@SMack I hunt moose and deer, mostly. I have hunted black bear, caribou and pronghorn antelope. Every year I shoot about a dozen or so grouse. I have taken the meat from each and every one. I have also had mounts made. The pronghorn in particular has magnificent horns. But that's not why I shot it. The horns were simply a bonus. Before taking the shot, all I knew was that it was a mature male. I suppose I could always leave the entire head to rot but if the hunt was particularly memorable for any one of a number of reasons, I will cape out the head and take the antlers/horns. None of my mounted specimens is anywhere near a record book trophy. Except for the pronghorn, they are quite average. Yet they represent something to me that I want to keep. Every time I look at them, memories come back. Usually, the memory has nothing to do with the actually shooting. It might just be sitting around the campfire, telling partially true stories. It might be eating fried potato and venison back at base camp when you are so hungry you were about to eat your boots. "Grub in the guts." As one hunting buddy's brother said during a moose hunt when sitting around the campfire drinking a wee dram, "Millionaires can't buy what we have right here." You either get it or you don't.

Tough to go into the alders when you know there is a wounded bear in there, but I disagree with your statement. Not 99 percent, maybe 50 percent.

I agree , outstanding video. Myself and some friends experienced a similar situation on a black bear in Canada. A hunt I'll never forget. I could remember the tension I experienced as I was watching ....great job.

When ever I find myself reacting calmly in a harrowing situation I say a thank you prayer to my father. Some of us really lucked out.

Oh yeah, it doesn't get any more dangerous than tracking a wounded bear in thick cover. They are very smart animals, they will set up an ambush to get you. Some scientists think bears intelligence is on par with primates. Terrifyingly intelligent animals. Kudos to these guys 👍💯

Good job! Not unlike taking point in Vietnam. I have had experience with black bear...a bit like being hit with a lightening bolt, after it is all said and done. During the attack, there is only one focus. And that is to make your shot count, if one is lucky enough to get to get one. I always pray before entering in that type situation. Nerves of steel men. You earned your $ that day!

I'll try to give you an idea but I know it wont answer your question completely. A bear that eats a lot of meat in general smells stronger than a bear that eats berries and grass or has a mix of both in its diet. A strong smelling animal is often a carnivore but not always. Deer and horses can have a distinct smell. I shot a very good size black bear years ago that smelled less than my dog when my dog was clean. I was very surprised. The smell comes from the body and breath. The strong smell is like a musk odor but different. It's a strong animal smell that you can pick in a zoo. In French the expression is "fauve" a lion smells fauve, so do many wild animals. It implies a strong, distinct tawny smell.

I will try and give you an idea of the odor than can come from an animal? I've participated and been around The kill be it bear, antelope, deer or elk and never really took notice of an odor except it smells like an animal. When you get in the vicinity of say an elk it will very often smell like a barnyard, antelope if they've been running will have a very strong sagee smell it greatly depends upon what the animal has been eating, however your question brings to mind a particular hunt about 50 years ago. My husband killed a bear, I was just there but never really touched the bear. On the way home we stopped at the Local Tavern, I went in and bought a six pack of beer. Standing there in line I noticed I ended up being the only one by the cash register even the people in front of me had moved 😲, I didn't understand what was happening until I ran into a friend outside and he commented on my odor, LOL. I guess that was a particularly rank bear only I didn't realize it but everybody else did🤣
