Tangled Man is a cover by the seminal English folk singer Anne Briggs. Below, Green explains the background to this single;
“Recently, in an interview for a forthcoming book about art and music in Leeds in the 70’s and 80’s, the author asked me, as an aside, if it were true that I was wearing Morris Dancer’s leg bells at the 1976 gig there by the Sex Pistols, Clash, Damned and Heartbreakers as other interviewees present that night had reported. My DNA was reconfigured that evening so my memory is hazy but it is very likely that I WAS wearing the leg bell pads made for me by a school friend some years before. In fact I may well have gone to the gig straight from the evening Morris dancing lessons I attended at Leeds university.
Because before punk gave me the liberty and license to make my own music I was geekily obsessed with ‘folk’. When I was fourteen I was enraptured by the Fairport Convention album “Liege and Lief” and became an underage regular at Dublin Moran’s folk club at the Castle, a very insalubrious pub down Newport docks. It’s there I was made aware of the Topic record label and the music of the Watersons, Martin Carthy (who I subsequently stalked . . . ask him) and Anne Briggs. The beautiful melodies Anne sang unaccompanied were profoundly affecting, her unornamented voice a precursor to the anti-professionalism of DIY. For a long while I walked about dressed like a 19th century farm labourer (with a bit of eyeliner) in a kind of hypnagogic reverie to an inner soundtrack of Northumbrian pipe tunes, Wassailing songs and Morris dances. Jesus.
Forward some 40 odd years and my friend and Scritti Politti bandmate Rhodri Marsden had been contacted to do an arrangement of an Anne Briggs song for a project with which he was involved. Knowing I was a fan he suggested maybe I’d like to take on the task. I was dead keen and recorded myself at home playing and singing my versions of a couple of the very few songs Annie had written many years ago. Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee at Rough Trade heard the stuff and liked it.. so here we are. . .
Right I’m off to find a couple of hankies and have a quick caper to Lads A Bunchum and The Shepherds Hey. See you soon.” Green Gartside

I heard this first of all during the 2020 lockdown, not long after it was released I suppose. It was a great comfort. It was just great to hear his voice again and total genius to cover an Anne Briggs so. Green finally coming out of the closet as far as his love of Folk music is concerned. His stories about following Martin Carthy around in the late 70s are great.

I’m paraphrasing but I remember reading in a magazine article from 1984, Green’s voice being described “as soft & sumptuous as a milky way.” You can’t beat ‘A littl bit o’ Scritti.’ What a joy that he’s still producing music of quality. Classy & sublime.

Impressive recall from 1984, the best year in pop in my view. His voice is not what it was ( unsurprising with the passage of time) and I can't say the song sounds that good in all honesty. However, his work has always been interesting and the Cupid And Psyche album is excellent. I bought it in 1985 and struggled to get into it but I have made up for lost time in recent years, Oh Patti.... from Provision is an amazing song.

What's interesting for me are; (i) the vocal harmonies using his voice (multi tracked- they're done very subtly you hardly notice at first and there weren't any on the 80s albums?); (ii) the sparse musical arrangement using mix of acoustic guitar and electronic sounds (like on BBWB?) so you hear all the details and (iii) the modal? folk melody by A Briggs which is quite unusual and is given a psychedelic? atmosphere. It's a grower too, 10 out of 10👍.

It was only ten days ago that I penned a very personal blog post about the Nottinghamshire Briggs side of my maternal family ancestry. Utterly freakily, last Friday, while I was in the middle of putting together a brand new article celebrating the brief but solid catalogue of Scritti Politti, their mainman Green Gartside suddenly drops a brand new solo single with both sides written by the acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Anne Briggs, who happens to be my cousin! Now that's what I call serendipity. Happy birthday Green 😁 stevepafford.com/scritti/

Lovely and in some way surprising, your note, dear Green. I lived a similar background with English folk around the same late 70s period (though Steeleye, June Tabor or Bert Jansch were in my daily joy since years before) listening likewise Jonathan Richman, Buzzcocks, Gary Numan... here in Mexico City. Obviously feedback was less than scarce... Just that, and to assure you my enormous admiration for your work.

Perfection as always from Green. Devouring this on an hourly basis, along with the equally brilliant B-Side. Now, is there any chance you can hurry him along with the next Scritti album that he has been promising for years? Pretty please? Oh, and whatever happened to the touted remastered reissues of the back catalogue? Those would be a lovely thing to have! :-)

@@SpookOneMusic I like the stuff with David Gamson, but equally I dont think he needs Gamson in order to produce great work. This is beautiful and he is wearing his 'folk' heart on his sleeve now. It's come full circle, he's finally embracing that stuff and letting it into his music. I love the story of him going to see the Sex Pistols wearing Morris bells.
