Gee I guess I'm older than you because I remember getting Gretzky rookie cards as a kid. Problem was I didn't like the Oilers so I remember trading them or putting them in the spokes of my bicycle. I'm fortunate that I just picked one up 6 months ago. Honestly I had mine graded with Beckett and it came back a 7 but looks better than that PSA 9 OPC. That's why I'm not a big fan of PSA. The big name players they seem to give higher grades than they deserve. I guess I should send in some other Gretzky cards for grading. I didn't realize his All Star card went for that much. As for the helmet... The auction house is going to stand behind the authenticator. If it turns out bogus the auction house isn't responsible, the authenticator is. Very interesting and fun video.

@angushiltz4880 Congrats on picking up a Gretzky RC!!! I think a BGS 7 would be a fantastic card to own! 💪🔥🏆 For the Helmet, I agree with what you're saying... there's gotta be tons of fine print and lawyered-up documents that protect them from any serious trouble, unfortunately. I did see a video the other day of PWCC selling someone a fake Jordan rookie auto and once he called a news reporter to dig into the story, he got all of his money back. So I'm sure that's the worst of what happens to an auction house.

Just a note on the Gretzky helmet protecting the "Great One's" head. I would argue that Dave Semenko and later Marty McSorley did that.

That's disappointing on the part of Goldin Auctions regarding the Gretzky helmet. I'm really sorry to see this. Good on Shawn Chaulk to pursue this matter. Hopefully Goldin Auctions will listen to him.

@Lanarkwow Ya, you'd think the big auction places would have teams that look at collectibles under a microscope to ensure authenticity, but I guess not 😬 I wonder what Goldin would do if the Buyer were🤔 to complain and ask for money back?

@dankelly5150 I definitely think the responsibility falls on the Buyer to research and investigate before making a large purchase like this... but I would also like to see better processes for Auction Houses to double-check things. But hey, at the end of the day, if the Buyer is happy, who are we to judge? 😀😜😬😜

I have game worn jersey pieces of Gretzky on a card , I have 5 or 6 of that same card of the oilers, I have numerous rookie cards from Jerry Rice, Dan Marino, Steve Young, Gretzky, Mcguire, jose Canseco, griffy jr , you name it I probably have double of it . 100,000 card collection bought in the late 90s. Everything from hockey to movie cards

couldnt the buyer of the Gretzky helmat pay, buy it, then sue goldin/mears for auction fraud do to the fake the helmat is fake AND faslely Authenticated? if so the person who mightve bid on the helmat mightve done it on purpose lol. Always greeat video as always. One of if not the most underrated channels in the community!

@ItsPandaKZfaqYT I think Goldin and the big auction houses have lots of fine print and things put together by high-priced lawyers, so they're protected. So it's on us as buyers to really look closely and double-check stuff before bidding/buying. Thank you for the positive words! I appreciate it very much!!! 😀🙏💪

I hope whoever bought that gretzky helmet sees this video somehow and if he goes to get it authenticated can easily win a lawsuit. Chaulk said it perfectly "what a joke".

I’ve seen a good amount of clean cut edges on o pee chee Gretzky rookies. I doubt they’re all sheet cut

@@hockeycardsincanada If you look at a lot of OPC Gretzky rookies you’ll notice a lot of the cards with clean cut edges don’t have blue lines. More than likely because the wires used to cut the cards had little wear and the defect on the printing plate wasn’t there yet. I believe the cleaner edges and no blue lines are more likely “first print” cards.

@jimmy_iKoN I've read some stuff about this and the Blue Lines theory and definitely, some of the blue lines theories don't seem to add up. But hard to know what was really going on at the OPC Factory in 1979. I own one with blue lines, but I haven't seen any clear evidence that points to blue lines being 100% First Print even though many collectors seem to think it is true. 🤔Fun topic to speculate on! 😜 Thanks again for sharing your knowledge! 💪🔥😀

Inconsistent grading. The one with the top left corner issue is not a 9. And yeah, the other looks like a sheet cut which they say they don't grade. Another inconsistency.

So what is the deal with uncut sheets are they equal to the card value or more or less due to being in uncut form. I would hedge less if people are cutting them up but the rarity value may increase as well ?

@jimlane3899 I don't know the numbers on how many sheets were printed, but from what I've heard/read online, a lot of collectors shy away from a cut Gretzky rookie (they want one that's pulled directly from a pack), so I think the value will usually be less based around there being less demand. However, seems like cut cards get sold as legit pack-pulled, so it's Buyer Beware on RCs with edges that are too clean and sharp. And I think the demand for the full sheets has to be much lower as it's a lot harder to collect and store them. I don't think I'd ever buy one based on not having anywhere to store it safely.

@@hockeycardsincanada Thank you for the info and update. I agree with you on storing them . Have dragged my Gretzky RC (OPC) around and the other two sheets since I was a kid. Don't see them that often so hard to know value. Back in those days a top loader was a shoebox a clothes pin and a bicycle spoke. Again thank you and would be scary to try that gum in the unopened box but then again it couldn't get much stale than it was in 79/80.

@@hockeycardsincanada I grew up in London Ontario which at the time was home to an OPC plant. My uncle got them for both my brother and I for Christmas back in 79. Did get to tour the plant in my cub scout days unfortunately as stated uncut sheets ate cumbersome so my last year Bobby Orr card sheet was destroyed and uncut Star Wars with Chewy and a sand fighter on the back. They gave us them at end of tour. Managed to find top loaders for Gretz set 20 yrs on. Cards have cone along way but the old stuff I like better all the stats and sometimes a highlight tidbit in corner. Plus you got that pink powdery stick they called gum or the picture of the team for team checklist.

Oh yeah, that helmet is a total fake!!!! Of course they didn't take it down but at this point, nobody should be surprised by their actions.

Yes it absolutely matters if the card was pack pulled versus sheet cut. Sheet cut would be equal to box bottoms. I think the one PSA 9 looks like it was sheet cut but PSA graded it anyway. As far as the PSA 10, I would take the one on the right. What do you think for these two questions you asked?

@thehighlanders607 I also think the PSA 9 is sheet cut. It's just too smooth on all the edges compared to all the other high-end versions. And as for the 2x PSA 10s, I don't have a super strong opinion... but I was just looking again now and I think maybe I prefer the one on the left. But both look either great or kinda equally flawed. So we could each have our own lol 😜 As always, I appreciate your thoughts!

Do you think it matters if its sheet cut versus pack pulled? The reason I think it matters is because when it comes to sheet cut, who is doing the cutting? And how many times is ok to then cut/trim said card? Thanks for your thoughts/comments as well.

@thehighlanders607 Oh yes, as for sheet cut cards. I don't have too strong of an opinion on this either. I'm in two different minds. 1) For collecting cards to hopefully hold their value, I would almost always be looking to collect what the majority of collectors deem to be valued the best 2) I also like and appreciate Eye Appeal, so I'd also be ok with owning a Sheet Cut card if it looked nice. Though what I'd be willing to pay would be less I think.

@@hockeycardsincanada I agree with you on both of your points. When you said paying less, is what I was getting at. Paying less because its not packed pulled. How much less would be up to the buyer but as a buyer, it would be nice to know if it was sheet cut or not for the reasons I have previously stated.

I recently acquired a 1980 Wayne Gretzky OPC 2nd year - PSA 9 - but the back says printed by Topps. This is the first I ever seen like this. What are your thoughts on this?

@ijksmom99 If it says printed by Topps on the back of the card, I'd say there was an error in the grading process and it's actually just a Topps card. If it's OPC, it would have French and English on the back. I would contact the seller and see if you can get a refund. If you purchased from eBay or one of the main auction websites, get them involved too. Also double check the serial number with what's on the PSA website because it might not be a legit PSA case. But very odd to find a Topps card inside a PSA case marked OPC. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck and feel free to update me.

those PSA 10's dont even look it at all, even the Oilers logo is not centered in both..PSA sometimes makes me raise an eyebrow 🤔
