My family and I decided to take on a serious project: building a DIY 16' x 28' greenhouse from timber on our property. We cut the timbers into useable 6"x6" White Oak beams, which we then used to support the overall structure. I guess each White Oak post in our greenhouse weighed over 100 pounds. Our tractor and our friend John were both lifesavers. Installing the post in the ground was easy using Fast2K. You have seen us use Fast2k many times on the homestead. It has never failed us. #greenhouse
We thank H.B. Fuller and the Fast2K team for partnering with us on this build. They make products we believe in. Fast2K Info: fast2k.com/product/deck-post-...

Suggestion: gas actuated piston vents exist. No electricity. When it gets hot, the gas inside the piston expands and pushes the piston which can open a flap for ventilation.

Just as a sidenote, make sure you seal the top and bottom of your double wall poly carbonate panels. They make aluminum tape for the top and venting tape for the bottom. This keeps dust and bugs out of the panels, but allows moisture to weep out of the bottom keeping your panels clear.

My wife and I loved this video! We watch a dozen or so “homesteading” channels a week. Yours is VERY well edited and presented WITHOUT a bunch of opinion promoting your personal agendas. We stumbled across your video on the firewood storage shed and thought it was one of the nicest we’ve seen. When this popped up as an offering, we watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Your attention to details, including when expressing what you are about to do and why, make for great viewing. Truly appreciate your willingness to let the Light in you both shine in a friendly, loving way. After viewing your of the Man cage in this video and your Mini Clip video, I am sending a suggestion to Al & Gina at LUMNAH ACRES to consider adding both to his other implements for his 474, which he loves. They are also an awesome Christian, homesteading couple in New Hampshire. We are now a subscriber!

Nice work! Love the oversized Timbers, especially the fact that they were home grown. A suggestion: you might want to look into some ventilation mechanisms. Come summer it will be too hot in there to grow anything, and it will help with the condensation and high humidity. Can’t wait to see the next phases…

Well done video. I'm not sure where you are located, but I think your greenhouse is going to need much better ventilation during the warmer months for both heat and humidity control. Possibly electric exhaust fans at both ends and suspended fans for moving air within the building. You might consider looking at geothermal technology, which can efficiently regulate air temperature in all seasons. I'm a great fan of geothermal. We use it in Alberta Canada, where the winters reach -40 Celsius and the summers are hot.

Great build start to finish I would recommend chickens as feeding them green produces more natural soil as compost for your beds and no smells . Second as your soil is in the beds a layer of mulch and wood chips as a secondary feed for the plants plus it retains much needed moisture and you can fill the bottoms with larger logs to break down over time. It is a method I have used and works very well for me

Solar vents are what I use with an exhaust fan, that’s a large greenhouse so a large thermostatic controlled 1:00:31 exhaust fan with air inlets down low, solar vents in roof will need frame to attach solar vent too. The thematically controlled solar vents are wax filled shock that opens as it warms up, there adjustable, until you get vents in you have a solar kiln, so what I’m saying is hold off growing inside, also shade cloth will help with plants getting to hot. Here in alaska until trees leaves come in the spring the green house can get very hot. Great team work and with greenhouse build

Thank you for the information. We have been looking for different fan options. It was around 35 degrees outside last week, but the inside was over 90 degrees during the peak of the day. This is with the vent cap left open!

Amazing build and video!! If you’re looking for a cheap and efficient way of heating in the winter months place large black jugs (anything from painted black Arizona jugs to 55 gallon stew drums) filled with water all over the greenhouse and it will pull in the heat from the sun and disperse it throughout the rest of the day/night! Thanks for all the videos and tips!

You sure can’t beat those Stanley FatMax tape measures! I’ve bought dozens over the years including wildly overpriced ones that stops working good, cradles, or completely stops working in a 10th of the life of a Stanley FatMax. That’s a really nice greenhouse that I’d love to build for myself, however after living where we do in SE Texas for almost 35 years, we’re ready to seek out a larger track of land to build our retirement home and other structures verses putting more money into this place. Thanks and take care.

Thank you. We are working on our 5 year plan. We are building debt free, which makes it harder. Our KZfaq channel is helping, but dang, the price of lumber, windows, doors, etc is ridiculous. Still, I think it is worth it.

@@TonysTractorAdventure Your off to getting a good start which is more than I’ve been able to do, whereas last summer just as we’re were about ready to get some more land where we can stretch out more due to this area we’ve lived in SE Texas about 50 miles north of Houston has exploded with everything around us worth anything was sold at more than 2 or 3 times the normal property values. During that time I went to a cardiologist for medical clearance for a neck surgery I’m in bad need of, but was diagnosed with chronic heart disease and three major blockages in my heart as well as numerous blockages in both legs, so I’ve undergone having two stents placed in my heart and still working towards that medical clearance, so hopefully it’s soon. Meanwhile, I get some eye cataracts fixed! Isn’t it something that I worked very hard in my law enforcement career together with my family construction business, and the minute I decide to finally slow down and do all those personal things with getting our new place is when my body chooses to start falling apart. Nonetheless, I’m still in the game and will just haft to deal with it taking me a bit longer. Maybe, by then construction material prices will drop by then, so I can get our first project being a 40 x 50 post and beam shop for our larger scale woodworking machines, and space for all our company tools, etc. I hope you folks the best and stay safe while making your dream of being totally debt free in 5 years which is a great goal, whereas I’ll be taking the sales money from my current homestead to roll into our new place, possibly together with some savings if prices doesn’t start dropping which I’m not going to hold my breath. Sorry for being so long winded, I’m a proud new subscriber to your channel and I’ll be watching for your upcoming videos. Have a great day.

Still working on getting all the lumber milled (our big mill got taken out by the derecho that came through a few months ago) so I’m left with a jerry rigged mill using an old chainsaw fitted between 2 steel rails. I’ll be watching this vid over and over again in the coming months.

What an impressive project!! Something to file away for my future dream farm, for sure. My husband recently build me something similar, on a smaller scale (about 7m x 2.8m). We have two automatic roof vents, a front door that we usually leave open, and a large window at the opposite end. The only issue we've had so far is over-heating. We're looking for solutions for additional venting/windows, as it has been too hot inside the greenhouse this first summer to leave any seedlings in it during the day. We thought about slinging a shade cloth inside it, but it has been a very overcast summer, and we already have issues with seedlings getting leggy as they seek more sunlight...so that doesn't seem to be a feasible solution. We're hoping to install at least two sets of louvres or vents on either side of the greenhouse, and also a third roof vent. We'd also like to capture the rainwater that currently runs off the roof onto the ground, and store it for watering the gardens. I didn't see any vents or windows on your finished build - I wonder if you're planning on adding some at a later stage?

I don't know if you're joking or not, This is definitely not a safety Sam channel. I see people get completely bent out of shape over chainsaw safety, and then jump in their car and run down the road at 80 mph in a tin can. All without understanding the people coming at them have metal belts showing through their tires. Walk around the Walmart parking lot and look at the front tires. If you put as much emphasis on the safety of driving as you do your chainsaw safety, then you can never drive again.

@@TonysTractorAdventure I’ll have to source lumber. I also have seen U of M Extension has a deep winter greenhouse that’s scalable towards the needs of the home/farm. It’s quite incredible of a design with tons of research being done and picking up in popularity for us northfolk.

Watch for condensation on inside of panels. The water will run down to the bottom edge inside of greenhouse and land on any lumber there. I think you only have lumber on the outside of the panels, which will be better.

Great video. One advanced idea you might want to look into is a ground to air heat transfer system which might be what you referenced at the very end of the video. Your soil looks perfect for it. Although might be hard now that the end of the greenhouse is installed as you would definitely want to use the tractor for it. My current greenhouse setup uses 2 wax powered cylinder automatic vents, a manual hatch vent, and the door. You'll have them all full open in the summer and may need a fan on a thermostat as well. Ventilation is critical to prevent mold and fungus and obviously temperature control. I also have a raspberry pi controlling an auto watering system using 3 multiple zoned moisture probes, 2 55 gallon trashcans as reservoirs, and 3 pumps run off a relay circuit. Great if you ever want to travel and not kill your precious tomatoes! I look forward to watching what you come up with next, especially the water system and the solar install. Thanks for making videos!

The result looks definitely great, thank you for sharing! :-) I got a very good great idea from this video - using butyl tape for making greenhouse tight. Thumbs up and enjoy your greenhouse! From my experience in my cool humid climate, there are few of things you probably should watch. - First would be the ventilation in the summer - there is never enough of that (many common vegetables go into stress and/or their flowers loose fertility over +30 C). Ventilation holes/sections probably on two ends and possibly a summer door with mesh would do well. - IMHO you did not seal the ends of polycarbonate panels - there will be condensation inside those panels and in few years also green algae (don't ask how I know ;-) ) I used suitable silicone to seal upper open ends (although aluminium tape or something that would be fine, too) and installed "breathing" tape to the bottom open ends of panels and that has been completely fine in ~5 years. Btw - insulation R-value corresponds to case of closed ends of polycarbonate panel. - If you should have a windy area, you may encounter issues of strong winds blowing wall panels either in or off. From video it looked like you have 1/4" (6mm) polycarbonate panels - they would love some support between posts. I'd add X-bars between posts. - If you should be interested in extending growing season or do better with heating, you can fasten a sheet plastic (for cold/cool periods) to roof support structures - that will be a dramatic difference from R-value point of view

It was good to see Tanja talk and I applaud her bravery being on top of the roof. I’m glad she was the first one to walk through the doors of her new greenhouse. It is always wonderful to see the Gizmo dog and kudos to your friend who helped you. I know I don’t comment a lot but rest assured that I watch all your videos.
