Got a 517/16 going my Way by Courier right now. Nice video. Like Andrew Howarth wrote in the comments before me. These cameras really catches a person! Just amazing what the engineers were capable of in the 1930’s-50’s. Stay cool and safe. Regards from Denmark

Thanks for this. The main reason I'm shooting with a Konica T3/A2 and an old Olympic TLR, and HP5+ is to replicate photos from the early 30's - 50's. I'm interested in the Ukrainian Catholic/Orthodox churches, old wooden grain elevators and pre-rubber farm equipment in our area (West Central Manitoba). Original photos would have been taken on cameras (my next one will be a folding camera) and old Brownie boxies.

Like, replicate individual photos, or the style from that era? I have many of my grandfather's slides from the 40s shot with an Argus C3. There is much to replicate, from the terrible lenses, to the terrible film, to the often sublimely un-self-aware compositions. I could work my whole life and not achieve the amazing photos from that era because I'm too caught up in making things look "good" and "right." People didn't know what they were doing, and it was wonderful.

The old school paper print would add a lot to your good images. The frame with the washed out quadrant is, in my view, a slight of hand. Really nice narration added a lot to a good topic.

Nice Video , thankx ! .... you managed to get some really nice images from that camera. I've got a Nettar sidefolder ... mine has the 105mm 4.5 lens. looking forward to test it soon. The photos certainly have a character which is difficult to obtain with a digital camera.

Nice video! Your testing procedure is first rate, and the subjects are nice. Now step up your game and trade up to a Super Ikonta with a rangefinder and Tessar four element lens! Once you start down the folding camera path, it's hard to step away - a Hasselblad in your pocket! Andy

@@Gribley Thanks. I just have put a piece of plastic film where the film would go, shut the back, opened the flap on the red window and shone a laser pointer at the wall 4' away from the camera. It appears to be focussing correctly now. Hoping to get out soon with the cameras again but it is very cold and grey here right now.

@@BarwickGreen That's exactly how it's done, but be aware that the focus plane and the plane of the red window are NOT the same. Might be best to mark the film itself with a marker or something so you can tell which is which.

Cool! I just got a Nettar 515 -- 6x4.5 -- but very similar to what you have (mine has the Nettar 75mm/f4.5 lens and Klio shutter). All looks good. But instead of an exposure-counter window on the "bottom" of the back which would show the correct 1-16 exposure marks on the backing paper, it has two windows at the top which show the 1-8 marks for 6x9 exposures. I think that this model was prewar and 120 backing paper did not have the 6x4.5 markings on it at the time. So the frame-advance procedure is odd, but I did find a copy of the manual, so we'll see how it works when I run a test roll through it. But I did have a question since I would prefer to use red/orange/yellow filters when shooting B&W -- how did you get a red filter to fit on your lens for your second roll? Thanks! And I definitely appreciated your humor! Ever get any photos at the Meth Motel???
@Gribley
@Gribley 3 жыл бұрын
I briefly owned a similar 645 format Nettar with the same exposure windows. Pretty clever, actually. Regarding filters, I just hold them over the lens. I've read that Series V or VI filters will work, but I use them so rarely that I haven't picked any up.

@@Gribley -- Well, there was a finished roll of AgfaPan APX 400 in the camera, and I shot a roll of UltraFine Extreme 100 (B&W) in it and those are in the mail on their way to The Darkroom in California. So I will see how well it worked for me -- seemed OK when using it, but of course, who knows until the film is developed!

You need the add on range finder for these cameras to be able to extract the quality these cameras are capable of. i.ebayimg.com/images/g/v4cAAOSwkNFcmHsR/s-l1600.jpg BTW, the lens is a 3 element coated design and I believe it was manufactured by Rodenstock so the Novar lens is top quality when stopped down to about F11~F16.
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. The 3 element Novar was a low end (cheapest) lens Zeiss made for its low end roll film cameras. It actually does a very decent job if you keep the aperture small. Rodenstock? Zeiss would have chewed off its corporate foot before mounting a rival's lens on its cameras. The one design choice Zeiss indulged in for all of its roll film cameras until the late 1950s was the front lens element focusng rather than unit focusing the whole lens. They started with it when they didn't incorporate rangefinders. Later, to keep up with the competition, they added grossly complex and expensive rangefinders required to still focus by front element, even though a unit focusing rangefinder was cheaper to build and generally allowed a better image. Sort of a rut mentality, which allowed the competition to make better cameras at lower cost. It's a sad but repeated story for Zeiss, which in the end destroyed its camera business in the end.
@Gribley
@Gribley 3 жыл бұрын
Gotta agree with Randall re: the Novar lens. And he expertly describes the reason I don't want the Super Ikonta. Waaaay too complex. Also, as far as I'm aware, there was no add-on rangefinder specifically for the Nettar. The camera doesn't even have a shoe.
@Gribley
@Gribley 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly why I wanted a Nettar rather than a Super Ikonta.
@lensman5762
@lensman5762 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gribley If Mr Randall cared to google the history of the Novar lens, I am sure that he would realise his mistake. Novar was a 3 element design subcontracted to Rodenstock and Steinheil and a third partner whose name escapes me now. The only Zeiss lens used was the super expensive ( at the time ) 4 element Tessar which was reserved for the top of the range Super Ikonta but some rare examples of Mess or Ikonta too. Zeiss Ikon was actually a syndicate backed Zeiss capital but it involved even more illustrious optical companies such as Dagor. It was split after the war between ' East ' and ' West ' Germany and Zeiss itself eventually went in partnership with Voightlander. The bottom line is that if the camera is treated like a proper MF and the lens stopped down two or three stops the results can be fantastic. Enjoy your new camera.

I have a question. I mostly take pictures at 35mm, but I'm thinking about buying a Central European format. The question is, is it worth it? It is possible to buy Zeiss ikon exactly the same, or it will still be better to buy something modern, like Pentax. Although the price bites

I normally shoot it at f/16 or f/22 . . . but this is more a practical decision because there are no shutter speeds below 1/25. So if I want a consistent result, I have to get exposures into the seconds just so I can reliably count them. I'm using ISO 100 film. If you used faster film I'd recommend f/8 or f/11. Anything wider and you're going to miss focus sometimes.

1) (23:56) WOW! If all of your pictures would came this good, you wouldn't have nothing to complain about in regards to this camera. 2) More frequent agitation could solve the problem with white borders on your film, but than agin, that could increase the grain... 3) Dogs are much better mannequins, in my opinion. My dog has a lot of patience for photography, unless there's a bird or rodent nearby. In that case, the hunt is on...

@KennethHOlsen 3 жыл бұрын
This is a camera waiting for a photographer. Test the shutter speeds, get a spot meter, get a range finder or pace out distances so you can judge ranges, use the rule of thirds and do some reading on composition. Why didn't you spend the time to get in front of the car, or get closer and fill your frame with the subject or find a single point of interest. Buildings lapping on buildings draws your eye to nowhere. This camera technically far outshines your composition abilities. Technical Pixel peeping is of no use if you can't get a shot that anyone wants to look at. Driving around for hours is just driving around for hours. You could have spend 4 shots at home on your wife holding the cat and created a good image that would have been worth the effort, with an interesting subject and the edge softness might have added value to the composition. I know this may sound harsh but meant as constructive criticism. No one wants to see a side long shot that glances off a building into non descript traffic no matter how sharp
