I appreciate the format. KZfaq will tell you anything over 5 minutes is a no-no. But a feature length video is mandatory to fully cover the intricacies. This channel is much needed.

I know that the best format in terms of revenue from ads is 5 mins or so, but I can't cover these topics in such short time spans, and I don't want to break up the videos into multiple parts, so 20-40 min videos will be the norm here.

Greg you kindly wrote me a note regarding the lack of sound. I am afraid I still have no sound on either IPad. My grandfather was shot on 20th June 1915 a true pioneer and I am very keen to hear what is no doubt an excellent commentary albeit about an aircraft that was far more advanced than his Gunbus. Also how about a video on rotary engine. They are fascinating.
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles 5 жыл бұрын
A rotary video is coming. I have to get over to the OKC kid's museum to make that video as they have the stuff I need to explain certain factors, including a rotary powered DR1. I'll re-record my early videos at some point, but try it on a desktop or laptop with speakers and a volume control, it does work.

In his book "Ace of the Iron Cross" Ernst Udet speaks about running his D7F at 1600 rpm when chasing an Se5a at low altitude. Does this mean he was going full throttle briefly to get some extra speed?
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles Жыл бұрын
Probably, it depends on his pitch attitude. Sometime when nose down you can get 1600 with the throttle back a bit.

Pity you missed Air Warrior, Greg, the first MMO and an extremely detailed air combat simulation based on the sort of primary source data you dearly adore. But, although it began with WWI aircraft its focus became WWII with 47 different types of fighters and bombers from the era, including bombers with players as bomber crew. It launched in '86 on the Mac II but added the Atari ST, Amiga and, eventually, the PC by 1990. By the time EA killed it in '01 it also featured fully texture mapped aircraft and world, no locked planes or leveling nonsense or cash shop. A different time.

@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles It was a bit more than that, Greg. To borrow from the title of the General's memoir, it was the first and the last. First large scale client/server online game before the term MMO was coined. And the last opportunity many people had to talk with pilot veterans of that war. Many spoke at our conventions. Yes, they were leery at first thinking AW players were video gamers. But, to their surprise, what they encountered were people similar to folks who enjoy your channel today. Sadly they're all but gone now. Some, like Bruce Carr who spoke at our '97 convention - flown to Kermit Weeks' FoF by Lee Lauderback in his TF-51D, Crazy Horse - passed away the following spring. He'd been on one of those misbegotten P-51 ground attack missions, was shot down in enemy territory and escaped by stealing an FW 190. But we who lovingly developed the game over many years knew it was going to be a narrow time window. The online gaming mass market was clearly going to go elsewhere once suitable computers and network connections became commonplace. Pardon the lengthy response 🙄

@@BlueBaron3339 I remember the '92 convention in DC, with the excursion to NASM and the Silver Springs facility, where the Seiran was the main restoration target at the time. When I first started playing SVGA Air Warrior, my connection to GEnie was so bad that a 'D' of 15 was _good_, and as a result, I became a buff driver -- the ground didn't move, so I could expect that where I was aiming was what my bombs would hit. When Air Warrior became accessible through internet connections, and I could go through my dialup Unix account, my connection got much better, but I still did better in bombers than I ever did in fighters.
@BlueBaron3339

@@DmdShiva Yes, the floatplane launched from an I-Boat. That Hurricane project was in an interesting phase as well. Plus, as is so often true of the sim-crowd, many of the attendees were pilots too and history nuts. I recall a Sean who went by the in-game name of Kite who flew a Great Lakes, would get lost occasionally, and zoom down to read road signs 😂 🤣 That fella knew *a lot* of aviation history too. Me, I stuck with old triple-tail Bellancas for travel, and Luscombes for fun. But I digress...
