Chrysler needed to do something after the K-cars were losing popularity due to the competition changing. In 1993 the LH platform was released to the public and it was a hit! The Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Chrysler Concorde would all share this platform. After a few years, it was time for the LH's second iteration. 1998 would debut this all-new bubbly design and like the first generation, they sold very well. Looking at Chrysler now compared to a little over 20 years ago so much has changed. I wanted to shed some light on these full-size sedans as they are becoming more and more rare.
Thank you all for watching!

I happen to know a lot about these LH sedans and there’s some very interesting history behind the 300m. Eagle was of course making the Vision in its first gen but the 300m was supposed to be the 2nd gen Vision. It was so far along in development that they had already shipped out a couple test mules to Europe before Eagle was axed so instead of throwing away all that R&D on a production ready model, they decided to delay the launch til 1999 (it was originally set to debut along side the Intrepid and Concorde in 1998) and essentially stuck Chrysler badges on it and decided to continue the 300 letter series cars with M. If any of you get to have the chance to look around at a 300m, you can lift up the trunk carpet and it will say Eagle on the part supplier tag instead of Chrysler.

I bought a '98 Concorde Lxi from my Uncle's estate. It was three years old and only had three thousand miles on it, so essentially a new car. It was loaded with every option you could possible imagine for 1998. I put over 200,000 miles on it and was one of the best cars I ever owned. On top of all that, in my opinion it was a beautiful car.

There is one thing you forgot to mention that is the LH platform was a longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive
@autochatter

And the platform was at the very least heavily inspired by the AMC and Renault designed Eagle Premier. Which also had the drivetrain setup like that and cab forward design. Chrysler got some of the same people who designed the Premier in their AMC acquisition that worked on the LH platform.

The 300M was an underrated car imho, I've driven one for two months after I had also driven an automatic Eagle vision for a similar period of time. The 300M was surprisingly well mannered at low speeds, though could really be quite fun at higher speeds and had much more stability and roadfeel than the typical barges they had on offer at chrysler as well (read LHS and Concorde). It wasn't at the same level of handling as the late first gen Audi S8 I drove, but remarkably close and in truth a very good contender to the Cadillac STS (which I've also driven...the life of a car collector and dealer never ends)

Same. I like a lot of the 90s rounded styling everyone seems to hate, although it could have a lot to do with early childhood nostalgia of seeing those cars on the road since I was born in '96. The Concorde looks quite dumb with that wide mouth, but even it has a sort of charm to it.

They were great highway cruisers. They had more of a solid sport ride. The Concorde LXi was more quiet and “luxurious”. Thank you for making the video. I really enjoyed it! Where were you able to find the production numbers. I have often had trouble finding such information my own searches. I have a correction on the horsepower numbers. The LHS and 300M were identical on the horsepower and torque output from 99 through 2001. The 250 horsepower rating started in 2002 on the 300M And during that same year Chrysler released the 300M special which had 255 horsepower and 258 ft-lbs of torque. I think the 300M was treated as being a step up to the LHS because it reflected the change in the luxury market to a more europeanized style sedan over traditional American. The 300M was of the three the most similarly sized and tuned to the European sports sedans. Also I think the principal applies here that if you're going to offer something new in a premium package why not place it above your old premium package and try to get a higher price. Looking at the sales number it worked quite well outselling the LHS. I have often thought that after Chrysler added the 300M to its own lineup, they should have just moved the Concorde over to Plymouth. The Concorde was a nice car, but it wasn't reaching the designation as near luxury unlike the 300M and LHS. Having a softer offering under Plymouth would have given customers turned off by the Intrepid another option for a competitive price which the Concord offered. Of the second generation LH platform, I had a intrepid ES from O2 and a LHS from 99. After having a first generation 97 Intrepid, the second generation Intrepid was more refined but it was too big it was floatier compared to the first generation The styling wasn't as good in my opinion. It did age better though, and the interior was upgraded. The LHS was a dramatic improvement in every capacity versus the Intrepid. When people want to complain about badge engineering abuse, this should not be cited as an example of it. The seats, the gauges, the dash, The front and rear, the suspension, and so forth work very different and how it felt. Another relative in my household had a 300M. Between the four LH cars, the 300M was my favorite. It was more firmly tuned, it had the full down rear seats which the LHS didn't have, the auto stick was fun, in the styling was fantastic. The advantage of a 300M is that it was more nimble and sportier with having a smaller trunk which was still very large. The LHS was better for people who genuinely needed the extra trunk space even though it wouldn't fold down. I would not want a supercharged 3800. The problem with the supercharged 3800 is you have to use premium fuel or risk detonation and the fuel economy in the real world was a considerable decrease over the standard 3,800. Between the LeSabre and Park avenue versus the LH sedans, the LH sedans were more well balanced. The seats were still soft yet more supportive. The styling was more fluid. The suspensions were The right balance between firm and float versus the GM was just float really. I don't recall ever driving an Aurora but the people that I knew that had them were not immune to the interiors falling apart. I would be very concerned about having either the North Star or the short star engines due to the head gasket problems (much like I would be concerned about the sludge problems with the 2.7 V6 hence the reason why I never bought one with that engine). My experience driving a Grand Marquis is that they will outlast either an LH or a LeSabre. For my taste, they're way too floaty and the seats are not supported enough And they are not good enough in the snow. Given the choice I would pick any of the non 2.7 powered LH vehicles, the Buicks, The Bonneville, The 88 / LSS, and the Grand Marquis in that order And I would pick them over pretty much anything new being sold today by pretty much anyone.

Wifey and I bought a '99 Dodge Intrepid ES in 2002 following the birth of offspring #2. It replaced a '95 Mazda 626, which had a 2.5L V6 with a manual transmission. The driving experience could not have been more different: from flingable to floating, from sporty to stodgy, from performance-oriented to perfunctory. That said, after accepting the fact that the Dodge was designed to be family-first rather than fun-first, we grew to really appreciate it. It had good power from the 3.2L V6 and solid reliability. Where is shined was the roominess of the cabin on long road trips. It made 2 13-hour road trips to Disney while we owned it and those treks were reasonably enjoyable thanks to that car. It convinced us to stay in the Dodge family after egg #3 was fertilized. That was a Dodge Caravan. It, conversely, was a huge disappointment (loud, rough and unreliable) even though it was largely based on the same platform. We haven't owned a Chrysler product since.

Chrysler in the late 90's to the mid 00's are underrated for sure. I knew a guy who had a 2000 300M and it was a nice car huge amounts of interior room and had a good ride to it. My grandad for 15 years had a 2001 sebring sedan with the 2.4 and the only thing that even went wrong with the car was a CV axle and the car had over 200k on it. Very roomy on the inside for the size of the car. I know the sebring is the tier below these but still very similar.

In the early 2000s I seriously considered a 300M. I liked it, a lot, really. Shorter than the LHS, more aggressive looking, decent punch for the time. In the end I went with a Bonneville SSEi, and looking back I probably made the wrong decision. Probably pulled in by the heads- up display which seemed pretty trick at the time, and it was one of the few 12 disc CD changers on market in a time when that meant something on a long trip. But it was bigger and clumsier, though with better and more adjustable seats - again, that was important to me. Still, I remember when they cab forward LH cars first came out - I was driving a Taurus - colleague bought an Intrepid ES and wait, what - someone had something better on the market! Aside from the 300M, I prefer the first gen of these - sharper styling works better than the bar of soap. In terms of differences beyond being 10" shorter (really does help) the 300M had a lower final drive for a bit more snap and the standard suspension was firmer than the LHS, though I with the LHS adjustible suspension on sport, you would match that.

i love my '99' 300M it just turned 88,000 miles and has been garage kept and never seen so much as an ice cube on the road during the winter months. it's in near showroom condition top to bottom, front to rear. anybody that craps on these cars more than likely didn't maintain them on a regular basis. the rear lights are back up lights to let people know theres a car moving in reverse. my 300M does have fog lights, it also has the performance handling package which includes a rear deck spoiler.that gives it a sportier look. i still have the window sticker, it sold for just under $29.000. there's no way in hell i would have any GM product from those years. certain fords, yes. the 300 drives like any euro would drive, seeing how mercedes had a hand in its design.and it's got the juice where it counts at highway speeds. just today i was at 75 MPH i eased my foot down and was quickly over 100 with plenty more pedal to go. these cars are really fun to drive. As for the Concorde and LHS, they didn’t merge. The Concorde simply had a “facelift” where they stuck on the front and rear end of the LHS. The Concorde introduced a new top of the line trim on top of the LX and LXi called the Limited which for all intents and purposes is just a SWB LHS. All LH production continued until August of 2003 but so many LH sedans were left on the lot that the 2003 models were carried over as 2004 models to try to still sell them as brand new models.

I remember seeing the Intrepid when they were first released and 12 year old me loved the front end, but the long rear deck was proportioned awkwardly.... never could wrap my head around that styling. The 300M was a big deal when it came out. Slotted in against the mercury Marauder and the Impala SS. Another banger on the minutiae of 90s cars!

I remember going to a Chrysler/Dodge dealership in Brooklyn NY in the early 2000’s to look at a Concorde with my Mom. she previously had a Buick GS sedan which had some electrical gremlins and was considering another brand. upon seeing the Concorde in person she decided it was too large and got another Regal.

I just assumed the 300M was made to try to get back the R&D money as it was destined to be the Eagle Vision...Before Eagle was killed. Great vid...The 2.7 engines are known for issues..Water pump leaks internally, getting into the oil and eventually leading to sludge in the engine. By the time you realize it, the motor is prob toast. Ive witnessed Concordes and some of the others with the 3.5 driven some serious miles.

I had a '99 LHS. It was quick (for the time,) comfortable, and incredibly spacious. Unfortunately it was also a big piece of Chrysler... The fit and finish of the vehicle were poor, there were squeaks and rattles EVERYWHERE, and everything electronic failed over time. The heated seat once even left "grill marks" on my back as the thermostat for it had failed in the "on" position. It also ate through tires. It came with Goodyear Eagle LS tires which made it feel surefooted, but they only lasted 20k - 30k miles. The LHS also got great fuel economy. I observed 30 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg around town. Would I have another one? No. I'd rather have a Volvo S80. The only thing sketchy in those was the transmission.

The Chrysler LH platform was basically Chrysler catching up to what Honda, Toyota, etc had been doing since the 1980s. Don't get me wrong - this is one of those cases where Chrysler scaled it up, and with impressive results - the resulting cars were really nice, looked good, and drove well. Although it was aging by the mid 2000s, killing it was an error, and ultimately put Chrysler where it is today -> on the ropes.

IMHO I think "fleet" (corporate) sales helped keep these cars on the road and seeing so many of them kind of persuaded the masses to buy the cars like K-cars in the 80's, side note my first car was an ex pizza delivery car bare bones 86' Ford Escort ( pizza hut switch to the Ford Ranger). So seeing so many would get people into the show rooms or on the Lot

The reason why they had 3 full sized cars is because they all came in different flavors for people with different tastes. Obviously the Concorde was to compete with the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Bonneville, LeSabre, & Eighty-Eight. The LHS was designed to compete with the SLS, first gen Aurora, Park Avenue Ultra & Continental. The 300M was designed to compete with the second gen Aurora, STS, SSEi, SHO, 3.2 TL, ES300/330, Millennia S & Diamante/VRX.

You did an excellent job and did your homework as well. I liked the 1994-1997 New Yorker/LHS. The roofline on that car was inspired from Jaguar. It looked like a Oldsmobile Ninety Eight from the rear. It was a redesign of the generation from 1988-1993. The LHS was the Imperial replacement as you explained. You described the change well and the buyers they were seeking. The 300 M replaced Eagle Vision as you stated. The 300 M was supposed to be the next Eagle Vision and be more international in size for export. Eagle was phased out and the Vision did not sell well. The Vision looked like an Oldsmobile in the front. The LHS first generation could be had with a front bench seat option. I saw it and could not believe it. The white lights in the rear of the LHS were the backup lights. You are also correct as they merged the Concorde and LHS and it became Concorde Limited as you said. The Concorde offered a front bench seat option. The Chevrolet Impala was the last front bench sedan. GM thought about placing a front bench seat in he last Impala, but walked away from that saying the market changed and they wanted to be more contemporary. Thank you for the video.

Sometimes it's a generational thing. My grandfather only bought Fords. Back when America was THEE manufacturing capitol of EVERYTHING In the World, people became loyal to one brand and you STAYED Loyal no matter what. Example: I will NEVER EVER EVER buy a foreign car!!!!! I'm probably one of the last of the "Buy American" Generation Nexters. I also like to root for the Little Guy. Chrysler has always been the Little Guy out of the Big Three in my lifetime.

Both the LHS & 300M initially had 253hp/255tq. The figures got reduced in 2001 for both to 250hp/250tq. Don't ask because nobody knows why. I suspect programming for lower octane fuel is the culprit. The 300M Special got 255hp/258tq because of a lower restriction dual exit exhaust system. All LHS & 300M engines are "High Output". They were more powerful than the Mercedes 3.5 & Nissan's 3.5 at the time.
