Residents and tourists have been told to prepare for extreme weather conditions as parts of the Mediterranean experience a severe heatwave.
Greece and neighbouring countries are expecting to experience record temperatures.
It comes as the body of an American tourist has reportedly been found on the Greek island of Mathraki, adding to the list of foreigners missing or reported to have died during the record-setting heatwave.
A Dutchman also was found dead on Samos over the weekend, following the recent death of British TV presenter Dr Michael Mosley on the island of Symi.
Adding to the list, two hikers were found dead on 5 June on Crete. Another American, Albert Calibet, is among at least three others reported missing.

Climate change is the reason that an act of arson caused wild fires got out of hand the way it did. Climate change of course can't be the sole cause of a fire- something has to trigger it. Climate change makes extreme weather events more likely which is undeniably what is happening.

Greek here living my whole life in Athens and traveling around all the country. Not a single day was a record breaker this summer so far. The only concerning fact was that the heat came too early even for Greek standards. For years we had rain and 25-27°C at its best at this time of year... On the other hand Iberian peninsula is remarkably cold. People from areas that are not affected by these temperatures must be better prepared and shouldn't overestimate themselves. I lived in Greece for many years. What is happening now isn’t unusual. Ignore the hype. What IS necessary is the clearing of ground around houses to avoid wild fires destroying your home, but most sensible citizens do that anyway and the Greek government have just imposed new regulations requiring that to be done and to be registered. Most wild fires are started deliberately anyway as a method of ground clearing for more building. Profit.

Thousands die each year from extreme heat. The elderly and very young are most at risk. Heatstroke is extremely dangerous. When I travelled to Rome in June 2003 there was a heatwave across Europe resulting in temperatures usually not seen until August. As a fair skinned Scot I was completely unprepared for 40 degree heat. I had gone exploring, took a wrong turn and ran out of water. I began shivering which is often the first symptom of heatstroke. Fortunately I reached a busy park with a van selling water just in time. I sat under a tree and lost consciousness for a while. I was lucky, could so easily have had a different outcome. I was 32 at the time.

You could start your argument by attempting to dismiss the vast amounts of independently verified ice-core data, but how you would go about this I have no idea, because in reality the evidence is extremely strong. There's no scientific controversy in climate science.

Greece is just a desert landscape with some beach, but in Australia and many Pacific Island have way better beach. Greek is just known to eat food all day long and lazy people with no economical benefit. It is no good at sports either but of course they are lazy ppl. A lot of idiotic comments here. I am greek and 40 years old and can say that we have never, ever experienced a summer like 23 before, not even close. Heatwaves are in the program but not like that hell. So yes, it is news! Other than that, heatstroke victims made the news when a semi-famous british dietologist died, but they are nothing new. Greeks know how to function in the summer, we hear that since we are toddlers, but northeners are often acting arrogant and idiotic, going hiking in remote places in the middle of the day, when physical activity should be limited strictly to beach activities. Or they eat heavy and early and forget to drink water. I see them all the time, for instance biking at 2 pm when the heat is at its worse, and dunno if I should laugh or cry. Respect the sun and the sea, they can both be lethal! When in Rome do as the effin Romans.

Inform yourselves before you go hiking midday on barren rocks. It's common freaking sense! Look around and do as the locals! If you bother to ask any greek/spanish/ italian etc they will tell you to avoid physical activity and the sun, drink a lot of water, fruit, vegetables AND SALT. Many morons don't listen and they don't bother to research, even though they see that the locals are either indoors or at the beach, strictly under shade in the hot hour, even though everyone knows about the famous siesta, even though everyone knows we eat well late at night, when the heat is over. I don't have to be an eskimo to know the cold can kill you and neither does someone have to be a southerner to know the sun is not a joke. The responsibility is all yours.
