I stood in front of Steve the entire last show in Greenville. Steve looked at me the entire show me watching his guitar licks. They were amazing that night. Ronnie was to my right. Steve stood on left side that night Allen on the right side of Ronnie..

I was at their show in Oakland, CA on 7/2/1977 I was standing right in between Ronnie Van Zant & Steve Gaines (closer to Steve) I was totally entranced by Steve's awesome guitar 🎸 playing, I remember he actually looked down at me a couple times & smiled at me, I'll keep that smile in my heart forever 😢 That was THE VERY BEST CONCERT EVER!!! The dock got me. The original one is still there. So bad ass. I have commented on countless videos an said it before an Ill say it again, keep doing this shit please, for those of us that can't go out an travel all over to see it, these videos are a real treat and treasure

It's not the same dock, check the direction of the boards in the photo of the band versus the video. Present dock is very old, but much newer than the previous one. Wood won't last that long beside water.

I wish my friend James was around to watch this, Skynyrd was his favorite band, in fact we used to call James Lynyrd Skynyrd. James wore a straw hat and we got to see Skynyrd live in Portland Oregon! Unfortunately my friend James passed away from alcoholism/homelessness. To my friend James: This is for you my friend forever! SKYNYRD RULES!!!

So sad to think of the fate of the band on that day in '77, but so happy that this was our time with music on the radio and NOTHING can ever take that away. Still listen to the music (turn it up) loud and proud. Who cares which band people think was the best in the Southern catalog...They're all GREAT!!!

Well done video! Lynyrd Skynyrd is my all-time favorite band. I am originally from Mexico, Missouri but now live in Fleming Island, FL and have performed many times at 'Whitey's Fish Camp' just a few minutes away. And I have played in Middleburg and Green Cove Springs, FL only minutes away. I always think about Ronnie and the band when playing these places. My wife actually went to school with Ronnie at 'Robert E. Lee High School' and has many stories about Ronnie and the band. I really enjoyed this video!

Allen Collins was my favorite player in the band. Way underrated player. The coach was a Korean war veteran and good man. Times have changed and if these guys where still alive I think they would all dislike most music now. Especially rap and thrash type rock.

Interesting video! I was personal friends with Larry Junstrom, Skynyrd's original bass player. Larry left the band before they really got famous to join .38 Special. He played with them over 30 years. Larry was an avid amateur radio operator and that's how I met him. We talked many many times on the air and I got to meet him at a ham radio get together here in Orlando a few years ago. A great guy! He told me many stories of his life on the road and the early days with Skynyrd. Sadly, he passed not too long ago...I miss talking with him.

i know another HAM radio guy who plays bass, and HE knew Larry real well, did some renovations on his house, and i ended up with some of Larry's recording gear from his home studio- nothing big- just some processors - but i treasure it just the same...it has that 'MOJO' -

@@edwhite7475 and this is the case of lovesick blues and cov sick deaths im so sorry for the comments on Skynyrd I forgotten to say that honkets were awesome and so beautiful and harmony s sounded so nice and I to Ed white I got to play with 38spcial in Panama City Beach as a 🎸 fill in the bass player was sick and I was in the right place that was a beautiful show in my favorite state I loved Florida so much 💙 ❤️ I stayed there after the show I meat a local 😂 band called southern knights and that let me up on stage guitar was my main thing I loved the band all southern rock with a few classic rock covers its cool to hear some of the stories Ed keep playing bless you all God 🙏😇 bless you all

Good job and well done. I have been a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan my whole life I'm 60. The crash happened the summer I graduated high school. This was tastily done Ronnie would like it. Thanks again, Peace.

I was to young back in the 70s to see the original band but I did get to catch a concert with the youngest Van Zant brother Johnny when he continued his older brothers legacies. One of my all time favorite bands growing up along with Donnie and 38 special. So many good memories. Thanks for bringing back all the great memories of back in the day growing up in the 70s & 80s ❤️

Danny Staton wow!!! I bet, so incredibly sad. Amazing talent lost. There’s a documentary I think on Netflix that was really fantastic about the band. So sorry for you. You were fortunate to have seen them all together. ❤️

Curtis Lowe was based on Ricky Medlock's (skynyrd current gtr player) father who played the dobro on his front porch, was a local legend. He and Ricky would hang out and listen to him play...(and go down to the corner store to get him wine..) Curtis Lowe was also a nod to Ronnie's appreciation of many old black blues players thru history that Ronnie was into.

I was gonna correct this dude also. I'm glad some 1 else new the right story behind that song.. Gotta do your homework bro.. And also the band name came from the tune camp Grenada.. And they had a joke about any thing happened and no 1 was there it was Lynyrd Skynyrd..and the gym teacher was also the kicker for the final decision if the band name.. Bobby Burns had the story on that one . Rick on boys. Heaven is rocking now

Thank both of yall for doing this. Some of those spots touched me. The dock and Hell House locations being a couple. At one of the two RVZ sites there is/was a concrete memorial with a poem by Charlie Daniels engraved in it. I saw Skynyrd twice. Both in 76' in my hometown of Nashville. The clothes the guys are wearing at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="562">9:22</a> are the same as in the Nuth'in Fancy album shots. I love that album. Hey guys, three of the Allman Bros. Band (Barry Oakley, Duane and Gregg Allman) are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery (along w/Elizabeth Reed) in Macon Ga. In case your ever in the area. peace to all...

There's something pretty cool and meaningful of having the original dock still existing below the new one...... it's as out of reach as the original band is to us now, but always there to remind us that such a fantastic and amazing band once existed, and will be remember by countless people... they became legends, and legends never die.

Thank you for showing our bench & plaque memorial for Jimmie,it is being repaired at the moment & will be back at Whiteys next April in 2022. There is also a concrete bench that his sister Jane had made and we dedicated at Riverside also.

Wow, this really made me smile. Ronnie's last concert was in Mississippi.. I'm from mobile Alabama. My grandparents were at that concert and by Pure luck got back stage passes and went to an after party with them!! My grandpa still smiles when he's talking about it. Im gonna have to show him this video! ❤️

That, i assure you, is NOT where Van Zandt is buried. A few years back, people vandalized the actual grave and tried to dig RVZ up. So, the family relocated Ronnie, Cassie Gaines & Steve Gaines bodies. Then moved the headstones towards the entrance of the cemetery. But Ronnie is buried in an undisclosed location.

Thank you for doing this story. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the greatest band of all time! My parents knew some of the members. Cassie was my mom's best friend. They grew up together. She was at my parents wedding. The Gaines'parents are the witnesses on my parents' wedding license and were very good friends with my grandparents. As a child, I remember my mom talking on the phone with Cassie. When they were going to be in a concert close by she would call and let my parents know. I'll never forget that tragic day. It was the first time I ever saw my parents cry. Their Street Survivors album cover was changed after the plane crash. They removed the flames from the cover. The original is hard to find and more valuable

Some say that the "Gimme Three Steps" story took place at a different place called "The Little Brown Jug", which was located at 2517 Edison Avenue. The Jug Saloon is 2 miles away at 5301 Lennox Ave & was originally called The Pastime Bar -- The owner recently renamed it in commemoration of Skynyrd, & some of the band members definitely hung out there back in the day as well, but there is debate over where the situation happened that inspired the song. I would guess that every bar owner in Jacksonville claims that Skynyrd & .38 Special members hung out there & that their place inspired some song.....

Amazing video, Skynyrds music will live on forever. In todays manufactured music industry stories of a group of lads getting together in the backwoods writing platinum albums is a thing of the past. BTW my father was at the hell house back in the day he grew up way down in Clearwater but found his way up for work and became friends with Gene. Although he never "worked" for the band he was part of the circle for a while. I feel we grew up in the wrong era.

Leon Wilkesons sister Mary was my friend. Leon wasn't in LS then but when I was at their house he was always praticsing his bass. He and Billy went to Forrest High.

It was probably books donated to the middle school library with the old Forrest H.S. stamp on it so us students assumed it used to be called Forrest High School. A few years ago Ed King was conversing with someone through comments that took a video of where hell house used to be.. I got the sense that he really wanted to go back to visit it or where it used to be from reading his comments to the guy that uploaded the video. I don't think he got the chance to do that before he passed away and I wish he had..

George I have to wonder what kind of hospitality Ed got , everyone was so young and he was probably a loner, but I loved Ed King he was a key to the direction or the music , I wish Ed was still with us , and I wish Steve Gaines and Cassie would have had a longer life , and I would have NOT wanted to fight Ronnie Van Zant I think Ronnie probably treated Ed kindly up until that show when he broke the whiskey bottle, I think Ronnie was a whiskey rock n roller

@@ljbull33 I also wonder the same thing about the hospitality Ed received.. When someone's from another town they are always an outsider to a certain degree & with Ed being from California.. I just hope he was treated fair because Ed was a good man and you'll never hear a song with a more recognizable opening guitar chord progression than Sweet Home Alabama and we have Ed King to thank for that.. The music wouldn't be special without the lyrics but the lyrics also wouldn't be special without the music either.. I heard Ed say in an interview that Ronnie got his guitar tech in trouble the night before ( drinking, fighting or both ) and the both of them were put in jail ( Ronnie & Ed's guitar tech ) By the time they were released from jail & made it to the concert Ed's guitar tech didn't have time to make sure Ed's guitar was in perfect working order and in the middle of a song Ed broke a string & that's what sent Ronnie flying off the deep end after the show & he didn't understand why Ronnie was so mad at him when Ronnie was the reason his guitar tech wasn't there to inspect & replace strings/parts for his guitar.. I think it really bothered Ed that Ronnie dropped the hammer on him for something that was to no fault of his own ( Ed's ) On a side note Ed King & Steve Gaines were both born September 14th 1949... That's one of those things that makes you wonder... Thanks for the reply and take care... George

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Roots are in Jacksonville For Elvis fans, there’s Graceland. For Beatles fans, there’s the Cavern Club. If you are a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, there is only one preeminent spot that truly speaks to their roots. That place is affectionately known at “Hell House”, and is located near Green Cove Springs, just outside Jacksonville. Like many locations that disappear over time, “Hell House” is long gone, destroyed by fire many years ago. The once-rural land on Peter’s Creek is giving way to the never-ending quest for real estate, and will soon have a new family making their own history on a spot viewed as Mecca for the legion of Skynryd fans. I visited it recently, before it all is gone, hidden from view in another gated community. "Hell House" is gone, but its foundations can still be seen in the ground. And the dock that Ronnie and the boys fished off between practice sets, is still present. If you are a true Skynyrd fan, you will hopefully enjoy this few minutes of nostalgia. As I walked the hallowed ground, I could hear strains of "Gimme Three Steps", "Free Bird", "Saturday Night Special", and so many more. I could feel the scorching heat that must have been barely tolerable in this tin-roofed shack full of high watt amplifiers blasting their songs for the raccoons, deer, egrets, and occasional gator that passed by. When naming the "Greatest Southern Rock Band" you seem to have forgotten The Allman Brothers Band. Formed the same time in the same city, Jacksonville, Fl. I'd have to say Skynryd and the Brothers would be co-greatest bands.

Jimmy VanZant was Ronnies cousin. He died of kidney disease. He also was a musician and lived in Middleburg.

Dude i just went 2 weeks ago to the swamps of Mississippi and paid my dues at the crash site. I got lots of pictures only thing they were taken at night. Thats just the way it worked out but the columbs that are up are 8' tall and have scupters of Ronnie, Steve and Cassie. I could feel there spirit in that humid air that night.

Leonard Skinner had taken it well that the band was named after him. He was a good sport. I thought there should have been a tribute on his memorial.

Great video that highlighted some great Skynyrd locations. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately when discussing Cassie Gaines the photo shown was not Cassie. It in fact is another member of the "Honkettes", Leslie Hawkins who is pictured alongside Dean Kilpatrick in the photo. Sadly Dean was also tragically killed in the plane crash. Also as stated in the comments Allen Collins is buried alongside his wife in a plot across the street from Ronnie and Leon.

For Elvis fans, there’s Graceland. For Beatles fans, there’s the Cavern Club. If you are a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, there is only one preeminent spot that truly speaks to their roots. That place is affectionately known at “Hell House”, and is located near Green Cove Springs, just outside Jacksonville. Like many locations that disappear over time, “Hell House” is long gone, destroyed by fire many years ago. The once-rural land on Peter’s Creek is giving way to the never-ending quest for real estate, and will soon have a new family making their own history on a spot viewed as Mecca for the legion of Skynryd fans. I visited it recently, before it all is gone, hidden from view in another gated community. "Hell House" is gone, but its foundations can still be seen in the ground. And the dock that Ronnie and the boys fished off between practice sets, is still present. If you are a true Skynyrd fan, you will hopefully enjoy this few minutes of nostalgia. As I walked the hallowed ground, I could hear strains of "Gimme Three Steps", "Free Bird", "Saturday Night Special", and so many more. I could feel the scorching heat that must have been barely tolerable in this tin-roofed shack full of high watt amplifiers blasting their songs for the raccoons, deer, egrets, and occasional gator that passed by. I just watched Zombieland 2 with my 15 year old son today. We heard "Freebird" during it & I asked him if he has ever heard that song, he said no. Then I asked him if he's ever heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd & said no. I have failed as a parent.

Think Ronnie's house was on the empty lot at the end of Mc Vickers Rd. n Brickyard. In Johnny's Brickyard music video they used the neighborhoods dock to the left. This possibly may be the address 267 Brickyard Rd.

The talk about going to a cemetery without a map reminds me of when I finally revisited my grandparents graves roughly twenty years after they were buried (and the last time I visited). It was on a whim and I was going by fuzzy memories of rough location. It took me about a half-hour to find it. The cemetery had changed so much during that time. Of course, I went on a cloudy drizzly day. I was the only person out there. I can't imagine how long it would take to find a grave of someone you know is in there but no real idea where exactly they are.

I’m a long time Skynyrd fan, GREAT video, thanks so much. I bought Johnny’s cd “Brickyard Road” when it first came out in 1989. The whole album is great! Every time I listened to the song”Brickyard Road”, I would always get misty eyed. “I can see him, standin’ on the dock, his old Chevy out in the front yard…”
