Used a door spring from home depot to create tension on my sun shade; makes it snug without the need for constant adjustment. It also provides wind resistance; it glides with the wind and prevents damage.

I used 6x6 with a post cap, they look better to me. I also hang flower baskets from the post. I mounted mine under the soffit and gutter onto the house. Also I varied the height at the corners to give the sail a twist so the rain runs off and doesnt pool in the center.
@littleaboutalot7478
@littleaboutalot7478 4 жыл бұрын
Good Input. I was looking for some additional height so I went through the gutters. I also have an overhang over the garage door that would have been almost impossible to connect to the house. Thanks for sharing. Varied height is very important as I have learned. When ordering the waterproof sails they will definitely collect water in the middle if you don't have a way for it to exit.

@@hmanone1063 , for those looking to "find" the rafter ends. If your home had a gutter system that has long nails to attach the gutters to your home, you already know where the rafter ends are located. You just remove those nails and install the eye screws to hold the sail and the gutter. SAFETY NOTE: Never stand on the top step of any ladder. Overhead work, efforts to drill, or many other physical efforts can cause a fall. The little girl helper doesn't want her Daddy breaking an arm or something even worse. BE SAFE.

Great video. I tried your method today actually for the gutter pass through. I could only find 8” eye screws though. I got all the threads into the wood, but curious if you had any issues so far. It’s a ⅜” screw. Seems sturdy but once the wind picks up...

I posted another video with a review last week. Check that out! I have has some issues but a bad storm brought it down. I used the 8" eye bolts. They are strong if you find the rafter behind them. Had it through some pretty high winds but the sails that I got I could never get them super tight. Sagged in the middle.

Little About A lot I just watched it. I “think” I got into the rafters. But if so not by much. I’m debating tossing up 2 more posts closer to the house faster seeing your vid. @@veddar79 you shouldn't have the water issue that I had and I think you can stretch those permeable ones better than what I had. It was a strong storm and did other damage to other things I've never had a problem with.

Made a world of difference. Yes, absolutely it helped. It also depends on the size of your sails but with these it was bending the 4x6 and then it would snap it back causing even more stress. Definitely recommend extra support wherever you can put it.

Overall, It's great. Some maintenance is required. When it rains the shade sails aren't 100% tight all the way across so if they aren't pulled real tight you get water pooling in the middle. I keep mine with 3 corners high and 1 corner low so the water has a place to go. I have added supports if you check out the part2 patio extension project you can see it there. The larger the shades the more issues you will have with wind and rain unless maybe you get the permeable ones. Thanks for watching.

From another video I came across the guy made a good point about all that tension over time bending the wood support beams even with nice beefy ones. It looked like you were fixing that with cross beams but you only did one side. If you continue to box that in the cross beams should keep them from sagging. Nice video. Might want to try and seal (silicon?) those eye screws through the gutter so water doesn't make it's way into the facia over time.

Have you had any rain yet? Those are going to fill with water and something is gonna have to give. I installed those at a 45 degree between two buildings. 45 degree angle because I figured that would keep them from holding water. NOPE. They held so much water that the 3/8" eye bolts bent then broke off. Those are not designed to be installed that way. You are supposed to install then with two diagonal ends up and the other two down. This allows for the fabric to be pulled tight and for water to run off. EDIT: Just saw your storm video.

Got our 12 x 12, waterproof, great quality at discount store. ALDI. LIDL had similar ones. ABOUT $ 16.00. We live 2 blocks from ocean and 2 blocks from ICW, SSOOO...its plenty windy. Put them up early last summer, attached to our DECK. STILL FLYING TODAY!!! We did take them down for winter, and of course hurricanes and tropical storms. Also if we are expecting high winds, 40 +, we drop one side down and secure to deck rail, wrapped in a bungee cord. We needed shade on front of house, we were baking inside. It certainly made our den more comfortable, and really cut AC bill because the thermostat-register is located in the den. The other rooms were too cool, while the den was too hot...and the AC ran all day!! This was a GREAT FIX!! When this shade gets old, we will DEFINITELY buy a new one. Actually, after we installed the shade and realized how strong and effective it was, i went back and bought another one!! So I'm set for, hopefully, a couple years. I found my posts on Offer up, they were only $5 each. Theses shades came with the ropes and most of the hardware we needed to attach the shade. I did have to buy hardware to attach posts to the deck. I'm a ? reasonably healthy, 59 yo woman, hubby travels most of the time, so i DID THIS MYSELF. I'm not much with DIY's requiring great skill with power tools, but if I can do it...you can!!

The wind is a problem above 20 mph. Depending on how you attach them they have a lot of tension on them. These are 16x16ft sails and they probably could sail a boat. lol. We take them down in high winds and big rain storms. It is less of a problem if you have them at different anchor heights which is recommended by the manufacture.

Awesome Video! This was exactly what I needed for my project around our pool. I am stuck between treated post or galvanized post. Did you think about using galvanized at all?

I did think about using galvanized but they are a bit more expensive and I like the look of stained wood.

@@littleaboutalot7478 I completely agree. I like the look of the stained wood much better also. Thanks for the input!

I have redone the shade sails and made another video. I used the permeable shade sails and they work great. I haven’t had to mess with them since I put them up. Check out my newer video with the new sails. Thanks for watching.
