the fact that this song is about her assault experience but in the music video she's at a mainly male dominated space, dancing and being surrounded by men sends a message of hope and rebirth, fighting your own fears and taking control of your life again

Yes and also it's like her statement "see you on a dark night" is directed to the men around her, the one's playing with her, the one's dancing with her, the one's she walks by, any of these men could be predators, she shows that it's not random evil people who commit assault but brothers, dads, people who's relatives would defend them and call them fun loving.

According to stats, depending where she is, there's a 9/10 probability it was a Hispanic or Bravo Mike. FtM transgenders have been shocked at how threatening men can be toward one another. It's a dimension not seen by women, and statistically violent assault on men is more common than strangers sexually assaulting women.

2:52 is such a beautiful moment in the video given the subject matter. As she comes into clash with the physical strength of males during the mosh and the beat picks up as she swallowed into it, you can see her smile with abandon and roll with the punches, it’s like she is fully through being reborn from her experiences in that moment. Totally mesmerizing and cannot stop replaying it. So liberating.

I've only now realized how interesting this music video is with the songs context. Knowing she was assaulted and that this song is about feeling unsafe at night, afraid of being attacked (presumably by a man) this music video feel like confronting masculinity (as almost all of the strangers shown are men of different ages and all the shows/activities are generally considered masculine). It feels like a video of trying to almost shock therapy yourself by surrounding yourself with what scares you (like men in general after one attacks you) and learning to be comfortable in that space, both interacting with them and just as someone who happens to be existing in that same space. Edit: I have been receiving comments on this regularly for the last 3 years. They entertain me to no end. And they also make me sad. To fellow victims: you are not alone. I hope you find peace from what has happened. To the trollz: keep trolling. They make me laugh. To the hurt men defending themselves or calling me a feminist (like that's a bad thing?) or that I'm saying all men bad or whatever: 1. I never said masculinity is a bad thing. I dont believe that. It is just as important as femininity. 2. I hope that someday you realize that you truly have no idea what it's like to be a woman. That you never will. That you see women being stay at home moms (which isnt easy but youll probably never be a sahd so how would you ever know) or famous streamers or only fans girls raking in money and you think we are privileged. That feminism has given us more power than men and that our lives are easier now than yours. There is nothing further from the truth. And as long as we suffer, we will speak on it. If you don't like it, close the page or help us. Art can be interpreted in any which way you like. It can mean multiple things at once. This is a fun song to dance to so i don't blame people for not wanting to assign a dark meaning. Don't! For many this is just a dance song. But don't hate on those of us that identify with a darker meaning :). Neither of us are wrong

This song is about a violent encounter with a male and her fear of men after, her fear of being alone but the need to be for protection. Im thankful for her music especially this album helped me get through something similar. I think she stated this album was her least favorite. I disagree because this album saved my life and helped me in so many ways a few years ago, i listened everyday after i moved to a new town and felt so alone and vulnerable, and her music matched the energy i needed to feel in synch with the world, it helped me feel safe doing ordinary things without the anxiety of pasts pain. She is a gift and i hope she never forgets when she made this art and her heart in this time. Thank you grimes for existing, you helped so many without knowing, i wish i could say thank you in person. Stay safe and strong

she stated in an interview that she was assaulted, and this song was kind of her way of coping with the situation. She said she spent years paranoid and frightened, and finally opted to make a song that kind of subverts her assault -- it kind of fingers the line of sounding like SHE'S the one stalking someone at night and also being stalked. The first half of the song is very narrative -- walking around at night, musing about how she can just walk up to the man and snap his neck. Sort of a reversal of power. But then, she talks about how -she- fearfully walks, staring straight ahead, fighting the urge to glance behind her, etc. However, this is still sung in sort of an ambiguous way, like she's commenting on the man she follows glancing at her, and she's staring straight ahead, focused on him. Finally, the "See you on a dark night" is pretty literal but still ambiguous, both the statement of the stalker and the stalked -- they know they'll see each other on a dark night. It's both helpless and powerful, to fit both roles. The second half is when it seems to turn to self-reflection and her fear of men. She mentions her aloneness and how it's hard to have a relationship with a man again, she can't find someone to hold her hand. But, she doesn't enjoy her fear, and she really just wants someone to give her the kick she needs to grow out of it; to look into her eyes and tell her everything is okay ("la la la la la~")

For those who don’t know, Grimes wrote this song because she was so afraid and paranoid to walk around in the dark by herself as she was afraid of getting attacked or followed because that happened to her before. She never wanted to go outside because of the paranoia and she was constantly looking behind her back; listen to the song again with this idea in your head. It’s sad that such a well known loved song has such a sad back story :( WE LOVE YOU GRIMES

The “see you on a dark night” actually has a double meaning, first referring to the fact that she was assaulted on a dark night and she will see ‘them’ there, but the other meaning is that she will see them on a dark night meaning at night time in her dreams, well nightmares, it’s clever.

I never walk about after dark It's my point of view 'Cause someone could break your neck Coming up behind you Always coming and you'd never have a clue I never looked behind all the time I will wait forever Always looking straight Thinking counting all the hours you wait [Chorus] See you on a dark night See you on a dark night See you on a dark night See you on a dark night [Verse 2] And no, I'm not a jerk I would ask if you could help me out It's hard to understand 'Cause when you're runnin' by yourself It's hard to find someone to hold your hand And now it's good to be tough like me But I would wait forever I need someone else To look into my eyes and tell me "Girl, you know you've got to watch your health"
