The Hammer and Jesse Ventura were both heels in the WWF during the 1980s. Valentine tells us while Ventura was a good wrestler, he was an exceptional announcer for the World Wrestling Federation.
You may remember Jesse being teamed up with Gorilla Monsoon, Vince McMahon, Tony Schiavone and others. Hammer also mentions Lord Alfred Hayes and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan as being some of the best in the game.

Count me as another one who is happening to love watching these Hammer shoots. He is really engaging and kind; down to earth he seems to me. I'm 35 so the matches I seem to remember watching were with him wrestling lesser talents on the lower card; not the matches he had with Santana over the IC title or the matches with Flair and Piper etc.

as a heel announcer jesse was ridiculously over. i remember a summerslam in new jersey 88 or 89 around there.... as soon as it was obvious to everyone that the ppv went live a guy a few rows behind me with a booming voice started chanting jesse! jesse! then i started... so i was number 2 in the whole arena.. at the 5th jesse the entire arena exploded (or popped is the current vernacular) chanting jesse. his reaction to it was priceless.

Jesse is either the best or second best announcer I've heard in my over 60 years of being a wrestling fan and listening to ALL the territory announcers (thanks to KZfaq). The guy who ranks right there with him is Dick Lane an bad-guy actor who called wrestling at Los Angeles' Olympic Auditorium for quite a few years in the 1960's and 1970's. Lane was born in 1899 and had an old-school gangster vibe, just right for wrestling in the kayfabe days. Lane loved every baby face and spoke his mind to the heels. For whatever reason, the old Los Angeles territory gets very little publicity today even though it where vaudeville wrestling really got its start with the appearance of Gorgeous George.

Very underrated duo. Ventura and McMahon played so well off each other, with McMahon doing the slightly naive, straight shooter, good guy play-by-play routine and Ventura doing the cagey veteran, experienced wrestler, bad guy color man routine. McMahon's exasperation with Ventura was never not funny.

Imagine of raw and SmackDown today had announcers like Ventura and McMahon on one show and Gorilla and Heenan on the other. I will watch the show just for the commentary alone. That would be entertaining enough for me. What I liked about it was they weren’t trying to be “ESPN” like they were trying to be part of the package part of the story and the voice of the spectator. It added another dimension to every match. It’s a lost art now for the most part.

I hope guys like Greg realize just how much they meant to kids in the Midwest in the early to mid 80s. Where I lived , it was WWF and NWA (WCW) on TV and I gotta say it was must see TV to a lot of us. I loved all the major pro sports in the 80s . Larry Bird, Mike Schmidt , Pete Johnson - they were posters on my wall. And right there alongside them were JYD , Superstar Billy Graham, Greg the Hammer etc. Those guys were as important to me as any of my heroes in regular sports. They really made my childhood memorable and I love the nostalgic feeling I get from watching them reminisce about those days. To me they're legends

Great point by Valentine about the appeal of Jesse as an announcer. He was a heel and he was biased toward the heels, but he always made good points. It was like he was the heels' lawyer. You could rarely argue with what he was saying, even if you didn't like what he was saying.

Jesse really was the original heel commentator. Pretty much every one before hand (unless it was a heel doing guest commentary) was always for the face wrestlers, the non-rule breakers, the fan favorites. Vince McMahon having Jesse continue his heel persona on the microphone as an announcer was one of the genius things Vince McMahon did to help build the wrestling business into the multi million dollar industry it is today. Technically, he was the prototype for all heel announcers.

Ventura was hands down the greatest heel announcer of all time. He was great at building up the heel as an announcer, but particularly as an interviewer. If a heel did something dastardly to the face, Ventura would really embellish it as a brilliant idea. Or if the heel had certain attributes like being a tough guy or a powerhouse, Jesse would make them out to be twice the man they really were. And he would sprinkle in just enough compliments to the babyface to keep some credibility. The '87 Survivor Series match when Bundy pulls Hogan from out of the ring causing Hogan to be counted out. Jesse timed it perfectly by saying 'what a smart move by Bundy!' because it was. But it didn't diminish Hogan because Bundy made a cheap, but smart move that anybody could have fell for, it just took a heel like Bundy to take a shortcut like that.

I loved jesse ventura as announcer. I started watching before this, but he was a voice behind so many of iconic matches, and heel or not, it felt just right hearing those two bitch. Jesse is a human being that really put himself into life with honesty and his own integrity, but before that ever mattered to me, he was a voice that had its own thing to say about...anything, and nobody had to agree and that was part of it.
