As a retired electrical engineer (automated test) who has been coding for the last 50 years I have gone through the learning curve of becoming productive in a new programming language multiple times. My approach has always been to read the books to learn the syntax and then write code to reinforce what you learn. That approach always worked in the past, but, didn't help me as much with Scratch. My grandson and I have been getting together once or twice a week for over a year to develop our Scratch skills. Your video approach has allowed us to learn more about productive Scratch coding in the last 3 months than all we did in the previous year. You have a gift for explaining complex graphics concepts in terms that your followers can understand and adapt as we experiment with your code. The last thing I would like to say, and the reason I submitted this comment (which, by the way, I have never done in my life - I'm not a social media person) is thank you for going through the Scratch learning curve and saving me the countless hours of trial and error you spent developing the RPG series. I want you to know I understand and truly appreciate the effort you put into producing your game series. You should feel good knowing how much you are contributing to the positive development of a whole generation of Scratchers. I'll be seeing my Grandson at dinner tonight - can't wait to tell him episode 6 is out. Thanks, Mike

It's all starting to come together! Really amazing how much can done with smart programming in Scratch. I think this series has already added so much to the Scratch coding base and serve as a launching point to what is possible. Kind of like a library. Once people understand certain coding concepts, I fully expect the level of Scratch projects to steadily increase as more creators share fully thought out well designed concepts. The map/level creator is something so necessary for large immersive worlds that unless you had some skill in another program would be impossible for most scratchers. Thanks again for this awesome series!

From your tutorials I'm learning so many neat programming tricks!, useful in, and outside of scratch. Like for instance this one, 17:08, just a bit of simple math instead of having to do an entire if else statment. It would be cool if you could create a small compilation of a lot of the simple programming tricks

Hey Griffpatch - I think we killed two birds with one stone! Earlier, there was a bug that when you get to the right side of the screen with the editor on, you can walk OVER the palette. But now, since we added a ''Stamp'' block at the end of the Paint - Player script, we not only introduced Layer 3, but we also made the player BEHIND the palette!

One concept I would love to see you tackle in a sort of side tutorial (scratch backpack essentials?) is customizable keybinds for games. We got a small taste of this sort of system when designing our Mario platformer, but we never built upon it past defining variables for certain keys. I’ve already attempted to create a system for this, and it all works well except for changing the keybinds in-game, and i just had an idea for a fix. Alas, ‘tis late, so here’s to a tomorrow of possibilities :D

@@mustafamehdi8126 haha proprietary code >:) nah but it’s pretty much as simple as creating a list with all your keys in it, and setting up some sort of interface to select keys to rebind. the whole thing is actually fairly “done” in my follow-along, so if you can find that then uhh good job

I've done that before in the Super Mario Tile Scrolling Platformer tutorial episode when enemies were added. Oops! I messed it up because I did not "test" to see that I did it right, because somehow clicking the green flag was required for the enemy code to work.

I find it really neat how some of Scratch’s limitations can help to teach about how games work internally. I’ve used engines that have built-in scrolling and layers, so the issues shown in this tutorial series aren’t a factor. Having to call the tiles from a list, and refresh the screen every frame gives interesting insight into how games work deep down. I remember seeing that old Terraria project from a while back, and I was wondering, with this new tile drawing system, would it be possible to have that one smoothly scroll? Or is it simply too many tiles to draw at once

I was comparing our progress with this with your previous dev logs, and wow, there is STILL so much left to cover! We still have to animate those water/lakes in our maps. There is also the possibility of re-layering the player when they go up ladders or other structures in order to correct walking on, as well as underneath bridges. But I have a feeling that could possibly be covered very soon, maybe? Perhaps when we cover the area/wall collision pins, that would be a good time to cover the other possible colored pins that had came after the dev log? Anyways, great job as usual! The onion skinning option really does help a lot in building these maps. :)
