Back around 1960 I used to take the bus along Metropolitan Ave and then up Manhattan Ave to go to the dentist. When the bus crossed over Newtown Creek I would have to hold my breath so I wouldn't get sick to my stomach. It's improved 1000% since then. Now I walk the nature trail along the creek. Sometimes change can be for the better. Thanks for the tour!

My mom’s uncle was a dentist on Manhattan Ave, near Metropolitan - Dr. James Delio. And, yes, Newtown Creek was an olfactory nightmare!

I feel like I should’ve paid for this. It feels like an episode from an educational tv series, the editing and camera work is next level, and I learned so much about my own Borough just now.

Greenpoint turned into a predominately Polish community during the late 70s. (the Lech Walesa movement in Poland). Before that Greenpoint was a mixed community of all European backgrounds. The north side of Greenpoint (wooden frame buildings) was a largely a Hispanic community. The Pulaski Bridge replaced the old Greenpoint Bridge (where the trolley ran into Long Island City) that lead into Long Island City on the Queens side. I'm from Long Island City & I used to travel to Greenpoint on personal field trips.

I was baptized in St. Anthony's Church. My first savings account was in the Greenpoint Savings Bank, a glorious interior. I spent my early childhood in McGolrick Park and sat on the Monitor statue's head many times, when a kid could still climb it, prior to the fence. Great video !

McGolrick Park used to be called "Winthrop Park". It was re-named McGolrick Park in 1941 but we always called it Winthrop Park up until the '70's when we moved upstate. Lived on Monitor Street. There was a scene in the last episode of the Showtime show "Ray Donovan that was shot in Greenpoint on Monitor Street near the B-Q-E.

This was fascinating, thank you. I stayed in Greenpoint opposite St. Anthony of Padua Church in Spring 2018 and loved wandering around this neighbourhood. Had a pizza at Paulie Gee's, Polish food at Christina's and beer at the Brooklyn and Greenpoint breweries, plus great views over to Manhattan from the waterfront. Really interesting insight into the area and its history.

Crying over childhood in the park and pronouncing Beaux-arts awkwardly totally made my day! Excellent videos, thanks! Edit: I was always curious about what borough and part of the city you like the most, and now I know it's probably Greenpoint. Wow, what else we don't know, even acting in a series? It was good to see how much you love the place where you grew up!

Glad this popped up in my feed, lived here for two years and this was very informative. But one thing you didn't mention is that Greenpoint Ave was previously named Lincoln Street with the rest of the alphabet streets and technical the last alphabet street is Quay not oak. Calyer being the one street that broke the rule which should have started with a P.

So how do locals feel about very sincere outsiders moving in? The kind of person that would be a good citizen, help fight for what is right in your local area, neighbor...etc. An Ambassador to the community. (Is it easy to get involved even as an outsider?) *Im an artist from Hawaii, living in vermont and I have always wanted to visit NYC, finally went and fell in love.
