The kid became a man. He didn’t quit! He worked to the point of being broken and kept on going until he was officially relieved and told he could do no more for safety reasons. Even though he can not do that job at that movement, he earned respect and perhaps with some strength and staminas training, he can go back and work on a crab boat.

It's wholesome that the crew could let him know that he wasn't crabbing material. Just like my grandad told me before I enlisted: "Son, you'll find out real quick if you're meant for the Army."

Working on a crab ship is one of the hardest jobs you can do. You make good money, but it will drain you. I don't blame the dude for being so exhausted. I know I wouldn't be able to handle it.

it's interesting to me how they all talk about how they love fishing and at the same time all want the season to be over so they can go home.

Whenever I get it in my dumb head that I want to leave it all behind and be a deckhand on a crab boat, I come back to this video. I'm thirty and this kid looks like he is barely out his twentys and he gave it his all and couldn't hack it. I'd be dead in a day or just over board. Mad respect.

you learn from what you do, and take it with you, that guy did a great job even if he broke down, and no one can take that from him ever, all respect to him for trying his best, i think everyone can agree he tried his best there and admitted himself that he couldnt do it, and wasnt afraid of showing that he couldnt handle it, even going so far as reaching out for help, THAT shows a true man.

It's like your first military training [insert your particular military here]. Your trainers can teach and talk and quietly root for you, but at some point it comes down to what's inside you. You have to conquer fatigue, fear, doubt, and no small amount of anger in order to succeed. Some have it, some don't. Not everybody is cut out for the difficulties and brutalities of life on the deck of a ship, where you're only as good as the last shift you put in, where the environment is a pressure cooker of emotions, and where coping skills are the most valuable skills you have. There is absolutely no shame whatsoever in realizing that you're in the wrong spot for you. The only shame is when you put somebody else's life in jeopardy because you're not packing the gear to either do the job or admit that you can't do the job. And for the record, I served in the US Army... I tried fishing as a kid and couldn't cut it. Hell, I tried college after I got out the military. That went 'boink' too. But I never stopped trying to find that niche.

That first trip is always the hardest. Once you get your sea legs it gets easier everytime till it's second nature and you miss being out there. *And u get paid more money

Had the same shit happen to me tow boating working on coal barges. Hands down one of the worst job experiences of my life. my body and mind just isn't built for it, the seclusion being out on the river for 7 days straight killed me along with getting very little sleep and working with assholes on a small tin can. Just admitted to myself i cant do it and i felt so much better when i left. i used that job as a learning experience in life. don't ever just chase a job for the money its never worth it, mental health is everything.

I mean he is not wrong, might be good lad, but if he was sheltered tought luck. Who ever worked 14-16 hour shifts for 7 days know the struggle. I also did that 300 days straight no days off on ships. First month was hell. After that you get used to sleeping 4 hours for months, no day off.

As far as I can tell the rigors of that job destroys just about everyone associated with it, from the captain's on down to the greenhorns. It's a rare human being who can thrive on all of that excitement and hardship mixed around and live a normal life around it all. Wild Bill is one of those guys who manages to pull it off with style. I was on the Alaskan sea freeze. It's actually cool af and a lot more respectful. The amount of injuries we all endured and kept going. I had people from every where. Almost all of us were like brothers. We talked a lot of shit to each other, it was hilarious. The Samoans protected everyone like family, we all have a lot of respect and love for each other. One of the coolest experiences I've ever had. 😎 I had the hardest job on the processing vessel. My suggestion, build cardio, lift 50 lbs for 16 hours a day, get used to sleeping while laying on the floor. Mine had a A,B,C crew. Different hours, basically one to two crews could be working at the same time. If you're interested go on indeed and do a app.

Everyone has limitations on what they can take. Saying that only some people have those limits makes me disgusted to see you at the helm, gathering dust. You're one of those people if that's truly what you believe. We all come from our own unpaved Road. No one person knows how dense the foliage was and how steep the incline or decline was through the beginning of someone's life, unless you were walking parallel with them.

My father did this in Alaska during the 70s and 80s, it is one of the most difficult, punishing, and dangerous jobs in the world. Your body and mind need to have durability and stamina that most people simply DO NOT HAVE. Skill helps greatly, but you have to be able to last long enough to obtain that experience and develop that skill, most people can't even get that far. Even then, there is an element of luck involved. People literally die out there all the time. Good, experienced people have died. These are some of the most inhospitable seas in the world and humans really are not meant to be there. It's one of the reasons drug and alcohol addiction is such a problem for the people in this industry, they do anything to cope. There is no shame in admitting you can't do it and quitting, the ocean defeats everyone eventually.

Yano on a construction site he's probably one of the best workers there but this fishing is just different gravy. Imagine going for 24-30 hrs straight in freezing wet weather. The floor literally never stays still, everything is against you you're constantly slipping and trying to stand up. You're constantly working flat out, You can't switch off for a second incase of waves or if someone gets hurt. All that combined and just the sheer lack of sleep just shows these lads are machines.

One of the few jobs as and more at times physically demanding than commercial roofing. I would love to do this kind of work but I love what I do more, something about being 30 stories in the air doing a tear off or hanging off the side of a highrise hotel in a harness and putting brackets up for the railing before the job. I just love it

Wanted to do this back in the day A, didn't have the training these guys do for cold weather work and survival B, was a deckhand on sportfishing boats out of San Diego. Completely different fishing types and I'm glad i didn't attempt it

Honestly i dont blame him. I did turn over for the arena where i live, Taking tempered glass pannels out, taking the boards out, covering ice with ice decking and then setting out chairs and even i have seen people come in with a high and mighty attitude and leave at the end of the night singing a different tune because We get a break *IF* we are ahead of schedule. Because that has to be done that night, there is no ifs ands or buts, it has to be turned over and ready by the time the crew trucks for a concert get there or morning of a hockey game. Crab fishing, honestly if i could try it... Yeah i would have tried it just to see what it was like. Would i want to do it for years and years? absolutely not. Its really not easy and its really dangerous. In the end though no one has the right to give the kid grief because in the end he tried, and hey he made it through the season, he pushed through the pain until the end so that in its self is an achievement. Blake has heart and that alone is gonna take him places.
