Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 3 March 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Bushwacked and suffering from amnesia, Hoss is found wandering down the road by the Vandervorts, an older couple who are happy to take the gentle giant into their family to replace the son they lost. But when Ben comes looking for his missing son, the Vandervorts lie about seeing him and refuse to tell Hoss who he really is, planning to take him to Michigan with them and away from his real family, and the Ponderosa, for good. Written by shepherd1138 on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"In this Bonanza story Dan Blocker is assaulted and robbed of everything including his memory. When husband and wife immigrant Dutch farmers find him Blocker has some severe amnesia.
Robert Emhardt and Signe Hasso are the farmers and they lost their son and Hasso is quite willing to adopt Blocker as their own. Even after Lorne Greene comes calling looking for his lost middle son.
This was a really tender and gentle episode with Hasso just wonderful as the grieving mother." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Ben shows his true paternal love for his son: he'd rather be away from Hoss than causing him any pain. As for the couple, who wouldn't like to have a son like Hoss? The themes of Bonanza are full of humanity, this show is unforgettable!

@@jadezee6316 When it comes to writing and developing a story line for fictional TV shows, it's not always easy. In fact, I don't think it ever is. The writers are trying to find that delicate balance between reality and fantasy for entertainment. Many times they are doing that while addressing social issues that the audience may be grappling with. In this case, it seems they were addressing the challenges of trauma resulting in memory loss and the difficulties and dangers that a patient with this problem has. It is important to note however that Ben didn't really give up on his son. May be the writers had to make it seem that way for the sake of the story line, but Ben's actions show a father desperate to fight for his son and do what is best for him, even at great pain to himself as a father.

In 1957, six years before this 1963 Bonanza Episode, Karl, the only child of Swedish guest star Signe Hasso (1915-2002), died in an automobile accident. Karl was 22 years old at the time of his death. Looking at her, in this episode, I can see her grief pain, and holding back tears, as she performs in a parallel story to her own life.

The Hendrics at the table talk about being from Holland, but Holland Michigan. is a huge Dutch community by where I live 40 miles from there, and they do a traditional Tulip Day festival every year, they celebrate by having everyone sweep the streets clean, plant tens of thousands of tulips in uncountable tulip beds, even the Holland windmill, yes, a working windmill is in pristine condition, and it really does work. I have toured it several times. It is about a 35-minute drive south of where my sister's family lives, in Grand Haven, Michigan. They also mentioned Hope College which is huge and famous in the Holland area. God bless.

Min. 6:14 - "Klaas Vandervort" is written on that woodboard. It's Dutch and the meaning is "Klaus from the Fort". I know that the Dutch people founded New York (Nieuw Amsterdam) and they spread all over US. The Dutch community is a quiet and hard working one.

I have been watching videos of Near Death Experiences, of people who have died and returned to this physical life. Many NDE'rs talk about how people here on Earth have forgotten how much they are Loved by God. This episode of Ben's love for his son who does not remember him but will let him leave because trying to make him remember his family is a reminder of some of those NDE stories at Heaven Awaits channel on utube. It helps to remind me that my service dog who passed on is alive in spirit in Heaven and waits for me to join her and her predecessor at the gateway vision that was given me. Ben Cartwright cared and loved his son more than the pain of Hoss's going away, perhaps forever. This is a very powerful lesson of Love, not to be forgotten.

I wish I had the patience to read all 230 comments and replies o them, but I get too restless and impatient for that. When the Vandervorts are leaving, they find out from Ben that his son Hoss has regained his memory. When Hoss comes down the stairs, Ben introduced him as his third son. How the writer/s made that error amazes me, assuming it was an error. Adam was his firstborn child, Hoss (Eric) was his second, and Joseph (Little Joe) was his third. If anyone can confirm the birth order or explain how Hoss could be Ben's third son, I'd be pleased to read it. A Stranger Passed This Way was much deeper than most episodes of other series based in the West. I was impressed that so many questions could be raised by the actions and behaviors of people. I felt for the woman who had lost her only child but was upset when she felt that it entitled her to take advantage of a man who could not remember who he was or where he came from. The writer did a superb job of interweaving so much into one 48-minute episode and making it so apparent how lacking in such understanding and compassion are missing from our current batch of shows. We are indebted to folks like Grjngo who are able to upload many shows from earlier years when programming was head and shoulders above current fare.

I believe that Ben was making a point to Mrs. Vandervorts that Hoss was his son also. Ben had already introduced Adam and Joe as his two son's. Hoss did not know them he had no memory of the Vandervorts so Ben introduced Hoss as his 3rd son because they did not know Hoss. Everyone was starting fresh from the beginning. Does that make since? One thing about these old shows writers didn't leave plot holes and continuity gaps.

This is a great show!! Some are Bible-based and teaches moral values. Michael Landon carried these characteristics over into "Littlie House and Highway to Heaven." I don't know if anyone got or noticed two things: 1. The major message is the same message as the story of Solomon and the Two Mothers that is in the Holy Bible. 2. Take a look at what happens with the picture frame after Ben knocks it on the floor; he did not even reach down far enough to pick it up off the floor, yet it is in his hand. It looked like he picked it up off another table or someone passed it to him. (He must have had a bad back that day.) I love looking at details in a show plus the major plot and finding usual things.

I didnt like the lady though I felt sorry for her at end of episode...to me, she was rather selfish...she just wanted Hoss to replace loss of her own son. She should understand how Ben Cartwright might feel losing a son as she had been thru that pain. My tears dropped when Hoss recognised his dad...Bonanza's episodes really could affect our emotions😐

She was completely selfish! She tried to STEAL Hoss from his real father. Shame on her!

@@BlackangelKatakuri Over the years, he probably had more than one horse, but his horse was known as Chubby. Example: Marshall Dillion got a new horse every year and they were all named Buck. Festus' mule was always Ruth whether male or female.

You are right about the birth order. I believe that Ben introduced the two sons he had with him and then was telling them that Hoss is then his third son. The birthing order isn't important here. I couldn't believe she actually said that Ben had two sons already, and tells Ben that it was morally his duty to give them one of his sons!! If I had 20 children I would always keep my children. Shameful behaviour for a mother and father.
