This is the ninth in our series of videos about the Energy Retrofit of the old fibro cottage next to the Greeny Flat. In this episode we go into greater detail about how Passive Solar Design works, how it is applied in a new building like the Greeny Flat and how it can be used to improve the energy performance of an existing building. Specifically we look at what is a Trombe Wall and how we are retrofitting one into the old cottage.

You should also mention you are situated in the Southern hemisphere, hence the north aspect.

Fantastic idea! I've got a large brick fireplace between two rooms in my old cottage. I was thinking of removing it but I might see if I can use it's thermal mass in a creating way like this. Thanks for sharing.

excellent explanation. It would be good if you were able to measure the contribution from the trombe wall.

Hi Andy great explanation. Would I be right In assuming It’d take a fair bit of solar energy collection in the Slab on ground construction to offset the embodied energy in the Slab construction however? Even in dollar terms, in the timber framed floor your be able to run a night time heating system for quite a while before paying out the same as the cost of pouring a large slab, perhaps? I guess this is particularly so when building on slopes where the cost of excavating to level and filling deeper with concrete grows quickly. Thanks for the great explanation 😊

but why place the wall if we can use the floor? we want daylight, right?

Wouldn’t it need southern access to the sun?

He lives on the southern hemisphere, so for him the north side is the optimal side
