:31 Teams often attempt a "squeeze play" with a runner on 3rd. Squeezing involves a bunt. The runner will either wait until the hitter successfully bunts the ball in play (safety squeeze) or will take off before the hitter makes contact (suicide squeeze). It's called a 'suicide' because if the batter fails to make contact, and put the bunt in play, then the runner on 3rd is easily tagged out, most of the time.

It really depends upon whether the pitcher took his planted foot off the rubber or not before starting his pitch motion. If his foot is on the rubber, it is a pitch. If his foot is off the rubber, it is just a throw to the catcher. But, if he had started to pitch then took his foot off the rubber it would be a balk, and all base runners advance one base. Tricking, isn’t it.

The ones that were bunts were failed suicide squeeze plays. Suicide squeeze plays are when the runner from third "steals home" and the batter tries tu bunt so that he is out at first but the runner scores. Most of the time if the batter misses the bunt, the runner is out, but sometimes they may end up stealing it.

My favorite of of these is at 8:00 where the runner steals home because of the lolipop throw from the catcher. They were totally caught off guard. You can even here someone shout HEEEEYYY. it's pretty funny A lot of times its pre planned because of the situation. Usually a left handed pitcher (since his back is to third base. with a slow delivery and a great baserunner on third. The hitter bunting is called a suicide squeeze. Basically a sacrifice bunt. Think of it like a sac fly. The player on third takes off and is basically on home plate by the time the bunt is made. The reason there are so many attempted bunts is this is because they were failed suicide squeezes were the baserunner scored anyway.

At 2:29 you ask if it was a pitch. Yes, anything thrown in the direction of the catcher is a pitch. The reason for throwing it out of the strike zone is so that the hitter cannot lay down a bunt and allow the runner to score anyway with no play at the plate.

I saw other commenters mention the suicide squeeze, the other common type of steal is that first and third play the last few clips showed. Runner on first goes to second drawing the throw, if they don't throw it's a free base and you got 2 runners in scoring position, if they do then you get a run if the runner at third is fast enough, even if there are 2 outs the runner stealing second just has to avoid being tagged before the run scores because it's not a force out. (You see them slow or stop once the throw is made instead of sliding full speed and risking the tag early)

2:00 it counts as a pitch because he was already in the process of delivering a pitch, with a foot on thebrubber and his windup started. To stop that process and try to quick toss it home would be a balk, which awards all runners the next base anyway. The runner can take off at any time, though, so its definitely possible for the pitcher to be off the rubber and throw home, in which case it wouldnt count as a pitch. For why the throw was off target...he just was in an uncomfortable and pretty uncommon situation and choked.

And yes its a pitch. As long as the pitchers foot is on the rubber (the mound) and throws it toward home its a pitch. If he takes his foot off the mound then they can throw to any base. Watch pick off attempts. The pitcher has to take hits foot off before throwing to first. @@DNReacts
@adamplace1414
@adamplace1414 9 ай бұрын
Okay, I'm sure someone's commented this before me, but the "is it a pitch?" question is a complex one. My understanding is this (feel free to correct any errors): The pitcher can 'disengage' (take his back foot off the rubber on the pitcher's mound, and place it behind the rubber) and then throw home, and that doesn't count as a pitch, but that takes a little bit of extra time to make that move. Or they can deliver their normal pitch, but because there's a runner on base they have to do so with their normal 'stretch' delivery - if not, they could get called for a 'balk' which would score the runner automatically anyway. The point is that the pitcher can't BOTH rush the throw home AND be on the rubber. Furthermore, since the catcher usually notices the runner on 3rd taking off before the pitcher does, he might try to move up in front of the plate to receive the ball faster - however if he does this and the pitcher doesn't disengage, that's also a balk. Meaning, if the pitcher delivers a normal pitch on an attempt to steal home, the catcher has to stay in his area to receive the pitch. Hope that helped!

Jackie Robinson was the first MLB player to steal home. Ned Cuthbert playing for the Philadelphia Keystones during The Civil War was the first person to steal home, before stolen base was a term. What you are talking about is called a safety squeeze. Where you are playing aggressive on 3rd waiting for the bunt to run, they are just missing the bunt attempt.

6:40 the bunt is a sacrifice squeeze where the runner is going with the pitch and the batter is supposed to put the ball down and sacrifice himself for the run. But you’re seeing when the batter whiffed on the bunt so the runner was already going. The best thing you can do in baseball is make the other team make a play. The more you make guys throw a ball around and tag you, the better chance somebody will mess up.

What happened with Carlos zambrano (the cubs game where the pitcher threw the ball waaay to the right) is called a "pitch-out." it is often called while the catcher is relaying signs, and it is when the catcher gets out of their crouch and steps to the opposite batter's box of the current hitter. It is done either when they think a runner is going to attempt a steal or if the runner looks like they aren't paying attention, OR if during the windup a runner takes off and they'll call it on the fly. The spontaneous pitch-out is what happened in the clip and it flustered the pitcher.

I think any throw from the pitcher, starting in a standard position on the mound, to the catcher, is considered a pitch, and therefore either a ball or a strike. As long as they don't balk in the process? But even though I've been watching baseball since before I could walk, I'm not all the way, 100% sure of this. That's one of the wonderful things about baseball hahaha

If you're a player with speed (or superlative anticipation) at your level, the mantra is always make the other guy make the play. If he does, you shake his hand and walk away. But even in the majors, the intensity of needing to make such a precise play, reacting and performing in often less than two seconds, sometimes one, is just as likely to evoke a fail in those two seconds in MLB as it is in high school ball, especially since it's so uncommon to other bang-bang plays that are practiced. The closest thing to it is a drag bunt down the first base line, or a pop bunt down the third base line, with a really fast runner challenging the throw to first. The "squeeze play", where the runner on third takes off after he sees the bunt successfully laid down, and the "suicide squeeze [lay" where the runner takes off and commits as the pitcher is beginning his delivery and is committed to the pitch, with less than two outs is as old as baseball to guarantee scoring the run. With two outs the runner has to be safe or the run doesn't count.

You will notice that when the pitcher has an elaborate and/or slow wind up they are ripe for a steal of any base. Similarly, as a baserunner you should also notice whether the catcher is lobbing the ball back or throwing it back crisply--if lobbing you can steal home since the ball has to travel (slowly) to the pitcher, he has to catch it and quickly and accurately return the throw to the catcher who himself has to get into proper position to make the tag. We were taught as kids that your catcher should throw the ball back hard and from behind the plate to avoid the foregoing problems

"... is it the optimal decision to try and steal home?" Think of it this way: if the situation is such that they would be crazy to try and steal home, then it's actually the best time to do it because the pitcher is not expecting it.

Yeah, I think they asked that after a clip of Omar Vizquel stealing home, with the bases loaded and two outs in the second. It'd be pretty bad to make an out there, but Omar was wearing a Giants uniform which means he was toward the end of a 20+ year Hall of Fame-caliber career, and had a right-handed batting helmet on (he switch-hit) which means there was probably a lefty pitching. I think only someone as well-regarded as he was at that point in his career could get away with pulling something like that. I assume he saw something in the pitcher or catcher that gave him the idea.

It has probably already been mentioned. This season the Reds had a special rookie, Elly De La Cruz, he stole 2nd, 3rd and home in the course of two pitches. That was one of the craziest things that I have seen in my 50 years of watching baseball. They say that it was two pitches, but honestly I think that it would be three pitches total if you count the pitch that he swipes second base on and the one in between his swipe of third & home.

Prior to this year stealing home plate was rare. The comment about bunting seeming to be part of stealing home is somewhat true. You will recall the term "Suicide Squeeze" mentioned during this video. A Suicide Squeeze is a play where the runner at 3rd and the batter are in a plan. The plan is that batter is "going to bunt" regardless. Normally a runner at 3rd with less than 2 outs is frozen gor fear that the bunt will be too hard and the pitcher will get it and throw to home and get the runner. But if the runner leaves 3rd much much earlier because he knows that the batter is bunting then there will not he be enough time to field the bunt and throw to home.....as the runner squeezes into home for a scor. However, if the batter misses the bunt, the catcher now has the ball and simply tags the runner. So.....its called a "Suicide Squeeze" play because it is suicide if not executed properly.

bunting when a runner's on 3rd (and less than 2 outs) is called a "suicide squeeze", basically it's a very high-percentage run scoring play. You start the runner, the batter bunts (which is highly likely to be put into play), and because the runner started it's nearly impossible to get them out, so you throw to first instead for the sure out and concede the run. In this video they're doing this and it's causing panic and chaos resulting in the catcher often dropping the ball, etc. This, incidentally, is often why stealing home works in general. Everyone is so caught off guard that they muff the throw, the tag, or both.

Damo asked right at the end if there was something missing from your repertoire, and, after watching this video and hearing your question about the number of bunts in the video, I think you guys should look into a squeeze bunt compilation. A squeeze bunt is, essentially, bunting with a runner on third and less than two outs to try to bring the runner in. It's not very common any more because most managers reason that having the hitter swing away is pretty likely to drive in the run anyway, either with a hit or a sac fly, and squeeze bunts were a lot more common before the universal DH when pitchers would occasionally find themselves having to bat in a run-producing situation. There are two forms of squeeze bunt; the suicide squeeze is when the runner on third breaks for the plate on the pitch, and the safety squeeze is when the runner gets a big secondary lead but doesn't break for the plate until he's sure that the hitter has gotten the bunt down. There's an obvious upside and downside to both methods. The suicide squeeze is impossible to stop if executed correctly, but you run the risk of a bad bunt attempt running you into an out. The safety squeeze is less likely to fail due to a bad bunt attempt, but the downside is that a good bunt with an unlucky bounce can still result in an out at the plate since the catcher has a little extra time to gather the ball. Many of the bunt attempts in this compilation were actually failed suicide squeezes, but double failures since, while the batter failed to get the bunt down, the catcher also failed to catch the ball and tag the runner in time; the resulting play ends up going in the books as a stolen base.

You don't see many attempts at stealing home because its very risky especially considering you already have a player on 3rd base and any hit or even a wild pitch is pretty much guaranteed to score the run. Its fun to see though. Especially when left handed pitchers, who have their backs to the runner on 3rd base, lose concentration and an alert base runner takes advantage. Going back to youth baseball, runners on 1st and 3rd is an invitation. For the runner on first, second base is there for the taking... with less than two outs... it's a lot more risky when the defense only needs to get one out. But oftentimes, the runner on first is just trying to provoke a throw, and the runner on third is supposed to be watching, and take off for home plate as soon as a throw is made. In Little League (youth baseball, the player will skip or take their time going to second to try to bait the throw. Our coaches used to have the catcher spring out of his stance and make like he was throwing to second, but actually throw back to the pitcher to see if we could catch the runner on third trying to cheat his way home. Yankees manager Billy Martin would send the runner on first and have them trip to try to draw a throw.

You'll notice most of these pitchers are left-handed because a right-hander is facing third base but a lefty faces first base. Also at 7:58, you'll often see the catcher pause before throwing the ball back to the pitcher. What they're doing is waiting for the runner to go back to third. This is what happens if you don't! Also this is something usually only attempted with two outs. With fewer outs you can easily score on a sacrifice bunt (although many of these are attempted sacrifice bunts where the hitter just couldn't get it done) or a deep fly ball after tagging up. With two outs, the odds that the current batter just makes an out are pretty high. Also catchers did used to physically block the plate but after a particularly horrifying and infamous injury, it's now not allowed unless you have the ball already.

When you see the batter lunging at the ball when trying to bunt, its cause it was a "suicide squeeze" meaning the batters job is to get the bat on the ball one way or another cause the runner is coming from 3rd base.

The bad throws are due to the pitcher being caught off gaurd and freaking out to get it home in time. Usually the other team is clocking and seeing if the pitcher/catcher is not paying attention between pitches. If its a trend they will take advantage.

the runner stealing home while the batter attempts to bunt, is a planned play called a suicide squeeze. the idea is to put a bunt in play and the runner can score from 3rd easily if executed properly. however if the batter whiffs, or pops ball up runner is dead to rights .

Left handed pitchers face 1st base, so their back is turned to 3rd. Its easier for the runner on 3rd to get an early jump without the pitcher seeing him. If you'll notice, the left handed pitchers usually only know he's stealing 3rd because of the catcher's movements.

Most questions have been answered (Zambrano didn't disengage, so that was a pitch even though you thought it looked like just a throw, yes that was Jackie, suicide squeezes explained, success rate of the steal of home). One thing to note is that a couple of steals were on walks, where the pitcher/defense just assumed there was an automatic time called since a walk is getting a free base. However a walk is a live ball play so this can happen, or a batter could take second base on the walk if the pitch was wild, etc. Bases loaded 2 outs has a run expectancy of 0.767, so making a third out would wipe that much off of the board. A successful steal gives you 1 run and 0.440 RE for the 1st & 2nd two outs resulting situation. So a runner would need to steal home with over a 67% rate to make the play worth it. I'm not sure if the 27% rate below includes missed suicide squeeze automatic outs, but it's still clear that stealing home is a very risky play.

wouldn't it only need to be 50%? 0.767 vs 1.44 or 0.

One desperate strategy for the pitcher would be to try to intentionally hit the batter when you see the runner coming for home. If you hit the batter, the batter still gets a free first base but its then a dead ball and the runner will have to return to third no matter what. its happened before. Theres two entities called a suicide squeeze and a safety squeeze, both involving bunting to try to score a runner from third. In a safety squeeze, the runner does not run until after the ball in put into play, just in case the batter misses the bunt. In a suicide squeeze, the runner starts running once the pitcher starts his movement, called as such because the runner is probably a sitting duck and going to run into an out at home.

In the 1946 World Series game 7, 8th inning, the score was tied between the hometown St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox. As St. Louis was batting, Enos 'Country' Slaughter led off with a single. After two following batters failed to get on base, Slaughter remained on first. The next batter, Harry Walker lined a hit to left-center field as Slaughter took off with a hit-and-run. Slaughter kept running around third base despite being given a stop sign by the Cards' third base coach. The throw from the center fielder was cut off by Red Sox shortstop, Johnny Pesky. As Pesky turned to the infield, he checked Walker at first base and ignored Slaughter's mad dash to home. Slaughter slid home without being touched and scored the winning run to clinch the World Series victory for the St. Louis Cardinals. His "Mad Dash" is memorialized in St. Louis baseball history with a statue of his slide into home that stands near Busch Stadium.

A lot of steals of home are because the runner notices a pattern in the pitcher or catcher’s routine, or a defect in the routine is better said. Such as perhaps the pitcher is not paying attention and turning his back, or the catcher snaps the throw back quickly and automatically, leaving an opening.

Stealing home is only on the table in a few very specific situations. With bases loaded, if you have a very fast runner on third, it might be considered because oftentimes the pitcher returns to their full windup w/ bases loaded because it's a force out at every base so the only steal option is home. The other big one i can think of is when the runner (or the entire team sometimes) noticed a tell or a tip-off in the pitcher's delivery that gives them a huge advantage. A common situation is a pitcher is tipping when they throw breaking pitches, so a runner might attempt to steal home if the pitcher isn't holding them close to the bag and the runner knows a slow breaking pitch is coming.

suicide squeeze is when you make the batter put down the bunt and send the runner as the pitcher is throwing, you trust your batter makes contact... if he misses then hes leaving the runner out to dry. thats why its called a suicide squeeze. the batter is in charge of the runners fate, guy on 3rd has to hope the batter at least makes contact, even if its a foul

If the pitcher's foot is on the rubber and he throws it to home, its a pitch. If he wanted to try to get the runner out at home without it counting as a pitch, hed have to step off first, but there's no real reason to do that unless you really care about not throwing a ball (but id say potentially saving a run is more important than saving a ball, obviously)

In high school we utilized the double steal all the time. If you have an aggressive catcher that's likely to attempt the out at 2nd it's the smartest play. And the guy at third can't hesitate when the catcher is fully committed to the throw to second. That's what happened in that clip of the infield trying the rundown between 1 and 2 and getting nobody.

At 9:15 you stopped to talk about Omar vizquel stealing home as a Giant, bright orange jerseys. You were wondering why they would try to steal home with 2 outs and the bases loaded. Which is a great question about the game! There is a game within the game happening, it makes baseball so interesting!! Of course its dangerous to try to steal in that situation. And it was a 2-1 count which is a hitters count. The pitcher doesn't want to go down 3-1which is going to plate a run about 60% of the time. It's the second inning so the pitcher needs to get out of this inning clean or he is gonna have a disastrous day. This has to be a great pitch. Omar knows all this. And if it's a good hitter the pitcher is worries about that. If it's a poor hitter the pitcher is locked in get THIS guy. This has to be a great pitch. And it's lefty vs righty! Omar knows this a is lefty pitcher. He has watched him go thru his set and motion a couple times from third base. Omar probably knew that this kid had a slow set from the stretch from scouting report he read weeks ago! And of course it's crazy to steal in this situation. But this is Omar Vizquel. Who? You mean I didn't... Uh, oh yeah Omar is a hall of gamer and one of the greatest, smartest, all-around shortstops of all time. He knew exactly what was happening on the diamond because he understood the game at a rare level. And that's what a lot of these stealing home plays are about. Understanding the situation better than the opponent. Winning the games inside of the game. You two certainly have come along way in your understanding and it shows! Great videos as always! A BIG fan!! Of course its crazy to steal home bases loaded
