I've seen Leslie units in junk stores more than a few times, which means that someone gutted a Hammond for it. Kind of a shame because it's hard to get that sound without the real deal. They were a popular mid-century middle-class status symbol in my recollection (or were marketed as such) and even my low-income family got talked into one with the no-interest monthly payment deal they offered. They were heavy as hell to haul around. One of my favorite bands, Blue Rodeo, featured some wild Hammond B-3 solos.

I'm gonna disagree that the lead singer of Sugarloaf sounds like Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. Ian has a much richer vibe...serious storytelling inflections in his vocals, and in his performances. Totally different. Jerry Corbetta had his own sound, smooth, fun, easy.

I agree completely---with Woolpack Grandmas, not with Andy & Alex. It's been a while since A&A reacted to a Jethro Tull song, so maybe the sound of Ian Anderson's voice has receded in their memories. They're definitely overdue for some more Tull reactions.

I bought Sugarloaf's first album and it was very good. It's got a great cover of The Band's Chest Fever. This song furthered my lifelong obsession with the Hammond B-3. They did have at least one other chart single called "Don't Call Us We'll Call You" which is practically a novelty record. I view it as a parting shot at the record business, funny and sardonic and sarcastic and a fun listen. The bass was played on the Hammond foot pedals.

Please consider Sausalito Summer Nights by Diesel for your one hit wonder series. It was recorded in 1979 but not released in the states until 1981 (I believe). I'm sure some will speak up if I am wrong. Anyway, it has what could be the catchiest guitar riff in music. All Aboard!

Thanks. I have been anxiously waiting for this one. The most persuasive story I have found about the origin of this song, is that Jerry Corbetta's girlfriend at the time was the green-eyed lady. She, Cathy Peacock, of Sacramento, California, has also confirmed this story. This provides another potential theme for an A&A poll - MUSE INSPIRED SONGS.
