Parenting Aging Parents

Жыл бұрын

When we think of grief we usually think of funerals and sympathy cards, however we can grieve for someone who is still alive.
It's called Anticipatory Grief. We might not even realize how it's affecting us as we interact with our aging parents
Garrick Colwell is a Certified Grief Educator. In an interview with Kim & Mike Barnes of Parenting Aging Parents, Garrick shares how to know if you're suffering from anticipatory grief, what causes it, how it shows up, how it's different from regular grief, why grief and mourning are not the same and how to cope.

I’ve been anticipating this in waves since childhood 🤦🏽‍♀️ think it’s due to growing as at an only child and your parents often become like your best friends

It is hard since our parents have been the ones we have looked to for answers and advice.

I’m feeling this right now as I’m watching my aging mother experience extreme shortness of breath just doing small things. She has COPD.

Thanks to all of you! I am in anticipatory grief alot because 10 days ago my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer....16 months ago he had a tumor inside the esophagus and now its spread to lymph nodes. I have been grieving this since the day we found out 16 months ago. Mr. Colwell I am so sorry for your loss and I so get it...about the wanting to travel and how the diagnosis changed everything! I feel like you described what we feel better then anyone I have heard so far. Thank you!

@@parentingagingparents My dad is in his 90's and I see him really slowing down. I will probably be there when he passes and the anxiety of this is something I've been feeling more and more. I'm sharing this video with my siblings because we really need to talk about this stage in my concerns. Just get that out there .
