finally a band that covers a song and actually gives credit to the original singer/writer by letting John sing the last line, great cover and I'm sure John would have liked it. Green day gave the song a new meaning but I don't think that's bad, they used the song to make ppl aware of other problems in the world which is just as important

+letsHugElefanten You're absolutely right. This song was recorded a few years ago as a part of a John Lennon remembrance compilation called Instant Karma, which served as a benefit for amnesty international's attempts to help the crisis in Darfur (which is why the actually very real people with very real stories appear in this video). The songs weren't covered to benefit the bands, but to honor Lennon and what he stood for, and hopefully make the world a better place.

Idgaf what people think of Green Day, this is one of the greatest covers in the history of rock. I have unconditional respect for the members of the band. When they do something charitable, it comes from a real place, because they understand what it's like to grow up in poor households. It's never a PR thing with them. They help people not just because they care, but because they understand.

Same. It's 4am in the morning here. I just woke up and thought 'I need to hear that song'. The nostalgia, the reason for the cover, the amount my life has changed since first hearing this song (now married and have a son), Billie's haunting vocals, the music video and the way the world was back then (the world is still an ugly place but for different reasons now) it made me very emotional! The green day version is, (I don't want to say better) More... Alive than the John Lennon one, the electric guitar, the drums and Billie Joe's voice sounds perfect. And by the way, I read the comments and there was one that said that the video has nothing to do with the song, well, if you didn't know this, green day recorded this song in tribute to John Lennon and for the album called "the international campaign to Save Darfur... And I'm pretty sure that the people are from darfur
@crosshairs310 жыл бұрын
John Lennon's original was supposed to be simple. just John singing with his guitar. that is all you need and it gets its power from being simple. plus the song has nothing to do with darfur sudan palistine. it is a critique of western society

The lyrics in thjs song needs no musicsl instruments. The instruments just compliment the powerful words of this song . To some its a simple song but to others this song touches topics as relevant in Johns time as it still is in our time.
