Green Mountain Railroad: "Manned Helpers", Roaring EMDs, Challenging Grades, and STUNNING Scenery!

8 ай бұрынYes, the title is slightly misleading. The helpers were not actually pushing, but "manned helpers!" was the first thought I had upon seeing them, and it stuck...
It's August 22nd, 2023, the second of my three days in Vermont, and I'm heading to possibly the most well known VRS property: The Green Mountain Railroad. After watching the Florence Switcher (FLSW) switch cars and run south to Rutland, I follow GMRC 263, which appeared to have manned helpers... in reality, just the Green Mountain Extra doing some MOW work at washout sites.
I finish the day with Bellows Falls Switcher DASW, GMRC 264, and the Rutland Extra running west.

Nice video. Those tank cars pick up lime slurry at the plant in Florence. Vermont has lots of valuable rock - lime, granite and marble.

VRS is a first class operation. When in Burlington I always look them up. Happy Thanksgiving (U.S.) from Canada. Some great shots Harrison, didn't know that trestle was there !

That’s an extremely broad question. What switcher/train are you wondering about?

@@Off-roading1 Florence Switcher goes on duty at 0630 usually. Goes south after RDBD passes around 8 and goes north out of Rutland after Amtrak around noon

So North Country Trains, do you really think the conductor was riding that tank car properly? And you put that in video? Hey, I blame the conductor...But still...

What exactly was wrong with how he was riding it? 3 points of contact on the car and that’s the only way I have seen guys ride tank cars for years. In fact I have seen a trainer/ safety guy, on CP riding a car the same way.

How else are you supposed to ride a tank car? I’ve seen some “improper” positions and I typically cut them out… nothing wrong with that, standard procedure for riding tank cars…

Riding the end of the platform? And where does he go if he falls? RIGHT IN THE GAUGE! And no, you didn't see a CP "safety guy" riding a tank car like that.

@@bobbyviti7794 yes I did, that’s how they train them. Maybe step outside and take a look around, this is the only way you will see them riding tank cars.

@@Maine_Railfan Gotta love when people who have never stepped foot on railroad equipment, let alone observed railroad operations, think they understand safe procedure.
