This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Rene Descartes' work, The Meditations, specifically on meditation 3 and the argument for God's existence which he provides there. This argument does not neatly fit into the usual classification of ontological, cosmological, and teleological arguments, and turns on the origin of the idea Descartes has of God.

I'm starting my undergraduate studies on philosophy (and international relations) this October, and I feel like watching your videos on philosophy is gonna get me a sweet headstart. You succeed in delivering the juice of philosophy in a succinct manner, and using your videos after reading the text elucidates everything. Thank you for your efforts.

Hats off to you for attempting to explain the 3rd Meditation. I’ve read it all and only in reading it and doing the exercises along with him could I comprehend this concept. It’s so difficult to understand, so to explain it is that much more complicated

thank you so much. my university thought it would be a great idea to have us read all by ourselves without any guidance (not even notes from the professor) the meditations, a chunk of kants pure reason, naming and necessity and the conscious mind all for 3 measely credits. and the whole exam is basically "well you read all that, let's see how you will cope while our professors ask you detailed questions" i think its great that we're forced to read important works of philosophy, but i just think 3 credits is not enough for all that work and headache you get from kant

1/n approaches the limit infinity (or negative infinity if n is negative) as n approaches zero. So that is how one conceives infinity without being able to fully grasp infinity.

Descartes doesn't seem to have made diligent use of his own Method of Doubt in this case and seems to conclude rather hastily that God must exist because his idea exists.

@@GregoryBSadler Not really , I am saying the same thing as Bertrand Russel " The constructive part of Descartes’s theory of knowledge is less interesting than the earlier destructive part.". What do you mean " You'll need to reread more closely" ?

I have a serious recommendation. Add atmospheric (perhaps royalty free violin) music to your videos. I always listen to music when I watch you, and I think it might be something fun for you to experiment with.
