@countryclassic automotive feeler gauges for spark plug gaps at automotive stores. Fender recommends about .010 inches for relief but the Custom Shop uses less relief like more about .007 approximately. I find it depends on how hard the player picks or strums. For a more aggressive technique I use more relief. Fender FMIC owns many guitar companies including Gretsch recommends action height of 5/64's on strings D, G, B, E and 6/64's which is 3/32nd on low E, A. Approximately I use 6/64 on D. .
@RonSiwicki
@RonSiwicki 12 жыл бұрын
I have been starting with 4/64's which equals one 16th pick up height when depressing string at the last fret for the bridge pick up and 6/64"s which is 1 and a half 16ths for the neck pick up.

What is important on a guitar is that the fingerboard is manufactured as straight as possible and then that the frets are correctly installed and leveled and crowned with care. The nut height is important to be not too high hard to play and pull strings sharp.or too low buzzing. There are proper measurements but a rough rules of thumb is to have a hair of clearance under string and first fret when you press the string between the 2nd and 3rd fret.
@StefanAndreiRosu
@StefanAndreiRosu 11 жыл бұрын
I guess the capo helps to see how the neck is curved when compared to the strings. You press down on the strings in two points: first fret and 14th fret (i think). And you'll see the neck is parallel with the strings (they touch) or it's over/under bowed.

Anyone ever work with old Gretsches? I have a 1948 Gretsch 125F that I need to adjust the truss rod. It's hard to tell if it's a standard Allen key or if it's some kind of Torx screwhead and I don't want to jam something in there and ruin it
@RonSiwicki
@RonSiwicki 12 жыл бұрын
The maximum relief or clearance on a neck should be around the 8th fret capoing the first fret and pressing at the last fret or Fender used to also recommend where the neck meets the body fret. Leaving your guitar leaning against something especially in the winter may result in a compound warp of the neck which usually means the frets have to be removed and replaced to plane the fingerboard straight. The heat from the funace in winter dries out the wood so leave your guitar by a cool wall.

I found this takes care of fret buzz at the top of the fretboard. I am having an issue where the upper and lower frets have no buzz, but after following these instructions, I'm still getting buzz in the middle fret range, ie 6-13, on the D and G strings mostly. What can be done for that?

Is the "depress the last fret and use the feeler gauge on the eight fret" comment universal to all guitars? I.E. Fenders, Gibsons etc....? Thanks in advance.
@natef226
@natef226 6 жыл бұрын
Somewhat, as long as your maximum relief falls between the 6th and 9th fret. Each guitar is a little different and number of frets matters too. The 8th fret is a good reference point but my Strat has it's maximum around the 7th. I use a relief gauge that spans multiple frets to find the proper relief

That's true to a degree but apparently all guitars are diff. Some change from truss rod adjustment quickly, some take about a hour, some take like you said 24 hours. I would play it safe though and wait 24 hours. Patience!

your might need a fret dress due to fretboard tong rise. Truss road adjustments affects mainly from fret 3 to 12 and doesnt do anything beyond fret 12.

@globalnova
@globalnova 3 жыл бұрын
@@jackaylward1278 i changed string gauge too to 9.5 then to 9s.. the buzzing has improved , i had too much relief , but with 9s i feel like i can't eliminate all buzzing with low action, i can with higher action but i think this guitar would do better with 10s . If 10s are good for you it should be able to be set up nicely . For now i am living with a little buzz, it is a beautiful guitar but i am also not really bonding with the size ( am used to smaller, thinner , contoured bodies) so may sell it. Have to play it more first
