Gregg Wallace sets out to solve a long-standing family mystery: what happened to his great-grandfather, Henry Roland Springett, who abandoned his wife and children, including Gregg's grandfather, and was thought to have deserted the navy? Gregg turns detective and follows the clues that enable him to piece together Henry's life. Gregg uncovers a tale of infidelity, heartbreaking tragedy and cruel fate.
Gregg is also given an intriguingly formal portrait of his great-great-grandmother. On the trail of her story, Gregg is shocked to discover the origin of the portrait and to find out where she ended her days. The tales of catastrophe and misfortune that he uncovers leave Gregg reeling emotionally.

It occurs to me that his uncontrolable sorrow might in part be due to the remenent essence still floating around of other suffering lost souls of that assylum. 🥺

Do remember 1800s mental was disregarded. Even today, people subject people and dont much care about actual people. Mostly this is to do with disconnection, a apathetic society, bystanders, lack of treatment and understanding. Even people with physical issues were seen as a burden, thrown in the woods and left there. It's better now and thank god it is for this country to realise that, but mental health? I would like tl think my autism is mental but a spectrum. I'm in a better position but socially? People are just suspicious, subjegating tribal and unhinged status or ideological with the intuitions held. Perhaps even today as it cements. I hope one day that sociaty will know that people are valued more so then money, status, power, career base. What people don't understand about mental health is not just internal its external, imagine the 1800s? Quite horrific time with normal sane good people. But as the internet and social media of 2016-2020 you seen pretty much evidence of generalisation of social media that can course mental health. So, it's very important that we are social animals that need that connection, but yet how social people interact with others in response can effect people.

So I’ll make the uncomfortable observation that both the woman and her brother were genetically impaired.

More than likely poisoned by something in their environment. The Industrial Revolution resulted in a lot of pollution which would’ve affected some more than others. Such poisoning, e.g. mercury poisoning, is passed on from mother to child too which might give the unenlightened the impression that it’s genetic when it isn’t.
