Spoiler! I haven't seen it pointed out yet, so I might as well throw it out there. The main character and Felipe are the same person. This is revealed at the end when suddenly there is only one red car - the true reality. Felipe only seems to exist because the story is depicted through the eyes of an unreliable narrator, but I'd wager Felipe is actually an imagined projection of what the protagonist wishes he were... One that is unbeatably cultered in all ways, but as a result devoid of humanity and ugly as a person. In his quest to best Felipe, he only ends up harming himself (by damaging his car), because his nemesis is in fact himself.

Ill try my best to let everyone understand what's happening in short.... Basically he saw his own self unfold to what he wanted to be and hated it so much he wanted to end it and thus in the end he realised this fact. Edit: his other self (Felipe) is a representation of his greed

This is hilarious. He is seen as a ghoul bc he is a threat. We hear no words from the Ghoul's mouth bc whatever the says would be meaningless to Lloyd other than Lloyd's desire to one up him to stay ahead in the social / influence/ prestige circle. Sometimes some people will literally see you as ugly bc you represent a threat to their norms, status or desired status projectory. On the other end it can be very hard to manage when a person of influence or set of people of influence view you as the foe. You have to learn how to deftly navigate the situation without breaking often unspoken codes you may not necessarily be acquainted with. undoubtedly one or more may set a 'trap' in hopes to see you drown. Or perhaps as others have stated the ghoul is actually himself

Ok... this is my theory: Phillipe is not just one man. Phillipe is several men. We only hear the name “Phillipe” and we only see the same face, as does the main character. “Green Eyed” the main character is envious jealous of all those men Towards the end consumed with jealousy he starts to fantasise about killing “Phillipe... therefore a distortion of reality & imagination. - we are watching the scenes through someone elses Green Eyes... (the main character) it’s his perspective
