I would like to say thanks for this. I am a airfeild systems tech that has worked on all these systems for over 25 years in the Air Force and the FAA. I have worked on all the equipment that you have covered but never seen it from the pilots point of view. I also worked out at Nellis for 5 years so i know this area pretty well. Again thank you and I did geek out because i understood everything you talked about.

to help with the magnetic deviation just remember east is least west is best. if east subtract, if west add. which you'd find the deviation on the chart page.

The real life F-1 was automatically taking in account magnetic variation. I don't know why they have modeled it in this way.

Good tutorial, the setup is well prepared and presented. This is much better than your trial&error- style videos where you asked your mates even basic stuff. As for the flying - slow down, mate 😂. Your wife wouldn't be happy if you dropped all the groceries she sent you off to buy on your kitchen floor 🤣

I know everyone refers to steering a magnetic heading. However, using a magnetic compass you are really steering a COMPASS heading. The difference between a true and compass heading is called the ‘Compass Error’ The compass error is the algebraic sum of you magnetic variation and deviation. If you are discounting any deviation, then the compass error will equal your magnetic variation (East or West). Thereafter, you just need to remember the ditty ‘Error East, Compass Least, Error West, Compass Best’

East is least and West is best. Also The complete equation goes something like: Timid Virgins Make Dull Companions-Add Whisky (True, Variation, Magnetic, Deviation, Compass Add West Variation. Conversely: Dead Men Can't Vote-At Elections (Deviation, Magnetic, Compass, Variation Add Negative for East). Memory's a little foggy as it's been some time. Someone will have it right.

@@suecobandito8954 Yeah… From True -> Compass we use… ‘True Virgins Make Dull Companions’ or, going the other way, from Compass -> True, we use… ‘Cadburys Dairy Milk Very Tasty’. And… “Error West, Compass Best: Error East, Compass Least’ and/or “EAST = PLUS: WEST = MINUS”

Cap, you asked yourself at around 17min in why there was a 1 mile deviation with your previsions on the distance reading. It's simply because the marker you put on the map is ~10 miles (9.7) out from the runway threshold, NOT the TACAN beacon, to which the distance reading is calculated. Nothing to do with magnetic variation 😄

Thanks for these Grim Reapers they are so helpful. I wish ED would add a feature to tell you what the magnetic variation is with their maps because the way I understand it is that this is constantly changing with the time and date so depending on what time and date you put into the mission editor the magnetic variation changes as well.

Basically, on a ship (or plane), the following formula applies to EVERYTHING: Real = Fake + Correction or True = Instrument + Correction Notice it's ALWAYS a PLUS in the formula. Now, Correction is PLUS for East or North, MINUS for West or South. So for bearings/headings: True = Gyro + e True = Magnetic + declination = (Compass + deviation) + declination So, looking at the compass, let's say it shows 002, you look at the deviation table and see 2E around 000. Known map declination is 15W. 002 + 2E +15W = 002 + 2 - 15 = 349 In reverse, I always resist the temptation to reverse the signs (i.e. Fake = Real - Correction). Mentally moving the correction to the other side of the equals is less prone to confusion in the long run.

you missed it by 1 mile because the tacan is not on the threshold of the runway but rather in the middle of the airport , so you should set your add vector from the physical tacan location not the start of the runway ;) and you'll see that the tacan was 1mile ish east of the 10miles marker that you used for the add vector

Don't you have approach plates on a PDF somewhere to check your IAP & FAF (INITIAL APPROACH POINT & FINAL APPROACH FIX RESPECTIVELY)? IN THIS SIM

Would have been easier for you if you had the charts for the airport in question. They list a nice MSA for you or "Minimum Sector Altitude" meaning you are never to go below this altitude unless you are on the approach, and then of course you have the "minimums" this is the altitude where you have to see the runway and can vary pending on the conditions present, but usually no lower than 250 feet, if you do not see the runway you are to expedite a go around and climb to go around altitude listed in the charts for the airport and fly the designated go around procedure.

Cap, was suggested to make this request to you here from GR discord. I know you have modeled 7th Fleet & Taiwan vs China within the last year. China has stated they will conduct a military response to US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelso's visit to Taiwan, today. The 7th is in play, but only 1 Tico, but with the closer addition of LHA-7 - an F-35 light carrier. This is relevant immediately. I'd love to see you model this. I think the error at 17:00 is because you added the 10 nm on the add vec from the thresehold, but the distance should be measured from the Vortac, the vortac was about 1-2 nm behin the thresehold, so you ended up short by approx. 1 Mile

So does this mean we can expect more tutorial videos? I've noticed a few in the past week. If so, good. I'm not sure what the full reason was behind dropping them originally other than IIRC pressure from ED to stop in which case fuck them. Your tutorial vids are the best. Between the increased tempo of training vids and your comment about hating the developers in the Taiwan vid I'm hoping this signals a change in direction for GR's content back to your original standard.

Short story: I got dropped by ED. As a result I don't want to do the tutorials, which essentially cost me $ to put out rather than earning $. I was only making these vids to help them. Hope that makes sense.

my radios still dont work. i can hear control but cant answer them. my pilot dont talk. what it can be? he speaks f1 and H mode, but radio doesnt work than XD

Hey Cap, I don't know if you've seen this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oL-XnLllruCbeWQ.html) or not, but I thought it was an interesting bit of British history. It's not DCS related, but space related. If the British had built their own version of an A-12/SR-71, I think the pressure suit of the pilots would look similar. My favorite part is the helmet.

Cap!!! U.S. speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi took off on Tuesday from Kuala Lampur Indonesia in C40 presidential aircraft. Escorted by 12 U. S. Fighters based in Japan. Once they reached Taiwan Airspace. They were met by a squadron of Taiwanese fighters. One Tanker was also involved. Chinese sent up 21 aircraft including J11s J16s Y8 and Y9. Please wad game this.
