I did this hike as well just a few weeks ago as part of the 26 summits program. This hike is a classic, but it's also fairly long - and a bit demanding - as you have to keep the concentration quite up there for a few hours, namely from the Faulhorn to Schynigeplatte. But to arrive at the old train and then ride down to the vally, seeing the bright blue water of the Brienzersee far below is breathtaking.

We just did this hike with my boys (11 and 7 years old) 2 weeks ago and it was great, such an adventure however we bearly made it to our last train from Schynige Platte back to Grindelwald 😉 We actually run last 2km to reach the train when passengers were already taking their places in the train 🤣 So really in the last moment 🤣

That's the hike I would like to do this October, not sure which direction is better: First to Schynige Platte or the other way?

I just did the hike two days ago and decided to go from Schynige Platte to First. Its advertised hiking time is 6 hours but I somehow did it in 5 1/2 hours with several stops for shooting videos _and_ a little delightful surprise: halfway through, there is a Berghaus Männdlenen where I got a bowl of delightful hot soup with sliced bread. I did bring some food and drink with me but this simply could not be passed up! If you intend to do the hike, start early because the last gondola down from First is at 17.30 and I think on the other end the last train down is at 17.58. At this point this is probably next-year's news because the Schynige Platte train stops running in a week or two (late October).

No, they have signs there reminding you that it's not allowed and carries a large fine.

I’m planning to do this hike in early July this year. Want to check if crampons will be needed?

I don't think you'll need glacier crampons, but it would be good to bring ice cleats. Usually lots of people have hiked around the snow patches by July, so there is a clear path but maybe slippery.
