Greek police sending migrants back across the border | VPRO Documentary

In this episode, Bram Vermeulen travels to the border of Greece with Turkey. There, a six-metre high wall is being built to stop migrants and refugees. Along the banks of the border river Evros, soldiers of the Greek army, police, and heat cameras are now active to keep a close watch on the border 24 hours a day. The Greeks have also formed a civil guard to act as the eyes and ears of the border police.
Although the wall is not yet finished, migrants or refugees are nowhere to be seen in the villages of the border region. Is this because of the tightened surveillance, COVID, or is something else going on?
Meanwhile, Greek residents complain about the emptying of the region. Young people have left for the big city or for other countries in Europe. Elderly farmers now drive tractors. An asparagus farmer is forced to turn to an employment agency in Athens, which sends migrants from West Africa to help him. They are the only Africans in the village.
When Bram Vermeulen and his film crew make their last round along the border on the last day in the area, they come across a large group of Afghan refugees. They tell shocking stories that answer all the unanswered questions. When the Greek police catch sight of the Afghans, the film crew is taken to the police station.

😕☝This whole Afghan crisis has been stage managed & allowed to happen to create a pretext for more immigration. Orwellian style "Order out of chaos". We don't want or need them. Simple! Re-housing them as well. Nice that the feudal Tories asked us before committing themselves to their pledge! There's plenty of our own who are homeless, living in fear & penniless! But there's no glory in them helping their own. This is just a political empty gesture to vitue signal to the rest of the world. Bringing these people over will only inflame tensions, create conflicts & risk public safety. Furthermore, the difference in cultures, customs & values is vast. They won't adapt to us, but we'll be expected to adapt to them. If we don't we get labelled as Racists! Finally, they hold nothing but contempt for our western culture & our democratic way of life.

It's common for the men to come over to Europe and settle, get their papers in order, and then invite their female and underaged family members along. I've seen it a lot in Germany. It was the common misconception also back in 2015 that only younger men were coming over, therefore, they couldn't actually be refugees but economic migrants or radicals. They are just trying to live, for the most part, though I don't doubt some bad apples could be mixed in there.

Why you blame Greece for not allowing illegal crossings from a country (Turkey) that is not in danger ? Why so many migrants want to travel and stay in Europe in countries like France, Germany, Austria and so on ? Did they ask the citizens of these countries if they want to accept this procedure ? These European countries have built strong economies and good quality of life with hard work. They deserve what they have in their countries. My country, Greece didn't do something like that and I'm not proud of this. But if I want to travel and work into Germany, for example, I have to travel legally, not by crossing all the countries on my road without permission.

Immigrants are piling up in Greece. Other European countries have stopped accepting or accept a very small percentage. Greece has helped a lot with the refugee situation, immeasurably more compared to all the EU countries. Turkey is using immigrants as a weapon to extract financing and other favours from the EU and EU is not taking measures against Turkey. Turkey is the problem and EU must act!

@@SYldz67 Syrians are well accepted in EU, as far as I know, in contrast to Afghans for some reason. I get you don't want them, but Turkey signed a deal with EU and receives money to keep them, which is a shitty deal that violates human rights. Also, didn't you contribute to the migration crisis in Syria, by invading the northern part of the country? And yes, Europe must take more refugees. This is only the beginning, there are many more to come. Earth is getting hotter, places will become inhospitable, water will be scarce or polluted. We need to find a solution, but respect human lives.

I waited for the interviewer to ask the illegally entering migrants why they keep coming, but he didn't. I suspect their answer would not suit his purpose. If they say they are fleeing danger, one must ask them why the group is only men, no women seem to need to flee the danger. Let's be honest, they are economic migrants and they need to come legally. Every country has the right to know who is coming across their borders. Entering illegally is the same as invading.

To be fair. Turkey has a lot of migrants. too It's not just Turkey's problem, not just Greece's problem. No country should be forced to take too many migrants. The problem is that no one is honest about illegal migration. The left lie by manipulatively framing their politics as "human rights" and pretending it wouldn't eventually result if population replacement. The right expect other countries to take them but not their own. Many refugees themselves abuse asylum agreements by shopping around for the best deal and look to permanently colonize (effectively manipulating good will into a subtle form of invasion). Economic migrants shamelessly pretend to be "victims" . The right solution is moderation. Give temporary work visas to real refugees with the understanding they must leave when conditions ends in their own country. Distrbute load globally. Put economic migrants in jail then deport to country of origin not transit nations. Crack down on NGOs supporting mass human trafficking rings through sheer incompetence.

Greece has gone above and beyond accepting migrants and refugees. I’m proud that they finally putting measures in place especially during this pandemic and where their economy has suffered. Let the EU use another country for passage. Greece’s borders are closed!

Finally, the Greek state is doing what it is supposed to do. We are very proud of our police and army. Mr Vermuelen urgently needs to read the Greek history and realize that Greece has been a country of refugees throughout its history - but meanwhile enough is enough with all these empathetic journalists who are deliberately turning white to black. At least Macron and Draghi have got the message and hold against the German/Dutch misinterpretation of Dublin II. Between Greece and Afghanistan, there are a few Islamic countries that these poor young Afghan men had to cross before reaching the Greek-Turkish border. Maybe the Turkish Airlines could install a flight Ankara-Amsterdam to facilitate the easy access of these men to Northern Europe. The road over Evros and Aegean Sea will remain closed, unfortunately. The true refugees are very well treated in Greece - I can tell you firsthand.

Why should you pay higher taxes for immigrants? You will soon pay higher taxes anyway for the new austerity measures coming soon (nea litotita/mnhmonio). What you should do is take in families, spread them all over the country in small villages with few residents, which are villages that will become ghosts soon cause all young people left, give them land to work so they can feed their family and integrate them over time. 1 million young Greeks left the last 10 years to work abroad, they won't come back. The average Greek's age is 46. In 2030 it will be 50. We need young people to work. Pensions for the elderly won't pay themselves.

This Greek Lawyer is a S/B, his licence should be revoked for good. Helping illegals is not allowed by law, they should apply for asylum where they are and not cross illegally in another country. By law, any illegal crossing without official documents is subject to be arrested and sent back to his/her own country or where the crossing took place. Protecting Greece's borders is an International right and no one can dispute that.

@@RovexHD There is no beating. Claims are falsely made by these illegals in order for them to remain in the country. Greek Police do not beat anyone. We are not America, we respect human rights at the same time we want to live in peace and not having criminals entering illegally. We had criminals, killers, rapists, drug dealers & human traffickers entered illegal using false documents and while they've been in the country, they committed all sorts of crimes so I think it is acceptable if our Police used some force. I advice you to check facts before you comment. I live here you don't

Is this clown really comparing the Berlin wall to a border wall created by a nation that wants to protect their OWN borders? Some people really have no sense of nationalism at all or what it means to do what's best for your country. We are talking about a small nation with an already struggling economy, that in last coulple of years have been bombarded by illegal migrants, which have put even more strain on the country. And now mesures have been put in to keep their OWN borders secure, which is supported by a majority of Greeks, and you have the stomach to comparing this to the Berlin wall? Insane! Also an incredible biased report, you went in with the narrative that the wall and border security is bad and you built the story around that.

The truth is that European countries cannot take in the hordes of people from other countries at war or having problems. The same is true of the U.S. Our economies are fragile, war is imminent and we can barely provide for our poor people.

It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this. As the guy points out I’m the video there’s a lot of overlap between Turks and Greeks in the border regions. No matter where this wall goes people will be caught in the middle so to speak. Europe though can’t be expected to house migrants forever so unfortunate as this is I think it’s a necessary measure.

They would let them in, but they would cost the host country a lot more money than the men. At least the men can work and allegedly contribute to their new country. The elderly can't contribute as they cannot work also they wouldn't even bother to try to learn the language. The women who have young children wouldn't work until their children were at school so that could be any number of years, and the children may not work until they are in their 20's or 30's. The men on the other hand, can work straight away, so that's why it's them they allow them to seek refuge.

Greece just can not afford o take in economic migrants when there own people are unemployed. The Turkish do not want to work anyway. It's true no matter what you may say. They rather sell used shoes on sidewalk then have position with a legit company (job). Things continue to decline in the outer villages and many people leave because they can not pay taxes with no job. And then someone even worse condition ask for help it makes me wonder where are we headed? Who do we blame for current world conditions? Religion? Overpopulation? plain old hate your neighbor trope? How about the elites trying to trigger chaos to make changes?

Does the director propose that Greece shall open the border and provide free passage for the citizens of all the war or poverty striken countries of Asia & Africa, just because Greece is on the borders of Europe? How many refugees/migrants is Netherlands committed to accept in? How many the UK, France, Belgium etc? The migrants in the documentary said that they want to go to these countries, they don't want to stay in Greece. But the other European countries accept strictly very small numbers of people. But there's no blaming against them. Only on Greece who according to the director shall be the only open border state. Also, in the movie there's not even one question towards the refugees about the Turkish side? How do the Turkish gendarmerie treated them? What about the trafficking networks? So, much more questions should be considered, than those who do, in this one sided documentary.

This is Turkish propaganda against Greece . Turkey provides visas to these people and they come with Turkish Airlines planes . Then they work petty jobs in Eastern Thrace region awaiting an opportunity to cross the borders to Greece illegally . If they manage to do that they try to reach a country of Western Europe . If they get caught there they send them to Greece , not to Turkey or to the countries they come from . Why Greece should put up with this ? Greek people are suffering from poverty and half of young Greeks have migrated to other countries for work . If you want take the Afghans to your little country Netherlands ,and live happily ever after , there are millions of them willing to come .
