Greg discusses his strategy for first winter stockpile grazing pass. Be very careful on your first winter grazing pass with your livestock to ensure that they do not take over 50% of forage. This ensures that you will have a second grazing pass later in the winter after the pasture has been rested and cleaned by nature.

@@gregjudyregenerativerancher Ha, you're most welcome. I don't think I could ever fully repay you for all the patience, help and advice you've given to me over the years but I'll sure try. The sheep and the dogs are doing great. They're one of the great loves of my life. No matter how bad a day gets, I always look forward to going and working with them and getting a breather from everything else. My cattle are doing great as well, I wish I'd have been able to get them from you but I'll try to check that item off my wish list here in the coming years.

Our sheep do quite well on Kentucky 31 stockpiled fescue during the winter. Sheep flock do not get any hay all winter. Tried giving them a bale last winter in a snow storm, they refused to eat it, foraged for their food instead.

That's a beautiful pond you've got going there. You've shown us a "textbook example" of how it might be done. I'm wondering how many acres of pasture it'll be supplying? It looks like there will be just one watering station by gravity. Is there another downhill spot for another tank? Thanks

Capture the water on your land while it is still legal to do so, period. If you run out of water and the water company tells you to not water livestock with their water in severe droughts, your out of business.

@Digger927
@Digger927 3 жыл бұрын
He said in freezing weather they empty the tank and take it to the house and bring it back in the morning. Cattle drinking from it through the day usually provides enough flow to keep it liquid.

@@Digger927 So they use it above freezing temps? I heard it but I wasn't clear.
@Digger927
@Digger927 3 жыл бұрын
@@kiddfamilyfarmllc9962 No, he said in freezing weather they go down to the smaller 50 gallon tank. They do that so it's less wasteful to dump it at night. In freezing temps, they drain it and take it in at night so it doesn't tempt the cattle to want to drink. Then they bring it back the next morning and refill it. The hose doesn't usually freeze because cattle drink from it enough in the daytime to keep it flowing enough to keep it from freezing. Water flow into the tank is much harder to freeze because the pond water is is at subterranean temps and flowing water is much harder to freeze up. We get fairly nice winters here in MO. Sub zero winters up north and that probably wouldn't work.

On the subject of not spraying fescue, take a look at some of Greg's other pastures: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hqt1ZsljksulcmQ.html It's a jungle of warm season grasses, legumes and other good stuff, then fescue will be there in the winter.
