LYRICS
When I was younger,
my daddy told me I would never
Never amount to nothing special.
He’d come at me from every angle, he’d say..
You’re the last thing I wanted,
the last thing I need,
how am I going to answer when my friends tell me
My son, was kissing boys in the street
He’d try to change me,
say I’m embarrassing my country,
How could I do this to my family,
do I wanna grow up being lonely,
he’d say We have worked for our money,
we’ve put you in school,
is this how you repay us,
do you think this is cool
My son, stop kissing boys in the street
Now that I’m older,
my daddy’s hearts a little warmer
But he still won’t hug me like my brother,
and he still won’t kiss me like my mother,
he’d say… You are part of this family,
I made you myself,
but the way that you act isn’t good for your health,
My son, stop kissing boys in the street
My daddy’s dying, but he's finally realized I’m not lying
We sit in silence but we’re smiling,
because for once we are not fighting,
he’d say… There was no way of knowing,
cos all I was taught is men only love women,
but now I’m not sure
My son, keep kissing boys in the street
My son, keep kissing boys in the street
When I’m gone, keep kissing boys in the street

This is actually a happy song if you think about it because the father accepted his son in the end. The sad part is thinking about how many fathers do not accept their sons even just before their deaths...

Damn Fine It's so true, this song really touches me despite the fact that both my parents were actually relieved when I came out (I was 16) - especially my mum as she knew I was stressed about something at the time. She was just pleased I didn't have to be stressed about it anymore. She's the best mother anyone could have in my eyes x However, I have had girlfriends with families like this, and it's heart wrenching to see what they have to go through. I just hope more parents can accept their children earlier than the father in the song. All the time this father could have had with his son, wasted. Don't be left with regrets!

For an innocent young boy growing up in San Francisco during the 70s & 80s, I think I was forced to form my own opinions on homosexuality at a pivotal point in my life. I met great people that I had no idea were gay or lesbian until several months after becoming great friends. Primarily because I had no idea what gay or lesbian was. I then realized one of my most valuable life lessons, you like or dislike based on the individual, not their sexual orientation, political views, life status or any other socio/economic tag. I heard this song on my favorite SF radio station KFOG via the Internet yesterday and it immediately brought me back to that time. I had to share. Hope this helps one person be more accepting of being "different". Peace out.

My dad and I spent too much time not speaking when I first came out. I was about 15. I hated him, and didn’t want anything to do with him. Didn’t even want others to know I was his kid. I even changed my name legally because he named me after him when I was born. We were nothing alike. But then he was diagnosed with a fatal illness and we slowly rebuilt our relationship. He fought for years, bravely, until ultimately succumbing to his condition. We luckily got a chance to reconnect and establish a relationship before he died. He apologized for everything he put me through. I needed that. And now he’s gone :/ And the craziest part is I’m realizing I’m so much more like him than I ever thought I was. And I love it now. I definitely appreciate it a lot more than I used to. Just wish he was still here :/

KHS brought me here. So glad he did. This song touched me so much and I couldn't stop thinking about it all day. I am currently working on a short story about two boys who are in love. The father forbids it and kicks his son out. When he is dying in hospital the son is contacted and as soon as he arrives they start talking as if nothing happened. Then the boy brings up the relationship he had been in before. He tells them they are engaged. The father pulls him into an embrace and gives them his blessing. He dies in his son's arms. It's inspired from this song.

Regardless of your view on the subject matter, you must admit that this was an awesome and powerful song. The emotion, the writing and the fact you can feel decades of this man's torment and the pure happiness that he feels when his Father's acceptance is bestowed unto him, it all works to make this a great song.

I see everyone commenting "Kurt brought me here", and I used to think it was actually Kurt Hummel from Glee. then I thought "wait, he never sang this song in the show cause it wasn't realeased yet". but it could have worked too lol

I hope this song doesn't come from your own personal experience but, I'm sure it's from many you know. I saw it with a good friend I lost to AIDS. His mother couldn't stay and watch him die. She asked me to be there for him. There was no reason for her to ask. I wouldn't have thought of being anywhere else. I still miss him so. His mother passed away a year or so ago. Thank you for this beautiful song. It's brought tears to my eyes and sad memories back but, you've also touched my heart.

Kurt Brought me here. Finally ...a song covering current situations that aren't being talked about in music today. We hear about women, drugs, money, and love stories. Never do we hear stories of depression, or the struggle of coming out to your father like in this one. This is just outstanding.

You are good father. When I told my father. He said he would have preferred me being a murder than gay and it would have been better if I was died. I went to dark place in my life for a long time that I never dated a guy or had relationship or sex or anything "gay" for years because my own dad wanting me dead made me hate myself being gay. You know what you can fight with entire world but not your family. I still care about him he is my father and he is not a bad men or never was a bad father. He was amazing person best dad anyone could ask during child, just that he don't like gay people. He haven't talked to him in years, just don't want to hurt him. But I miss those warm hugs he used to give or pet my shoulders before coming out. I miss him. Well he has 2 more perfect straight sons but I had just one father. I am not anger at him or hate him. How can I be, he is my father. Will always love him no matter what.

When I was younger My daddy told me I would never Never amount to nothing special He'd come at me from every angle He'd say: You're the last thing I wanted, the last thing I need How am I gonna answer when my friends tell me My son was kissing boys in the street? My son was kissing boys in the street?" He tried to change me Said I'm embarrassing my country How could I do this to my family? Do I wanna grow up being lonely? He'd say: We've worked for our money, we've put you in school Is this how you repay us? Do you think this is cool? My son, stop kissing boys in the street My son, stop kissing boys in the street Now that I'm older My daddy's heart's a little warmer But he still won't hold me like my brother And he still won't kiss me like my mother He said: You're a part of this family, I made you myself But the way that you act isn't good for your health My son, stop kissing boys in the street My son, stop kissing boys in the street My daddy's dying And he's finally realized I'm not lying We sit in silence but we're smiling Because for once we are not fighting He said: There was no way of knowing 'cause all I was taught Is men only love women, but now I'm not sure My son, keep kissing boys in the street My son, keep kissing boys in the street When I'm gone keep kissing boys in the street

I heard this song live for the first time before his new album came out and before I had even heard of him. It was an out of body experience. I constantly thought about this song for days after that. Nothing compares to hearing this man play live. Best opening act I'd ever encountered. Not quite sure how I feel about the video yet, but this song is powerfully beautiful. Keep it up, Greg.

My girlfriend just told me all the hateful things her Mom said to her today about our relationship. To sum up: her Mom doesnt believe in homosexuality or mental health issues. I just cried listening to this song. It's perfect. Homophobic parents do not know what they put us through. She is literally killing everything in her that is herself when she is in the house that is supposed to be her home. I am losing her. We both are too young for this. We are TEENAGERS. Stop hating on your kids. You kill them.
