Greta Thunberg mocks world leaders in 'blah, blah, blah' speech - BBC News

The Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, used her speech at the Youth4Climate conference in Milan to mock the words of world leaders, including UK PM Boris Johnson.
The 18-year-old used soundbites from Mr Johnson, such as "expensive bunny hugging" and "build back better", to highlight what she called the "empty words and promises" of politicians.
Later in the speech, she urged people not to give up hope, saying that change is "not only possible, but urgently necessary".
Many countries have announced ambitious targets to reduce their emissions to tackle climate change.
The UK, for example, has pledged to cut 78% of its emissions by 2035, from a 1990 baseline. But the government's current plans are projected to deliver less than a quarter of the cuts needed to meet the goal.

Right back at ya girl. All I hear from you is blah blah blah and statistic given by an adult, then more blah blah blah. By the way, while you are reciting blah blah blah why not thank the people that didn’t have time to contemplate climate change because they were fighting for your freedom, or the scientists that created all of the healthcare advances that give us a life expectancy close to 90-100 years instead of 30. How about a thank you to the docs that transplant organs and keep the recipients alive. There is a lot going on in the world Greta. Not everyone has time to focus on just one issue. You are a child and like most other children you are taken care of by parents that meet all of your needs, giving you time to write speeches that mock us. The next time you decide to mock someone try being more appreciative of the advances that made it possible for you to be alive long enough to make that speech, the technology to broadcast it and the freedom to speak to the world. None of that is free. Others paid and some with their own lives for you to be able to stand on that stage and mock us with your blah blah blah.

@@helenstockman3499 Truth! It's not even her message that people really have an issue with, it's her condescending and hateful attitude that make people not like her. She's 18 years old, what the fuck experiences has she had that makes her think she can talk down to everyone else? Aside from everything else, I couldn't care less about global warming. It's hard enough staying on top of basic necessities without having to prioritise the bullshit she wants us to put first in our lives. Sorry to day this, but she just needs to revise some parts of her speech to make everyone do their part to save the planet. From this video, she is more into "insulting" people of power through"forcing" them to save the planet when there are many issues to tackle. I'm not against her, as she indeed cares about our planet. Is just that, people wanted to be enlightened by public speaking. Her? A bit like trying to force them to save the planet when there are many things to do, such as about wars, pandemics, and etc.

I spent a lot of time on my craft and can cry and rant at will, which is quite difficult for the average child actress. How dare they criticize my acting skills when most have never acted professionally before. I get well paid for my role as Greta and I am worth all of the money I receive. I started my career at age 12 and am very skilled. I normally live in Sydney, Australia, so if you see me on the street there, please call me Estella and not Gretta, my character's name. And please stop spreading rumors that I am a bad actress. It's hurting my career. Thank-you. Show less

PRAY FOR THIS YOUNG LADY. THIS WOULD BLOW HER MIND. Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But too bad we didn't do the green thing back then. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then? Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart ass young person... We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to tick us off. John 3:16 KJV For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. we dont like her. Honesly, people who divide social and complex issues into "good" and "bad" people just make our job more difficult. She's not opening dialogue, she's just promoting hate againts big companies big countries. Yes the're's so many more than they can do. I would like for her to show a plan with the tremendous energy and spirit she has. Activism is great for as negotiation platform and emissions commitments, But in my early 10 years it takes a little more than that, and even with the companies trying to change is not technically easy. About the social injutice around the world, well that's moeny issue and it comes so ancient in time as Matusalem...

I am always surprised by Greta: She is amongst the few in this room that day who had grasped entirely the problem, its consequences and the required actions needed. Most of the attendants this particular day were here to protect their businesses. They consider that the required actions to tackled climate change would damage the economy, and therefore it is way better to continue as we have always done and wait for the environment to collapse first, dragging the whole economy down with it. That’s only common sense.
@friedsoybean

She has the guts to be fiercer than any other climate activists and comments here are mocking her instead. The solutions are available, hundreds of climate scientists already presented it, and yet got neglected under geopolitical interests for decades. She's voicing that out loud. She's using her youth as a resource, if one of those leaders could at least feel ashamed of being mocked by a young girl and take action even just a little, then it works. Majority of soccer fans freely cheer and criticize, players despite having no professional soccer career, although the outcome of a match has no effect on their daily life. Now a teenager can't speak her mind even though it will actually affect many people's livelihood.
