Lyrics:
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends
Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends...

Yup, been haunting me ever since it was released as a single of the album in June of 2005 when I was in my 20's in Iraq. The lose of his father hit my heart as it was super close to how I lost mine. Than the Video was made after I'd done two extended tours and lost the girl, but are kids are now the new gen🙊🙉🙈

This song was in my 25 year old sons phone. He died on 9-23-2014. His summers will never end. My heart just breaks everyday, but hes never gonna feel pain again. Just love. I've been raising his son, as my grandfather did for me. Hes 9 now and i recognize everyday, hes just like his dad. I got a do-over, but ive give my life for them to grow up together. Honor the tears, they cleanse the soul..

aye i really feel for you. This song my brother used to play greenday across from my room from our connecting bathroom, I could hear it all the time. He loved them as much as any kid could at that time. had posters all over his walls. Spiked his hair and started dressing emo. I remember him playing this song.. Different times man. I lost my brother( a stupid heroin overdose) when he was 25 as well in september of 2016...ironic. I could not wait for september end but the truth is, is that the rest of my life I will always have this incident and loss just there. Like always there. Life is jst not the same anymore

Billie, the singer, wrote this about his father who tragically died in September when he was 10. He said, “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, to his mother when she checked on him after he ran home from the funeral because he couldn’t handle it. 7 years after his father passed, he joined Green Day, and 20 years after his dad passed, he and Green Day wrote the song. People absolutely can joke about this song, I’m just explaining the meaning of the title if anyone is curious. Edit: Thank you for all the likes! Green Day fans are the best! Edit in 2024. Crazy how like the lyrics in this song go, “20 years has gone so fast,” this album and song officially turn 20 years old this September 21st! 20 years really has gone so fast! Green Day forever!! 💚💚💚💚

Short story behind the song... Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song about his father, who died of cancer on September 1, 1982 when Billie was just 10 years old. At his father's funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie's room, Billie simply said, "Wake me up when September ends," hence the title. Pretty darn sad but awesome of BJA at the same time. If that's true... Is pretty cool.

This video greatly exaggerates the girlfriend's part. Most guys would eventually get a "Dear John". 'Love you forever? - Yeah, right! Seriously though, if there aren't any children in common around to be raised, why would they wait for our asses to come back home from War when both our bodies and our minds aren't what they were before we were sent away?

I can't really call myself a Green Day fan, but this song hits home. Did two tours in Afghanistan, 2009 and 2011, when I was in the Marines. First time I was in combat I was 19. Dozens of firefights later and all I wanted was to go home. Now I live with it every night I go to sleep. People here really have no idea how lucky they are that they'll never have to see the things that we saw.

My dad passed away September 7th 2012 I was only 17, then I met my amazing husband a couple weeks after and when he showed me his ID, his birthday is the same day my dad died. Broke my heart but I also feel like it was a sign we were meant to be together. And we have since and have a beautiful family now.

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song about his father, who died of cancer on September 1st, 1982. At his father’s funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie’s room, Billie simply said, “Wake me up when September ends,” hence the title.

This song was written by Billy Joe Armstrong in memory of his father who died of cancer on Sept 1, 1982 when he was 10 years old. I've listened to this song over 50 times, and each time streams of tears run down my face. The loss of one's parent can be very painful especially when one loses a parent as a child. Upon hearing the news of his father's death , Billy Joe told his mother "Wake me up when September ends". His father would have been so proud of his son if he knew how successful and well known he has become in the world of music.

Royal Military College of Canada graduate here. When we were first year cadets, this was the lullaby that senior cadets played to us at night. The irony of the phrase "Wake me up when September ends" was that the worst and the most physically and psychologically demanding phase ended after five weeks of hell, in the first week of September, and then we could join the rest of the cadet wing as full members, with an RMC cap badge, instead of a cornflake. I still have my stone with which I rang the bell on parade square at the end of FYOP obstacle course.

I fuckin hate September. I honestly wish I could sleep through the entire next 4 months, every year. My only child passed away back in 2014. Her bday is Sept 11 and it really pains me to live through this every year, now. This year, she'd be 7 years old. Unfortunately that will never happen because of her mother's negligence and carelessness. Texting and driving is what caused the death of my child. Her mother was doing it and went off the roadway. The car spun out of control, through a ditch, and into a utility pole right where my daughter was strapped into her car seat. She didn't make it through the night. 5 years later and I still can't deal with it. 😔 I used to love September. Especially after my daughter was born only 9 days before my bday. For the next 22 months, I looked forward to September. Then it all came crashing down. 😔 I miss her dearly.

Song has a lot of significance for me. Right after September ended in 2023 my intestines became infected and I was sedated so they could remove them. I almost died of blood loss during the surgery and I’m still struggling with the effects of only having 18 inches of small intestine today. This song reminds me of waking up after all of the hallucinations and figuring out what happened to me.

@@shoegame1201 I just read it on Wikipedia (before I read this): esophagus cancer in September of 1982, when Billie was 10. I also read somewhere else (thought it was wiki but I couldn’t find it again as I wanted to quote it) that as a child, following his father’s death, his mom would try to get him to come out of his room, to which he’d respond, “Wake me up when September ends.” 39 years gone so fast…

This song really hits home now... My parents passed away Sept. 2020 from complications due to Covid... My father passed first and mother seconds after. Though they passed hand in hand, it's the hardest thing I've ever dealt with. I nearly died from a broken heart but knew I had to pull myself out of that dark place to take care of my own family.

the scene where the girl has to pay for their date because the guy was clearly struggling financially hit me hard, reminded me of the times when my ex girlfriend has to pay in most of our dates because I was struggling too I decided to join the merchant marine so that I can earn some money but I'll be away for a long time, she said that she couldn't wait for me and it didn't work out we broke up a month ago and this song just hits home.

Man, where does time go? Seems like yesterday my kids were just babies running around without a care in the world and now about to graduate and head out into the world on their own. Kills me to picture them leaving in my head. Wish we all had more time in this place. Hope anyone that reads this is happy and surrounded by people that love them.

With the events of the world at the time, i thought i would never see her alive again when she got posted to her first ship. She came back, 90% disabled per the VA after 5 years in..
