Rudyard Kipling is one of my favorite authors and the "The Man Who Would Be King" is one of his best stories. The days of the British Raj were a fascinating time in history, made to order for tales of high adventure. The movie starring Michael Caine and Sean Connery was great. Thanks for making this download available. 😀😀😀😀👍👍👍

A very fine and expressive read by Philippa. I'm not English, by the way and I find her easily understandable and wonderfully appropriate for Rudyard Kipling. And if you can't enjoy both male and female readers, I just don't know how to help you!

This is one of my favourite stories and Movies!! The ending of both always brings me to tears, I'm an Infantry veteran and a Freemason and to me the message of this story is that while we are gods among men as a highly trained special forces element, when we leave the military we are nothing but undesirables no matter what we have sacrificed!! In the end we veterans die poor on the streets going insane from the horror's we have endured!! That's why this story affects me in such a way!!

1) It's good to see that most of the comments are from people who appreciate the effort put into this and by extension, the librivox project aims (a way of making general culture accessible to more people). Sure, I didn't like the cockney accent or the reading style, but she gave up her time to do this when she didn't have to. Are you willing to do so? Why, not submit a better version? 2) A secondary point that I find interesting, is that nowadays, some people expect things to be of high quality and yet completely free....but that's a very different discussion.....

Many thanks for posting this wonderful Rudyard Kipling story. I saw the film at age 6 or 7 in 1975 with my Dad and twin brother in a wonderful classically old theater with a beautiful ceiling and a balcony. It's a wonderful story that was well done on film. The chemistry between Sean Connery as "Daniel Dravot" and Michael Caine as "Peachy Carnehan" is excellent with an unforgettable ending. To hear the full story and compare it to the film is helpful. Likewise, I read Kipling's "Captains Courageous" and saw the several filmed renditions. The classic 1937 version with Spencer Tracy, Freddie Bartholomew, Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglas, Mickey Rooney, and John Carradine is my favorite version. And Disney certainly made its money off "The Jungle Book." And lastly, who can forget the poem "Gunga Din" and the 1939 film with Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

@@unknownkingdom well of course there is! However you have to adjust for the times it was written in. If you were to scrap every book containing those faults, you would have to chuck out almost all books written in the 18th,19th, and 20th century. If you’re not able to do that, then I suggest you read a very carefully selected series of books!

@@jennifermcdonald5432 why would you choose to read/listen to this book outside of an academic setting (for example studying colonialist attitudes in literature)? I thought “This is a story without women. How can a woman read this effectively?” and went looking for a male reader. He was completely disappointing. I came back to this reader, Phillipa, and was immediately drawn in by her reading, her pacing, the clarity. I was suitably chastened and will look for other works read by her. I now really recommend it to you.
