Seriously guys, don't you feel like crying out of joy when watching this?? This is pure gold, he's a magician that uses notes instead of cards.

The phrasing really is first class, this guy is so underrated!

Greg impresses even himself on this haha. You can see the smiles from time to time when plays a really crazy line like "hell yeah, can't believe I pulled that one off"
@proteoid14 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I can't believe that somebody can jam continuously for 4 minutes and not repeat a single lick - AND still make it sound so awesome !
@jasonDSGPerformance10 жыл бұрын
Reading below, it's always shocking to me how people don't know Greg Howe. He's been around since the original late 80's Shrapnel era guitar virtuoso's. Truly one of the all-time greatest IMO, Introspection album is a masterpiece

my guitar teacher when I was a kid would always talk about how great greg howe was and that he was underrated. I get it. There's more flavor in his playing than alot of the big name guitar soloists you think of

I think Ive watched this about 20 times now ! I think its one of the best guitar vids on youtube. So tasteful and melodic, yet technically frightening! It also takes a true genius to jam for 4 minutes and not repeat a lick. Incredible.

the first time i heard Greg improvise, it felt so refreshing but somehow familiar like if i already heard 'the song' when i was a kid. now i realize that he just plays what i wanted to hear the most all my life... 5 years later i still come back to this video as a huge source of inspiration and feeling.

Greg: I actually knew and worked with Bobby Hebb and I will tell you that you play Sunny to perfection. I know that Bobby would have been pleased with what you did as I am. You see Bobby and I worked for The Massachusetts Highway Department In Boston and he was always cool and I mean it. When Bobby Hebb died in 2010 The Massachusetts Highway Department lost more than a man we lost a legend as well. Steven M. Fanale

I don't understand how this video got any thumbs down at all! there are obviously over 100 viewers out of almost 2 million that are complete downer, know-it-all, douschebags that think they have a "real" sense of music and understanding of master improvisational work. I would like to see just one song in the world played by a solo guitarist that easily pleases everybody... This one is pretty darn close!

Yer sir! With John Scofeid (guitar), Joey Defranceso (Hammond and Bass - yes, at the same time, like Ray Manzerek on steroids:)) and Byron Landham (drums). Awesome version. But I also love Greg's approach. You know, there is an awesome guitar virtuoso by the name of Guthrie Govan who, I believe, and please correct me if I'm wrong, was inspired by Greg's technique. Check him out. Nonetheless, I love this version and thanks to the person that posted this.... a belated thanks at that:)
@megajames30008 жыл бұрын
Saki Kaskas oh yeah this is serious too. That video is amazing. Guthrie is amazing also. His technique is insane
@RenanBeltrao8 жыл бұрын
is it possible to describe what scales is he using? I can identify Cmaj (I think), but there is so many crazy notes (that souns spetacularly cool). WTF is happening there?
@jasonedwards62148 жыл бұрын
+Renan Beltrão hey ren, there's a guitar transcription which also includes the tab form as well from hal publishing. try ya luck there!
@jagheterjonteh8 жыл бұрын
He is using modal scales (different modes of Ionian scale).
@jaconova8 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can always kind of point what scale he is using per chord. But I suggest to try thinking and playing in smaller chunks of information (ie: intervals, triads, quatriads), instead of scales. For example during a G7, you might play something based on G major triad plus a b9: if you go the scale route you will see this might come from many scales: altered, diminished, phrygian dominant, etc. Interesting, but confusing and not practical for playing in real time! There are no really shortcuts for fussion and jazz, but thinking in smaller units instead of 7-8 note scales (usually spanned for two and a half octaves) is much more easy to grasp, especially if you just started learning fussion/jazz.
@nihilanthropus6 жыл бұрын
Renan Beltrão it's all A minor pentatonic
@medelalmi6 жыл бұрын
someone plz correct me if I'm wrong : I think he uses also notes from the chromatic scale in his soloing (like guthrie govan or more precisely guthrie who does it the greg howe way)

one of very few guitarists who might actually be better than Guthrie.
@paulsoneliancy93907 жыл бұрын
Wow!! Why do you say that? I actually try hard not to compare them
@Cheximus7 жыл бұрын
lmfao he's not even close. Alex Hutchings over this guy too.
@faggotsmoker95887 жыл бұрын
I found his playing less boring compared to those two.
@dextershumba72627 жыл бұрын
He's actually one of guthrie's influences, not sure if he's better than guthrie though...you definitely hear a lot of howe's style of shred in guthrie's lines...but guthrie is a machine, he was manufactured in a HYDRA lab
@RorysIrishTour7 жыл бұрын
greg is more interesting and creative in his playing, his phrasing is a milestone. govan has some serious chops though, but is clearly influecend from howe in his lead playing. greg had his style 25 years before guthries first release. hutchings can fuck off, no contest.
@tubalix7 жыл бұрын
dislikes = people who either play shit themselves and can't stand Greg's genius or simply don't understand anything about music which would explain why they play like shit in the first place. Greg's playing is absolutely brilliant!
