Green sandpipers are common waders, but prone to being solitary birds. If you flush one there is a very strong probability that they will return to exactly the same place within 10-30 minutes. The problem being that they do not like hides. With Green sandpipers you need to leave a hide in situ for a couple of days for them to get used to it.
I was lucky enough not just to get Green sandpiper, but Common snipe too and better still they started to fight giving some interesting slow motion video. I used the Panosonic Lumix GH6 for video shooting at 4K 120fps and the OM-1 camera for stills photography. With both cameras I used the Olympus 150-400mm zoom.

Superb video, really captured bird behaviour well. I wondered about the sensitivity to the hide, perhaps they've seen Dr. Who and think that you are a prototype Dalek. 🤣

Awesome close up video! Those birds migrate here in the Philippines and they are indeed very wary and shy birds. Too difficult to get a close shot.

fabulous video thanks so much. back in 2017 we had a good rain season in November and December, really unusual for Jeddah, so lots of swamps formed in the area North west of the city, use to go there until March and enjoy snips and jack snips as both are wintering birds here along with green sandpiper and wood sands pipers, little grebes, moorhens and coots, as well as lots of herons and the very noisy spur winged plovers. they were not that close to take nice shots so i did mostly videos, wish you were there it would have been a marvelous documentry. not only there birds also many song birds like form the locals the black bush robin, weavers and graceful pirina and blackstarts and from wintering birds Serbian stonechats and Cretzschmar's bunting as well as white and citrine wagtails.

they are north to us so i guess migration is over there and most of there birds came to us or maybe went further south. even here it tend to become rather slow during Nov-Jan unless one find a spot like i described above. but our locals become very fun to watch.

Re-adding my comment that didn't show up (apparently YT doesn't like it when you put a link in it). Thanks Mike! Amazing footage. Still haven't been able to take a decent picture of a snipe, and I've been chasing them for almost a month now. This doesn't solve my problem but I enjoyed the video very much. You must have some unique subspecies in the UK 🙂, cause my snipes do not ever show up in the open like that. Always hiding, sleeping and feeding among vegetation (mostly reeds). The only photo I've gotten was taken by sneaking up on them by crawling through mud, across riverside reeds and burdock. Not once have I seen one during my countless hide or lie-down camo net stints. They seem to only be obtainable via stalking. Regards from Poland!

Hi Mike, nice video as always. Maybe I could express a wish at this point: I mainly use my camera for taking photos, but your videos inspire me to shoot a video too. I especially like, like you, the ability to slow down videos. all movements appear calmer and more elegant. Maybe you can show how such a KZfaq video is produced. How you cut the videos, set the music, what software you use, etc. Greetings.

Fascinating behavioural captures. I've been after photographing both species as they are widespread on the huge site I frequent. The difficulty being the large number of pools, and it is very difficult to get a clear view of the edges of the pools. This makes it difficult to know which pools to stake out. The other year, I built a low hide with permissions, overlooking the edge of a large pool. Then someone further down, cleared out the drain, the water dropped, and suddenly the edge of the pool was 100 yards away, the other side of a line of rushes - so all my plans came to nothing. Anyway, I got a lot of important insights from your video, and I've got a portable low hide now, so hoping for some success some time. Many thanks.

Hi Mike, I’m also shooting with the GH6 for video and the OM-1 for stills. Amazing Cameras. I prefer the OM-1 much better and would love to have 4k120 on it. But the GH6 is also a wonderful Camera! I work with the LUMIX Cameras since 2013 for video work and the dust in sensor is something that we need to learn to work around. I tend to change lenses only at home, planning carefully which lens should I use for the day. Normally I leave the GH6 with the Olympus 12-100mm f4 or the Leica 100-400mm mounted. Also at home I have the habit of carefully cleaning the sensor with air. With the OM-1 I never needed to clean! Simply amazing! Sometimes I like to take stills using the SH1 120fps and merging the pictures in a sequence getting a 3,5 seconds slow motion 5.2k 4:3. Is not the best option but I can get very good results. The problem here is the short OM1 buffer size which only allow a 90fps, meaning about 3,5 seconds on 24p playback.

Maybe the dust is being made worse by blowing with a normal blower as they produce statically charged air. You can now buy antistatic blowers which are supposed to stop this issue. At least they have worked for me. Having said that I always blow the camera and lens on every change of lens. Hope that may help.

I've never seen a Green Sandpiper although they are known to visit Australia. I have seen the Common Sandpiper but as with many of these waders, I don't always know what I'm looking at until I look at them on my computer. Interesting behaviour between the two species. At one stage I was fully expecting the hide to be stolen.

Watching your videos Mike, has made me realise I've got a LONG way to go as far as videography is concerned! But at least I'm having a go. Rather than use my stills camera, I have bought myself a video camera. The quality isn't great, but it'll do for the time being, until such time as I can afford to upgrade. Kind regards.
