I have an entire playlist in my channel titled "GreenStalk Vertical planter" with videos on how to make your DIY soil mix for the GreenStalk, how to build trellising for it, DIY watering system etc, and also tours of the GreenStalks that I filmed at different times of the year! Be sure to check it out! If the link below does not work, you can find it in the Playlists tab on my Channel! I'm imagining a vintage radio drama called "The Green Stalker!" Criminals everywhere tremble at the sound of the name. He comes out of the shadows, silent, deadly, and horribly green! In an instant, an evil-doer can find himself dropping into the river with concrete swimfins or dangling from a lamppost with a hemp necktie.

Im setting up my first greenstalk and found out that it's easier on your back to place the first tray empty on the base with a painter's tape covering the hole. Fill it, plant, water to settle the soil, remove the tape, place the water saucer, and stack the next one empty and repeat until you have your tower set up. That way you are not lifting 1cft every level.

I stack all of mine in place, empty. Stack one, plug center watering hole while adding soil and make sure to fill to the top. Add starts before adding next tier. Seeds you can plant at anytime but easier to plant starts once the soil is in and before stacking next level.

I'm elderly and I stack an empty one on top and then fill it and plant it. Once they are filled with soil I can't lift it so this way works for me. I also buy 2 larger levels (original) and 2 smaller (leaf) and create a stack of 4. The 5-7 layers are too tall for me to water and with our storms and wind it's just asking to be blown over if it's that tall.

1. Add perlite to the potting mix 2. Use a good quality potting mix 3. Fill each level of the stacker before stacking; adds stability as you build 4. Make a depression with the water disc and leave a small amount of space between the soil and the disc so the water can flow better 5. Plant before you stack 6. Plant at an angle 7. Water each pocket when you initially plant and eventually from the top reservoir; watch pockets to ensure they're moist 8. Use a liquid fertilizer 9. Get assistance when moving the Greenstalk (heavy when filled and watered) 10. Fill 1/2 way when fertilizer to slow down waste of fertilizer then do a second 1/2 a little later

For seeds that don’t need light for germination, such as carrots, I have cut out pieces of cardboard to top each pocket. This will keep the soil consistently moist, and rarely do I need to add more water until I take them off. Check them regularly and remove the cardboard once seeds germinate.

You are adorable! Nice presentation. 👍🏻 For me, the set-up is easier if I fill each tray about 1/2 full and then place that tray on top of the lower level. It’s lighter and easier to handle. Once I’ve set-up the entire planter, I add another small bit of potting mix into each pocket as I’m planting (the mix seems to settle quite a bit once I water it). My strawberries over-wintered beautifully in my Greenstalk! The berries are safer from predators and are easy for me to pick. Same for salad greensM Love that twirling wheeled base. Rotate every few days so all plants get equal sun. You are a bit of Sunshine yourself! Enjoy your harvest!

😂You are sooo right about the nasturtiums - they have taken over the top of my greenstalk and are now cascading down into my upward growing tomatoes. Oh, one tip I saw on another video was using that small black plastic cap that comes with the greenstalk on the center water channel while you’re putting the potting mixture into the trays helps to keep the mixture out of the watering system. One tip I personally learned was that slowing down the rate of water going into the top saucer (putting the hose on a slow but steady rate) actually worked far better than shooting water into the saucer to reach that top line. You do a version of that with only filling it halfway, then coming back a while later. Your greenstalks look great!

I didn't get any black plastic caps either but I have plastic shot glasses at the dollar store and use those to cover the hole while filling the tiers.
@ccaswick
@ccaswick 3 ай бұрын
Get some kiddy pools at the dollar store for amending your soil, way less mess than just a tarp -- plus nice foot soak on hot days throughout the summer. I plant herbs and greens nearer to the top and things that need staking below that and on the bottom tier I plant marigolds to help keep pests at bay. Peas and beans have done the best for me and herbs. I use dowels for staking with some garden tie that is thin plastic on a roll that rips when you pull it hard. I fertilize with the green powdered stuff you add to water every 3-ish weeks once plants are on their way. I have spinners (no wheels) and turn my towers every couple days to keep the sun on everything. Rinse everything every year when you empty/refill -- make sure none of the drainage holes are blocked and be careful filling so that nothing goes down the middle hole (or cover it with a cup or plastic wrap). Enjoy/have fun.

I just found your channel and subscribed. I bought my Greenstalks this year (4 of them). I chose these because my yard is not conducive to direct planting (4 inches down and I hit rock). Enjoyed your content! I use a small piece of blue painters tape to plug the watering hole until I add the next level. As I fill each level with mix and before adding the next level I use a hand held shower wand to gently pre moisten that levels mix. If all of the mix isn't moist before the first top water, the water from top won't go laterally and will continue straight down and out the bottom. That way you are only lifting lite, dry mix when assembling. Also...make sure there isn't any mix that gets into the grey watering discs before adding the next layer as these small floaters will start plugging the holes. As for the sunflower keeping plants that are trying to grow around them from doing well, it is most likely that the large, fine, root system of the sunflower out grows and out competes with available water and soil resources...it's just a better competitive 'weed'. Happy Gardening.

From what I understand, sunflowers actually attract pests that would otherwise attack your others. Usually, they're planted far away from the rest of the garden, but you'll find out whether interplanting will work! I thank you SO much for your comprehensive tips! I never heard of GreenStalk until I saw this video. I've been trying to figure out how I was going to plant everything we want to plant in the small space we have that needs to be enclosed because of deer, voles, and rabbits. There are only 2 of us, so we don't need a lot of anything in particular. Watching your video as the first has been a blessing. I don't know the cost, but the cost of outdoor/pest resistant wood is cost prohibitive. Cedar, Bubinga, Mahogany ... SO expensive. Now, I will look into these for my planters and save the expensive stuff for the enclosure. Thank you so much!

I bought my Green Stalk before they came out with the twisting base. So I plant lettuce and shade loving things in the back and sun lovers in the front. I love mint, but you have to contain it. It works well on the top tray so it won’t spread. It will eventually if is in a lower tray.

Thanks for sharing this. Green Stalk and other KZfaqrs should provide more tips for people. I think they are doing people a disservice by making it sound so easy. I’ve had mine for 2 years and have been frustrated. I always have trouble with getting the water to flow to the bottom tier even after changing out my potting soil to the premium Roots brand which is airy and light. I tried your phased watering approach yesterday and I think it helped. 🤞❤

Yeah that watering system is definitely good, and likely the best out there in the market,but still not great. One more thing to consider, I recently read somewhere that you actually want the soil touching the bottom of the gray disc, to promote capillary action. I mentioned this to a friend who was complaining that the water was just flowing through, and she tried it and said it made a huge difference... Just thought I'd share, in case you wanted to try. I plan to.

I have some suggestions. First you put old clotting at base of each pot to retain water. Second. At the top put 20 or 10 liter transparent gallan water ,you can see level of water easily, put holes to gallan and put ear bud to control flow of water. This will give more facility, we need to put water once in 7 days. Jay bharat.

I also want you to experiment. At the basement, you grow lotus flower. 🪷 fill the water at base level. You make clothing rope, you insert inside holes, you can make holes little larger as per as need. Water from basement will move upward through clothing rope. Once you fill water make it wet,after that clothing rope will keep it wet. You must experiment. Water from below will go up,very useful in case if you are traveling abord, plant won't dry. You can grow azola or other water plant . Jay bharat.

Couple of things to try (1) yes, your soil might be hydrophobic esp if it has a lot of content like peat. It is practically impossible to get it wet from top watering once it reaches that point, and You will have to water each pocket and agitatebthe soil a bit so it doesn't just flow through. (2) Make sure that your tiers are filled to the brim with soil, tamp down a little so you can get more soil in. I find that the drip mechanism between the tiers is insufficient. You actually need the soil touching the upper tier to trigger capillary action as well. Hope this helps.

Greenstalk doesn't explain this and you didn't either. How can you fill the top watering saucer when there is a hole and the water runs out of that and doesn't stay in the saucer to drip out? My greenstalk develops a pond on the patio floor when I try to fill that top saucer. Why doesn't it run through that hole for you, but it does for me?
@GreenLove1
@GreenLove1 Ай бұрын
The water runs through the hole and fills up the grey saucers in each tray before coming out through the bottom. There are 3 situations that I can think of that causes the water to pool at the bottom. 1. Your soil may be hydrophobic in places and not absorbing water fast enough - so water finds the quickest path which is down thru the hole instead of wetting the soil 2. You are sending the water thru too fast, so it seems like it is all flowing out from the bottom, even though it is filling that saucers too. Slow down the speed of fill, and do it in a couple of stages at least the first few times. 3. You put too much water...the excess comes out through the bottom. Hope this helps. The watering system is not perfect, and does require skill on the part of the user too. But it's the best vertical planter watering system that I know of in the market today! Also, once I installed the automatic watering (I DIY'ed it!) most of my watering issues went away!
