For decades, Gregory Scarpa worked as a secret informant for the FBI, and the agents who supervised him eventually became his associates and helped him avoid prison and conduct illegal business.
His informant status also helped Scarpa move within the Colombo Mafia family, of which he was a member. He was very selective in leaking information and distorting facts to eliminate those who hindered him and to increase his power systematically. Some even believe that Scarpa was the gray cardinal of the family, pulling the strings and controlling from behind the scenes.
He started wars, killed and ordered the deaths of people by the dozens, turned his son into a killer, officially allowed his wife to have a lover, and then also turned him into a killer. And, even when nearing the end of his life when he turned into a walking skeleton due to advancing AIDS, he still rode around the city and shot his enemies.
