just got this old video of yours recommended to me due to following events over there in general. It's actually pretty remarkable how well this video put together the information and predicted the events currently unfolding. It also explains why the formation of the dike under that row of craters produced such a strong and quick reaction from the Icelandic authorities and civil defense. Some people in authority were clearly paying attention to the history here and realized that this had drifted from problematic to one of the more dangerous scenarios.

I mapped the SW portion of Grindavik as most at risk for lava flow inundation
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic 2 жыл бұрын
There are hills south from Mt. Þorbjörn that help from that direction but the eruption would have to come up at Svartsengi by the Blue Lagoon, or where the land uplift is, to flow over SW of town, or nearby it... Lava from Eldvörp is likely to flow to the sea, and there is already a huge lava field on the seabed there so that path is already mapped and doesn't pose a threat to town. But I do however still need more low pass dronefootage and ground footage from this are to see this better, and already planning the next trip :)

Your sarcasm is an intrinsic part of the allure of your channel. " ... go with the flow." Great pun! Incredibly prophetic. Everything you said in this video seems to be playing out. Sadly. What I am also beginning to learn about the Icelandic people is that in adversity, you still have a sense of humour and are very focused on supporting each other. Incredible that the Red Cross only needs to take care of a small percentage of the population of Grindavik. Thank you, Gylfi, for all your dedication to bringing us clear and exciting updates

This video just gave me goosebumps. The accuracy is phenomenal. It’s terribly sad what’s happening. I can’t imagine how those poor townspeople are coping currently, effectively seeing it break apart more and more each day. However, the response across Iceland has been outstanding, from the government, Icelanders, utility workers, unions, other businesses, rescue teams…… no way would all that support be put in place so quickly here (UK) or in a lot of countries. Iceland loves its people. Each person matters. The rest of the world should wake up and take note. Thanks for your knowledgable videos. Iceland is my favourite country to visit. Whenever I’m there, I feel like I’ve gone ‘home’…. It’s a feeling I don’t get anywhere else in the world. I’m hoping for the best outcome here - whatever that may be! 🤞🏻

Finally, the sport center had it's fault open in the middle through it... You were not far off... At least now they realize, that cleaning the surface with a bulldozer to fill the gaps would not be enough... Sadly one person died trying this... He was about to do the finishing touches on the surface, made the filling material dense with this rattling compressing manual machine, but there was a system of caves underneath, that did break down and took him in the depth of the underground...

Thanks for sharing. Before 2016 Iceland was just a mysterious island in the North Atlantic to me. Then I decided to plan a holiday to your beautiful country a year later. When I left Iceland, I was 'saturated' with the beauty of all that I had seen. This was something I never experienced before and it also got me hooked, feeling Iceland is kind of a 2nd home at least mentally. As a photographer I also got interested in geology and I had the privilege to visit the Fagradalsfjall eruption, top of my bucket list checked ! I recognize almost all locations you have flown the drone as I visited these locations last summer. I hope the people of Grindavik and the rest of Reykjanes find some rest and the situation either calms down or an eruption starts in a safe location.

This is the best video I’ve seen since this started in 21. Say it then show it . Draw arrows. We the audience don’t know the area or often what you’re referring to. Maps are good but then you look at video and it’s unclear what’s what . This video does a great job at all that. Thanks looking forward to more of your content I’m a volcano fan lol must be a KZfaq phenomenon. Some of The other channels in Iceland should take a lesson here.

Very relevant today (14/11/2023). The retirement home has been split in two by the widening fissure.

Rewatching this in November 2023, after seeing the cracks opening up in the town following the line of the old craters 🙁

I always have to think of this: raising the ground by an inch or two doesn't sound like much, but what a force is behind it - the energy that it takes to do that, that force is enormous.

Grindavik seems like a risky place to build a town, since it has a history of attracting lava flows.

That describes Iceland… The entire island is a lava flow.

@@allangibson2408 Add to that, the people who built the town didn't have the geological knowledge we have today. The cove provides a very safe place to off-load fish, so the fish processing and marketing industries grew up there, along with the houses etc.

I love your coverage. One of these days (By that I mean cycling through my favorite creators is many) I want to contribute because I think seeing a Volcano where Kyacking across oceans isn't practical, you bring this marvellous geological place to the remoteness of people. Is Eyjafjallajökull volcano vent one could hike up to see some of the house size rocks it hurled and other cool remnants of that eruptive event?
