I feel like "This Dying Soul" is such an underrated Dream Theater song. It's got everything, and travels so many different modes for them but is firmly in their dark and heavy mode. I would love to see the reaction to that one. I also feel like you guys would get a real kick out of Haken, basically this generation's Dream Theater. Tracks like "1985", "Puzzle Box" or "Atlas Stone" would be fantastic starting points.

So the ending of this is in reference to how The Beatle’s She’s So Heavey ended. Slowly adding more static until it just abruptly stops. Metropolis Part 1 would be a good one to cover. @smftv
@smftv 2 ай бұрын
Mike Portnoy, took over for (child prodigy drummer who trained with Gene Krupa) A.J, Pero of Twisted Sister when he tragically passed away from a massive heart attack in his sleep. I've had the honor of meeting A.J. and hanging out with him back stage a couple of times. He was always joking, smiling, laughing and so kind to his fans. He gave me his drumsticks on stage, signed them afterwards... RIP AJ. Ironically, he and Portnoy were good friends and even played together in "Adrenaline mob". Portnoy toured with TS for years while also playing outside of TS. To A.J's credit, he dumbed down his playing style in order for Twisted Sister to find success. Which, understandably frustrated him. Dee Snider once said to A.J. "How many drummers created a beat instantly recognized all over the world?!" (Referencing "We're Not Gonna Take It"). Additionally (and this is a direct quote from an article:) Dee Snider talking about Mike Portnoy replacing A.J. "A.J. was friends with Mike, and Mike was a fan of A.J.'s, and they were both in Adrenaline Mob. So, Mike was A.J.s's fill-in guy. So it's not a matter of life and death - we're not talking about dying, we were just talking about, 'Hey, if I can't make it... Say, if my child is in the hospital and I need to be home, I will have a replacement.' And six months later, A.J. dies (on March 20, 2015). And it was almost like he had said who he wanted to replace him. So, we went to Mike, and Mike came in. An incredible drummer. And what was really incredible, the classiest thing - people need to know this - he studied A.J.'s live tapes, and he copied them, beat for beat, hit for hit, cymbal crash for cymbal crash. He stepped in, and it was like... He changed nothing. He put no Mike Portnoy in there, he did A.J.'s live parts. And when we asked him if he wanted to do a solo, he said, 'I will not do a solo.' And what we did is that we lowered a video screen, and we had the second-to-last show that A.J. played filmed, and we played that solo. Mike would not do the drum solo, and we let A.J. do a drum solo every night. People in the audience would cry. So, this is a classy person, a talented person, a respectful person who respects other musicians and their art as well - so, he's not just about showing off and being Mike Portnoy. I love that guy." So many amazing Dream Theater songs, but I have to request "Metropolis Part 1". It's a long one at 9:30, but it doesn't feel like it. It dates all the way back to 1989, and ended up on the same album as Pull Me Under.

Been programming since I was 12 almost 35 years and I can confirm a lot of us love music like Dream Theater. A band I REALLY like to just put on a play list of is out of Japan called Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Not sure for everyone but for me the mastered complexity acts kind of like mental lubrication to get the gears going. I keep things like magnetic balls, Rubik's cubes, or fold up modular origami, etc. on my desk just to fidget with while I'm thinking through an algorithm or planning a system design.

Mike Portnoy's been in 3 supergroups: Transatlantic, Adrenaline Mob, Sons of Apollo I really enjoy watching your reviews and your interactions. Fates Warning is another pioneering Prog metal band if you'd like to listen and review. You could try "The Eleventh Hour".

I love that great measures logo rendered like every black metal band ever, so convoluted you can barely read it XD XD

Would be interesting to see what Judson thinks of Ephel Duath, particularly something off of "Painter's Palette" as it was their finest hour, or "Pain Necessary to Know." I could see Judson hating it, but could also see him finding it interesting. It's very unique sounding stuff and the guy behind it, Davide Tiso, is very creative and makes quite personal sounding music I think.
