Misspoke on the Type 97. The detonation mechanism was designed in 1914 and not 1931. 👍🏻

Wow. Given how much was learned during WW1 in terms of grenade manufacture, that makes it ancient. The Mk.2 'Pineapple' had it's mechanism designed in 1918, but it was a result of numerous corrections on the previous design. That is why it was far more reliable.

Very interesting and informative video! However, I would like to provide some info on the Type 23 grenades. While they were used by the Japanese in areas like the Pacific islands, they’re actually Chinese grenades that had been captured by the Japanese. It was adopted by the Chinese military in the 23rd year of the Republic, or 1934. Throughout the Second Sino Japanese War, Japan would capture and use large amounts of Chinese equipment, including these grenades. Although these weapons and equipment were for the most part used by Japanese troops in China, towards the end of the war, the type 23 grenades started to find their way to Japanese troops fighting in the pacific islands either due to the fact that production of Japanese grenades couldn’t keep up, or as a result of supply line disruptions. Often used as booby traps by the Japanese, their origins were initially a mystery to the American military and they will begin calling them either the Japanese Type 23 (due to the characters found on the lead cap) or the Japanese pull type grenade. Their initial designation continues to confuse collectors and historians today, hence why many people are unaware of its Chinese origins.

The Japanese lacked effective infantry weapons through the entire was. They hardly had any submachine guns and the majority relied on bolt action rifles which paired with poorly trained soldiers gave the individual soldiers a seemingly poor combat effectiveness near the end of the war. Maybe I'm missing something, but I think they would have been well suited to the Soviet approach of just pumping out millions of cheap, semi disposable sub machine guns
@onenote6619

I have seen that point made before and one the issues is that Japan was fighting across very long supply lines in the Pacific. Large numbers of bullet-hose weapons weapons would have been a problem, so instead the plan seems to have been to rely on fewer, more accurate shots. In the later stages of the war, sub-machine guns were designed and issued - because the firepower of every remaining soldier had to be maximised and supply lines were no longer extended.

Type 4 grenade, but the porcelain / terracotta has been designed to look like a vase typical of the time period. Not actually a grenade at all, but an art piece

In fact, they were made by the same potters who would later go on to create Japan's national treasures. Their vases and other items were priced enough to buy a small house.

It’s not ‘shrapnel’. A ‘shrapnel’ projectile* is a particular form of anti-personnel round similar to canister. An internal charge ejects metal balls out of the nose of the projectile in flight. The body of the round is not the main source of fragments. The word you’re looking for is ‘fragmentation’, * named after its inventor.

@@ThatZenoGuy actually a video about weapon technology is an entirely appropriate time to be pedantic about weapons terminology. And ‘shrapnel’ is one of those terms that separates those that know from those that don’t. I don’t really understand why you even intervened in the first place, as you’ve clearly demonstrated your propensity to double down on your ignorance. Best we leave it here before you embarrass yourself some more.
