Full Western Episode starring Parnell Roberts published in 1964: Bonanza - Episode 172 - Thanks for Everything, Friend - Tom Wilson saves Adam from drowning. This begins a friendship he starts to regret when Tom steals a girl from her longtime boyfriend, is found with her father's open strongbox and standing over his dead body.
Thanks for Everything, Friend
Director: Christian Nyby
Writer: Jerry Adelman
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 11 October 1964 USA
Filming Locations: Kern River, California, USA
Storyline:
Adam Cartwright is rescued from drowning by Tom Wilson (Rory Calhoun), a man as lucky at cards as he is at love. Though grateful to Tom, Adam looks askance when Tom moves in on Matilda (Barbara Wilkin), the girlfriend of a man named Jerry (Tom Skerritt). When Tom is accused of killing Matilda's father, Adam tries to prove his innocence-a task that proves deceptively easy when Sue makes an all-too-convenient confession. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"A pretty good character study episode, centering on Tom Wilson (Rory Calhoun) a handsome drifter who saves Adam from drowning after he's fallen into a fast flowing river during the rescue of a calf.
This is an "Adam" episode in which he is gradually forced to see the serious flaws in Wilson, the man he owes his life to. Wilson is a person with no ethical moorings, one whose moral compass must be very rusty, if he ever had one at all; someone who goes through life in the easiest way possible, who will use and discard others, while avoiding hard work, getting along by taking what life offers, with no qualms about dubious or illegal means being required to meet his ends; a man with the fortunate advantages of strong fists, a quick mind, a glib gift of the gab (he can tell a good joke!) and a magnetic allure for women which suits his Don Juan tendencies. For Wilson, life is about amusing himself, and his rescue of Adam (which he approaches in a meandering, easy going manner, without any indications of urgency or concern, giving us some early hints about the sort of person he is ) we come to see is something he does because he thinks it will be to his advantage, rather than from any altruistic motivation. Certain incidents - stealing, cheating at cards, carrying on with a Cartwright pal's girlfriend - force Adam to reevaluate the man he had liked and wanted for a friend, and eventually he has to confront the awful truth that Wilson is also a murderer.
Tom Skerritt, who would appear as Little Joe's would be nemesis in the final "Bonanza" episode in 1972, here plays the part of the young man whose girl (played by the very cute Linda Foster) falls head over heels for Wilson. It looks as if women tend to chase Tom Wilson rather than the other way round - an infatuated saloon girl is perpetually draped over him in some scenes - and he's happy to oblige if they suit him.
It's fitting that the episode comes full circle, and the climactic events take place by and in the river, near the spot where Tom Wilson had rescued Adam." Written by zippgun on IMDb.com

What cracks me up the most about this episode is, that they send Pernell Roberts down the river himself! I've been in trouble capsized with my kayak on the Illinois river once and watched many people having to be rescued from in- and outgoing tides on the North Sea. Underestimating the force of water can be deadly. 6" of water rushing over a flooded roadway can wash away a car. From me: kudos to Pernell for doing that scene himself. I'm pretty sure he didn't have to act a whole lot when he was trying to get out of the river, he HAD TO have been tired! And he WAS coughing up real water, you just watched him swallow it as he was getting closer to the shore and struggled with the circulating current there (can't think of the English term for that right now to save my life...) "He was one of a kind...." One of my favorite episodes.

This was a superb episode, one of my all-time favorites. Pernell Roberts delivers yet another fine performance, ably demonstrating his character's Adam Cartwright's deep humanity, high intelligence and coolness under fire. And Rory Calhoun excelled in his role of the devilishly smooth rogue Tom Wilson. Those who regard Calhoun as wooden and second-rate should watch him play effectively and with great finesse this complex character. Kudos to him and to a very young Tom Skerritt. The entire cast was in great form. Great script, acting and directing. A 10, for sure. Many thanks again for airing another fine episode.

@AE Ok, I'm listening...how was he a "Diva"? and "Self destructive"? David Dortort the Producer of the show admitted years later that he had been too hard on Pernell and "He enhanced every scene he was in"! Pernell was promised progression and diversity in the role of Adam...that didn't happen and he became disillusioned! He approached Dortort on different occasions with ideas including allowing the character of Adam to marry and to have a separate added part of Bonanza also with the idea that he could do other things in the interim but the answer was "No" .Dortort also admitted that all the Bonanza Characters could be difficult and each caused as you say "Diva" qualities in their own right! Pernell after 6 years needed to move on, He needed more and to progress in his craft. Lorne Greene tried to persuade him to stay stating the money they made could "build his own theatre"! Pernell was not held back by the money and he left! He gave us 6 GREAT YEARS of ADAM! Over time Pernell was in over 60 TV shows..I won't list them all but you can check them for yourself plus many films! This man was a caring man who walked the walk believing that all people had the right to DIGNITY! He paraded in 1963 with a placard for " Fair housing for all" and followed through on his beliefs saying " someone in the public eye needs to stand up and be counted"! I don't see many DIVA'S doing that! He wasn't perfect...who is? He took on the role of Trapper John in 1979 at the age of 51 because then he needed to look to his financial future after seeing his Fathers health decline and wanted to support himself and his family! This man followed his heart and beliefs no matter what anyone else thought! He died much loved in 2010! By the way did you know he paid for Victor Sen Yung's funeral (Hop Sing) and read the Eulogy? This man was not a Diva but a TRUE humanitarian, a passionate activist and a wonderful actor, Gentleman and human being!! I'm waiting for your Response...and your proof of your statement!

I believe, w/out a doubt, that Pernell Roberts was all the best of Bonanza. I never watched the series for years, many years, after "Adam" left at the end of 6 years into the series. Hoss I liked a lot but they made him the clown in the family, the youngest one was immature, a fight every week, an uncontrollable temper...I never cared for Landon in there. I look for the episodes with Adam or Hoss when they are the main leads or star player in a story. Adam was the most intelligent, very fine actor and the way he handled himself all the time was a huge plus for the show.

Pernell Roberts did his OWN river stunts in this episode. I wonder what the insurance company covering him - as an actor at Paramount Studios - had to say about that ?!
@Hollystein

I lived there and swam those rivers…he is clearly touching bottom from the way he’s bobbing at the beginning . The river is not deep: you can see the swells from the rocks. It’s really easy to fake. He could have stood up…

@@Hollystein I went white water rafting once - and that water "wasn't very deep" either - and the last thing they tell you to do is " just stand up" !! It's very easy to get your foot lodged between the rocks, then swept off your feet, and drowned in that rushing water....Glad you survived. It barely can take a minute to drown in such waters....Guess you were just lucky there.

Did you happen to see his bald head? It's a very brief shot around 1:28 mark. When he is being swept away, Pernell's hairpiece comes off. In the next shot, it's back on. I just watched a video about that. Pernell never wanted to wear a hairpiece. He went to the producers at the beginning and said he didn't want to wear one, but the producers said he looked younger with the hairpiece. I guess they didn't want Adam to look the same age as pa.🤨

The name Rory Calhoun sounded familiar, but I don't know where I've heard it. Anyway, this was my first time seeing him act. He played an interesting character, a selfish scoundrel ultimately, but I loved the interplay between him and Adam. Awesome.

You got great eyes, there is one in the great movie THE UNDEFEATED with John wayne. I think right after the harmonica playing across the river at the end of the movie there is a pick up truck moving it's near John's left arm. If you can, watch the movie and let me know if you see it. 156.59 is where it is.

It sometimes takes me a minute to figure out where I have seen them before, then I remember and have to try and recall what character they appeared as. ;) this time it was the reverse, trying to realize where I've seen the guest star lol....being a western movie fan, how could I have not recognized Rory Calhoun? He has some similarities with Mr. Mario Lanza -the Tenor . Side view when Mario Lanza was smiling both had same facial view similarities and the voices . if Adam has more Training in Opera, he could be more successful , he was a good singer and a theater actor. He was very talented but not given the chance during his days in Bonanza . Both Parnell Roberts - ( Adam Catright in Bonanza ) & Mario Lanza had their own unique voice and singing in heaven. ❤️🌸🌺🌹🙏🇨🇦👌🦜🇺🇸
