While I was running in Eastern British Columbia I came across a most affable of creature. This creature was in fact so social that it came over to greet me. I was not very impressed with its assertive display at hello and left quickly.

What's even more scary is the fact that the other PEOPLE in that same forest didn't realize that there was a grizzy bear nearby.

You'd be surprised on how often your in proximity to a bear when you live in bear country. They can smell for miles. They know where humans are. They just rarely bother us.
@thobrik
@thobrik 5 жыл бұрын
If you're running in the woods of British Columbia, you're bound to run upon one of the 15 000 grizzlys that live there one time or another. And you're probably either gonna surprise them, or trigger a predatory response because you're running - neither of which is great for surviving. Hiking is one thing, but running, alone, with seemingly no bear spray or anything at hand? Hard pass from me!

When in the outdoors, you will have no idea most of the animals, including bears are there. Most of the time bears too will flee if they become aware of your presence. They typically want nothing to do with humans.

Bears generally aren’t predators. That’s why they eat people alive unlike cats which kill their prey first. A bear can definitely run faster than him but it’s not like he should stop running and let the bear know he shouldn’t be eaten. He’d probably have to be pretty hungry to chase the runner when it’s already moving away and that bear was already munching on some shrubs. He’s def lucky tho you don’t wanna get caught by bear

+Shaun SW You should never run if you encounter a bear. That`s extremely dangerous. You were lucky to get out of this situation alive. If you run in a area were there are bears you should carry pepper spray for protection, and make a lot of noise so that you scare away potential bears. You probably panicked in this situation, and i`m sure i would have done the same thing if a bear came sneaking up on me like this one did to you, but try to make noise when you run in areas where there`s bears. This bear just wanted to chase you away, she didn`t want to kill you, but by running you could have triggered her hunting instinct.

FrekeOne Carry bear spray and keep iPod out of your ears (you can still hear the music and surroundings). Cough around blind corners or blow a whistle. My iPod makes me comfortable enough that the bear will hear me. If the wind is in your face, they will not smell you coming. Your course of action if confronted by a brown vs. black bear are different if you are attacked; otherwise calmly talk to the bear while backing away and have your bear spray in hand. Grizz Mom w/cubs will certainly attack if you're in close range. Play dead, cover your neck and lift your knees to your chest. Black bear Mom w/cubs will almost always retreat. If a black bear attacks, you must fight. Playing dead does not work w/a black bear.

Daniel Eikefjord if you climb a tree he can climb it too, plus you don't have nowhere to run. Best thing is try to use trees and rocks around you to obstacle him and even better drop your backpack, bottle, gloves, helmet or anything you have on you, there's a good chance he will stop to check if it's something he can eat.

Bill Steinbach III no I wouldn’t. I grew up hiking in grizzly country and know that turning your back to a predator while in its line of sight is the worst thing you can do. Triggers the killing instinct as it proves you are prey. There was a group of college students hiking in New Jersey in 2014 and they ran into a black bear. Black bears are very rare there, and they are more timid. This bear was curious, and the students filmed it walking towards them. The group could have easily scared it off as it came to investigate them by yelling at it and working together. Instead all these kids turned and ran and the curious bear chased them. It caught the slowest and fattest one and ate him alive. RIP Darsh Patel. Sorry you had such shitty friends. His death was so needless because if the group had just shouted and backed away slowly all would have survived.

People seem to think predators will attack you regardless if they see you.. Usually they will only attack if startled or hungry, but of course there are many other reasons and it's up to you to risk it. But killing prey is difficult so most animals will only do it when necessary so keep calm, keep your distanse and don't draw attention. (I know this is very easy to write from a toilet seat) but more times than not follow those steps and you will be fine

Not on that terrain. We have advantage on uneven/mountain terrain and that one was full of up an downs, water, rocks, etc. There are even marathons where people run in the mountains versus horses an they win. Ofc, on straight terrain a horse destroys us.

That's exactly what I would have said - "Holy Shit" and would have left a brown trail behind. I'm sure you were not planning to do intervals that day! Beautiful place!
