I used to have somewhat of a nanny like you (I say somewhat because they didn't pay her and barely thanked her for raising me but I digress). She was from China originally and my parents were often dropping me into her apartment next door whenever they had work, fighting etc. She was always quite nice. Had somewhat of broken English. Always watched her practice calligraphy...Found it very relaxing. The grinding of the ink, the form and motions of the hands, the songs she used to hum (none of which I understood) but relaxing none the less. That and a lot of odd folk stories she used to tell me...Most of them being creepy/horror in context. Not that I minded. I guess what I'm getting at it is you bring back a lot of fond memories for me. Just discovered your videos. Relaxing and nostalgic. Brings back some of the few good memories of my childhood. I'm not entirely sure if you're Korean or Chinese (One of the two being my guess). But thank you for the flashbacks. Subscribed.

Haha, yeah, the stories were more because I always liked that sort of stuff. I was addicted to scary stories and movies as a kid. Well, I still am actually. I'm a writer (often a ghost writer for money) and a lot of the tales she told me influenced my writing style as an adult. I just wanted to clear up that I wasn't trying to imply that I relate you or your videos to something creepy. ; ) Thank you.

Ohhh. I was listening to the audiobook of the classic novel _Musashi_ and characters kept asking one another about whether or not anyone had an ink stone. Thank you for demonstrating how inkstones and ink sticks work. Now I understand.
@yanghaiying
@yanghaiying 11 ай бұрын
How was that book? Did you enjoy it?
@ianegfp
@ianegfp 11 ай бұрын
Eiji Yoshikawa's novel _Musashi_ is a very long epic novel which portrays life in a region of Japan during the end of the Samurai era. I love how he includes observations about the seasons, the landscape, the trees, plants, weather conditions, and animals too. I like looking up words from it on the Internet and learning new things, like about inkstones! It is similar to Mikhail Sholokhov's series _And Quiet Flows the Dawn_ which was also written in installments. Both books immerse the reader in the everyday life of that time and in how various characters try to make sense of life and their existence. It will be interesting to see how Yoshikawa chooses to end the book. Until then, I am still enjoying it. I am more than halfway through. Thank you for asking, Yang. Now the next time a character mentions an inkstone, I will remember you!@@yanghaiying

I don't know how to spell but the type of ink that you called "Qi" (?) seems actually quite good, but it is limited in its purpose. After having seen your demonstration, I would agree with you in that it's not good for black lines. For those who need even black texture with no faltering of shade, other inks are better. However, it seems that if the intent is to work with subtle shades of grey, this might be better. Its nature seems to be more very dark grey as opposed to black. This can be good though. It means one can make lighter shades of grey with less water in the brush, which can help keep the crispness in the stroke. Using a strong black ink for light grey would mean more water, which would change the look of the stroke. On another note, the bluish black might be good for painting a night sky. Be well madam.

Oh, it's like one of those theoretical questions you answer, similar to 'what would you do if you won the lottery?' 'If you had to throw a dinner party and you could invite anyone you wanted, from the past or the present, then who would you invite?' So, I would invite you, David Mitchell, Elizabeth I, Jonie Mitchell, Julia Child, Aristotle, Eddie Izzard and many others.... you get the idea.
