Very nice performance, rich with dynamics and emotional phrasing. I've come to a conclusion that this piece has no coherent timing, it speeds up and slows down. That's what I love about it, as most music these days just has one speed all the was through, which makes everything sound so mechanical. A true masterpiece and the best performance of this number.

An interesting observation as I have often noted the same thing of Derek and the Dominos "Layla" as one of the reasons I loved it so. I never thought of these two very different pieces of music as having something in common.

The best "translation" of this piece to popular music is "Insensatez" (or in English version, "How Insensitive"), by the Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Sokolov is a very gifted pianist. Few, if any can match him I don't think it is that the others who play this piece are so bad, they just aren't as good..

No, it's actually because on the sheet music there's written "stretto" on the part where it speeds up. "Stretto" means "tight" in italian and it means you have to speed up the tempo a lot, "tightening" up the notes.

I'm a 100% amateur and just heard a couple of versions of this piece (by good professional pianists) which made me think: "Meh, I prefer playing it myself." That's Never happened to me before... This interpretation is great though, an excellent lesson in dynamics and emotion. Thank you.

I think that part of the beauty of this piece is in fact about personal interpretation. This is a piece that can be played by a thousand masters and not and you'll never have the feeling of listening to the exact same piece twice. So if you can play this, play it with emotion, but let those emotions be true to yourself.

I think you have good ears, Carlo (?). I Just heard a version here that everyone 'loved' that sounded like a funeral march... no nuance in left hand, no rubato until near end, so slow.. but Mr. Sokolov does very interesting things with it indeed.

Yes, a little heavy all around, but it could be the influence of softer interpretations that I grew up with. One man’s pianissimo is another’s fortissimo (!). This is excellent, however.

It is really interesting to compare this interpretation with the one of Kahtia Buniatishvili (Verbier Festival). My personal preference goes to the younger pianist.

Sokolov is a virtuoso. Khatia is a concert pianist. Khatia plays this piece with the emotion of someone who has grieved greatly, but not reflective of Chopin. Sokolov plays it with Chopin’s heart and soul. It’s a beautiful piece that is widely interpreted and loved. Both versions are beautifully executed but in their different ways.

Well, but that what rubato is all about--'slow and unevenly paced'...it's called "artistic license"... And where do u think the staccato should be? I haven't seen staccato markings in the score...? Are you saying that his version is 'formulaic'? not argueing, just curious...
