That song alone is the reason why Metallica is the No. 1 of the Big Four. No other of the four bands has ever done anything like that. Not even Mustaine. That song has so much influences and sections, I don't think I've ever heard a metal band do that before. Maybe after. But not before. Not even Maiden. There's typical metal heaviness in there, there's classical structure, bluesy solos, Spanish/Mexican harmonies, an accoustic intro/outro which sounds Greek to me... It's an incredible piece of music and it will stand out forever like some classical stuff does.

First listened to this song when I was 9 in 1990 out of a tape I found with no marks/info. So I didn't know it was a song from a band called Metallica. I could only wonder "why is this music making me feel such an inexplicable mournfulness, where does all this sorrow come from....?" and fell in love, could not stop listening to it. During the next three years I got to know Metallica by Ride the Lightning and the Black album. It became my favorite band immediately. I got ...and justice finally like in '96, didn't have metalhead friends who could've shared it with me earlier and to make matters worse I lived in a rural area far from music stores... music was a scarce good for me and I was addicted. So imagine how blown away I was when I played that album for the 1st time and THAT penultimate track came up. My fav song was from my favorite band. And I had no idea for like 6 years. Bless these guys.

@@tanneredge9774 I know Testament since their demo, when they still called the band Legacy. They do have some good instrumentals. Especially "Musical Death (A Dirge)". It has a beautiful clean part. But it doesn't come near "To live...".

You can train your ear. Once you find the root note you can normally work out chord progessions etc. But I'm nowhere near this guys level

No one does intros or outros like Metallica. The outro of this song, leads into a pretty hardcore intro of the the last song of the album. When you play the piano at the end of your video, it brings the melody even more to life, and tugs hard on my heart strings.

@@stankopesa226 HUGE LOSS!!! In the few albums he participated in, he set a foundation that would become legendary. BUT, you cannot discount what James and Kirk added!! Lars also had a great vision, and Newsted brought the fan energy to the band! Such an amazing group of guys. Rob is an amazing cohesive fit to an already epic band! Love these guys!

It's hard to imagine cliff playing with metallica after 86 watching with Jason but I wonder how different they would sound and look had he not pass away. Like blackened was something jason had helped create while one and to live is to die were both songs that had been thought of while cliff was around cause one was a song james talked about with his brother when he was younger after watching the film Johnny had his gun. So those songs would definitely be on there but I'm not sure about anything else.

For whatever reason, perhaps that I grew up with Metallica, or that somehow my muse was already an anthem, the band never seemed particularly happy or angry - more like a wheel inside a ball than man against the wall.❤😊

I love Cliff Burton. On my Mt. Rushmore of bass players but he only got to play his song for 5 years. Rob is now the longest running bass player even if you combine Saint Burton, Newsted and McGovney years together.

Love how bluesy that first guitar solo is, I wish these guys had kept up releasing an instrumental track on every album. They are some of my favorite Metallica songs and they really show off how melodic they could be. Especially when Cliff was a part of the band, those instrumentals really shined

…but then The Black Album (1991) was almost bass-driven which kind of makes it up for ‘Justice’. I feel the absence of bass on ‘Justice’ was almost a tribute to Cliff as a way to show him they loved him and the emptiness he left behind. And then, Bob Rock comes in and bass is all over the Black Album. In other words, ‘Justice’ was their coping record and the ‘Black Album’ made them find themselves again. And the rest is history.

I learned this song on guitar when i was 15 (now 46), i still play that acoustic chord cycle when ever i pick up a guitar, its like a warm up. Hearing you riffing those chords on the piano, with all the extra top notes was wonderful.

I love both Chopin and Metallica. Metallica was my introduction to metal and Chopin is my favorite classical composer, along with Bach. Bach, btw was a huge influence on Cliff Burton. The intro to Damage, Inc. was based on a Bach composition called “Come, Sweet Death”. I’ve listened to that Bach piece, but couldn’t tell any similarities. But, I’m not classically trained and my ear isn’t that well tuned for analyzing music.

The weird thing about the presumed lack of bass on this album is that I used to listen to it all the time on my Walkman back when they were a thing, and if I turned the bass boost on it made the album unlistenable because the bass would boom so much. I'm pretty sure the bass is there, it just follows the rhythm guitar exactly note for note so they both bleed into one.

It definitely isn't. Lars' mixing instruction was to turn the bass down to where you can barely hear it, then another 6-8 db. If you listen to the isolated bass track of Dyers Eve there's a part Jason plays under the chords by James and Kirk that sort of goes along with Lars' bass drum. It can't be heard at all on the album.

It's the guitar tracks that are just so bass heavy. Multi-layered guitar tracks with a lot of high and low end, and the mids basically fully cut out

@@andjustjizzforallThe retroactive bitching about the lack of bass is so tiring.... This album was considered heavy ASF when it came out and nobody noticed or cared about the bass thing... At that time bass was often hard to discern on metal albums anyway, and Metallica themselves were making the bass less audible with each album.

The bass is actually slightly audible in the remastered version, also the bass drum and guitars low end is tamed so the overall mix is much more listenable. Highly recommend to listen to that

One of my fav ever metallica instrumentals which pays tribute to former bass player cliff burton who died in bus accident in Scandinavia when band was on tour. That melodic middle section gives me goose bumps after all these years as the pain of that loss is felt uncontrollably at this part. R.IP. Cliff burton.

Have to start by saying great pick. This is one of my faves and was responsible for helping me learn guitar coming from a piano background. I only had an acoustic when ...Justice came out so i plugged awayand learned like every Metallica part ever doe with clean guitar, while learning the chunky as well, but struggling on an acoustic. Eventually get an electric. Path was set. I sooo loved the piano renditions at the end. Beautiful. Might have inspired me to go play some keys after 40 years!

This song makes me tear up..reminds me of watching my late brother and a friend of ours both on guitar playing this..he loved metallica and this song. He could listen to a song with no tabs or anything and play ot back exactly how it was played.He was only 37...today he would have been 46. Left behind 1 son who plays exactly like him and by ear. The slow part in the middle was a piece already written by cliff, the rhythm guitar part converted from bass. This song is more depressing than angry.

You can see that he's not only listening to the song, but already following the structure and the combination of the different sections. When he plays the piano in the end it's like the melodies are just flowing out of his hands. Wonderful. Speaking of wonders, there's a short melody he plays which Metallica didn't play and which to me sounds like something from Marillion. I wonder if he heard that band somewhere and unconciously weaved it into the Metallica melody.

Love what y'all are doing! Just to be clear though, Garage Days Re-Revisited (The $5.98 EP) was the 1st studio release with Jason Newsted. It was all cover tunes though. BTW, what is y'all's back story? I just found the few videos you've posted in the last couple of weeks, but not story of what/how y'all decided to do this. But again, FANTASTIC!

Thanks for the info! We met a little over four years ago and bonded over our love of music and the two completely different tastes in music that we have. We’ve been great friends since. About a month ago, we were on the phone with each other and got into a conversation about the music in HBO’s Succession. Judson started breaking it down in a way that completely blew my mind. I thought how cool it would be to get a conversation like that on camera and I asked him if he would be interesting in making some reaction videos. It took some persistence from me, but I finally got him convinced to do it. We’ve had a blast doing it, so far and the positive feedback from everyone has been a very welcomed surprise. 🤘

@@Greatmeasures I think you are about to find out there is a lot more taste for this kind of thing than most people would ever think.( the metal/classical crossover between the 2 different styles) Some classical people I know do like metal also and the same the other way around as well but for the most part each group isn’t very familiar with a lot of the music from the other side even though there is tons of music that they would love if they look up the right composer/ or bands etc. 🤔I would also be interested in this going the other way as well the odd time , You listening to some of Judson’s favourite classical music as well

He was just listening the whole time, not saying too much, then unexpectedly played some parts on piano. Really cool! A lot of times I watch so called classically trained musicians react and talk a lot but show nothing. I wasn’t sure about this guy…but at the end, putting it down on piano…if this really is his first time hearing this? You are very perceptive of music. I’m from a Musical family, and have been playing guitar and drums for years, and the one thing about learning something new I learned from my uncle (RIP) is shut the fuck up and really listen.

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve had the same experience with other videos. He has a way of taking the whole thing in and then playing certain parts within a matter of seconds. It amazes me and makes me jealous at the same time.

He taught you a very important lesson no doubt about it 😊 Your uncle was 100% right as S’ingTFU allows one to hear all the instruments at the same exact time together and also be able to separate them all in your mind individually as you listen to it. It is absolutely essential to learning any music by ear. Once I learned how to do this when learning saxophone 🎷 a few years earlier my guitar playing and figuring things out by ear improved quite a bit over just a few months.

Of all the "pop" genres of the last 60 years, metal is the one genre nearest to classical. I love Judson's analysis of it. This channel came up after watching REN's Hi, Ren for like the hundredth time, and rather than watch the reaction I came straight to the channel. Dunno exactly what drew me over, but when I read the brief, single sentence synapsis of the channel, I switched straight over to the video tab and sorted by oldest first. I guess I'm taking the journey with ya. Down the rabbit hole we go into my favorite genre of them all. (But like Judson, I played a few instruments including piano, so I listen to everything from Patsy Cline to Lamb of God to Glenn Miller to 90s hip-hip to Hank Williams, and my daughter plays 9 instruments, as well.) I love his technical analysis, and can see him, in his facial expression, he's mapping it out on the keys. I bet he VISUALIZES the music as if it were like mathematical. He's fully immersed in it. I'm sort of envious, too, that this is the first time hearing this song. I wish I could hear some old Metallica for the first time.

I got to see the And Justice tour and fortunately got to hear rhis album with bass. I worshipped Cliff in the 80s tbh and he was the 2nd tattoo i got after Jimi Hendrix, but Jason was oretty cool in the bamd live. His vocals at times were better than James for some songs live i thought. Thanks for the reaction!
