We have been doing the same thing for 3 years now it works very well so I think we’ll have to go to 45 days to be able to keep keeping all our heifers

I’ve been following you a long time! Always wondered why you calved for so long. We only do a 45 day breeding season. I think you’re going to love it once you get past the initial culling that happens the first couple of years. I’m sure with your reputation you won’t have any issues selling those fall calvers at a premium, and it’ll move your best genetics forward. Very smart move Mr Judy! Enjoy your content.

Doesn't that favor the cows with better genetics as far as reproduction? Since they didn't take early on when you put the bulls in. IIRC that is a big point that Jim Elizondo and Johann push.

Thanks for the video! This will be nice to have them calf in a smaller window and you will know which animals that will have better fertility too.

You are changing your practice so your best bulls are only breeding the cow heard for 60 days so that the calves are born only in April and May to improve cattle drive effeciency, Is this correct ???? Love your videos and appreciate all you do.

Yes, Greg, seasons are defined by the relative position of the Earth and Sun, not by the past couple of days weather.

What percentage of your herd calve in the fall currently? That could be a big herd reduction… but they say it’s harder and more expensive to get the last 20% of your herd to calve in sync with the 80% that are doing what you want. In nature, they don’t take out the bulls, so a long time ago the fall calving cows were naturally selected by the “wolves” . God, the herd manager of the wild animals doesn’t have bills to pay, just an ecosystem to keep running! You are doing great work, by adapting to your own ecosystem.

I've recently seen many babies on the neighbors farms laying in the dirt.I was thinking, that sure is stupid. Luckily for them it's been a mild winter so far.

Q: Kinda wonder why you haven't done this sooner? A: Because "that's the way we've always done it" 😅 It's gonna be great! Koodos to Isaac for his part in this and to you for trying something a young whipper-snapper suggested. 👍

Greg has always been open to inputs from his interns. You can always crop easily get locked in yours ways and may never ever get that Eurek🎉 moment that comes from someone else’s perspective. In effect you culture continuous improvement that does just that, improvement. I have found from watching Greg’s videos over the years good ideas some of which came from an inters idea. Some are very simple but significant like setting temp posts at an angle to keep the wire low and not being pulled out by upward tension when fencing in a ditch or depression in the layout of your paddock.

If you want to know which cattle are serviced vs which are not, tail paint before you put the bulls into the group. The green MarkHer tail paint stayed on best. You could do a weigh-in day and tail paint at the same time. We frequently touched up spray-on paint in our dairy herd. It rubs off when the female is mounted during estrus.

I try to have 45 day breeding plan, and anything later I cull. Mainly because if 80% of the cows can breed back 85-120 days from calving, the ones taking longer are not my high fertility cows and I don't want those lower fertility cows in the herd. I managed this even when I ai'ed all my cows (but I've never had more than 50 :) ). One year I had the cows all calve in 10 days - that was a great calving year 😁

Hello mister judy, i have a question for u. If you where to put the bulls in for 60 days during the summer of 2024 like you did in 2023 and you dont put the bulls in december this year, wouldn’t that make the fall cows become spring calving cows? Only skipping a year with now calfs for some cows? Greetings for from the netherlands

Good morning, Greg and Judy, and Happy New Year's! It seems that you made this video around Thanksgiving 2023, but you uploaded it in January of 2024 so when you say that you are going to sell the Fall calving cows "next year," are you talking about 2024 or 2025? Also, would Fall calving cows be a good fit farther south? Loved the video.

They will be sold in June-July 2024. There are a lot of people that prefer fall calving over spring calving. That’s a whole video that I need to do explaining the advantages of each fall and spring calving.

How far apart do you keep the bulls from the cows? I would imagine they would go through the wire to get to the cows.

Would you raise White Park cattle, if you did not raise South Poll cattle?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 5 ай бұрын
White Park breed is fine, just try to get the moderate frame ones. If you sell them at the sale barn, you may get docked because they don’t match with anything else there.

Greg don’t you worry about line breeding? Turning all the cows in with the bulls couldn’t some moms get bred by their son, etc.?
@charleswalters5284
@charleswalters5284 4 ай бұрын
The odds of any particular cow breeding with her son is over eight hundred to one,(assuming three quarters of the bulls are banded, which also means that three quarters of the cows don't even have a son in the herd), and any unhealthy ones are culled,so it's not an actual problem
