Thanks for the price update. I believe that to the ratio of the Azorean minimum wage, grocery prices are expensive. For a Canadian like myself, the prices there are cheap compared to Canada’s. If I went out and bought everything you did here in Canada at a local No Frills grocery store, it would cost $200-300 Canadian. When my family and I were there in March of this year, I personally found most things cheap compared to Canada, especially wine and beer. A bottle of wine at Pingo Doçe from the Douro was about 3 euros. The same bottle in Canada costs $14 Canadian dollars. Eating out in São Miguel is also much cheaper. We went to O Galego. 4 of us ate well with appetizers and alcohol and the bill came to about 90 euros. If I take my family to the Keg, a steakhouse here in Canada, and we ate as we ate there, it would cost me about $250 Canadian dollars. Lastly, we found the quality of the food and produce much better in the Azores. Love São Miguel and hope to move there one day. Thanks again Rose for sharing yours life on São Miguel with us. Love your channel.

Yes! When I came from Canada I had the same impression! Things are cheaper compared to Canada. But when you compare it to how much we earn an hour, it's expensive for us. So yes, for a tourist, it's very affordable. But for us locals, not as much. Minimum wage is about 5 euros an hour here. Thanks so much for all the support! Im so happy to have you here! 😊

Hi Rosie nice to see another of your videos when compared to here the food prices and cost of living is much cheaper then here but even dough everything here is very expensive its better living abroad then there when people visit it’s very different then living permanently there to spend a 100 euros in groceries it takes most people two days of wages here I earn close to 200 in a day that is the big difference i left at 13 and love being there but it’s only good for retirees not for young people but if there is no way to leave you have to stay ❤

Seeing a lot of comments about price comparisons with Canada. Canada is not what it was when my parents came here in the 1950’s. I was born here in the 70’s. Canada was once the greatest country in the world. Now there are as many people leaving as there is coming. Minimum wage is around $16/hour Canadian but a 1 bedroom apartment anywhere in the greater Toronto area starts at $2000/month. If you want to buy a home, expect to pay well over $1000000. Taxes here are crazy high. Income taxes, Property taxes, sales taxes, gasoline taxes, carbon taxes. It never ends. Groceries for one is over $100/week. Cell phone service is over $60/month. Auto insurance is super expensive. Eating out is super expensive. An individual needs to earn net at least $4000/month to survive. I have a family of 4 and with all my expenses including mortgage, property taxes, utilities, groceries, car expenses, etc. we spend over $6000/ month on average. I have to work 50 plus hours a week to maintain this lifestyle. Our health care system use to be the best. Now you have to wait hours in an emergency, months for any procedure or to see a doctor, and not everything is covered anymore. Crime is out of control. We are the car theft capital of the world. Speaking of cars, traffic here is out of control. It takes me longer to drive 5km here than it did for me to drive 50km there. Canada also has some of the highest rates of depression. I use to love this country and I’m always hoping things will improve but unfortunately it is only getting worse. The United States isn’t much better other than they pay a lot less taxes and the costs of somethings are lower. Believe me Rose, you ain’t missing anything. I envy you. São Miguel is the greenest most tranquil place I have ever visited. Really appreciated the pace and stress free life there. The climate is also almost perfect. The air quality and food quality there is so much better which adds to better health. My Canadian born Kids want to move there too. It's global. It's getting bad everywhere. But it comes down to personal preference. You can't runaway from a global inflation. We just have to learn to adjust. Life isn't going to be easy anywhere. But we can't let it consume us. A lot of people are moving to the Azores. If it's what you want, you should go after your dreams. Thanks so much for the input!

So what brought you to Sao Miguel from Canada and how long you been there? Are you there full time? Don't get me wrong, I'm dying to do the same. Unfortunately, I make great money in Canada for what I do as a diesel mechanic. Doesn't pay so much in Sao Miguel. I asked a mechanic there lol.

Well if I had a choice I would be in Canada or even the states! I've seen so many people wanting to move here, but the economy is really bad. It's very discouraging. While people are wishing to move here, I'm wishing to move out. Lol don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful Island, calm lifestyle. But I prefer the American/ Canadian lifestyle. That's my personal preference. I had no choice when coming back, I was a minor at the time, so where my parents went, I had to go along. But I also don't have dual citizenship. I'm just Portuguese. Makes it harder to make the move. Thanks so much for always being here! I appreciate you!! Your job seems interesting! Unfortunately you are right. A lot of careers aren't paid well enough here. It's very unfortunate.

@@lifewithrosie03 Wow interesting back story! I, like many Canadians, are mentally checked out of Canada. Especially Ontario. Things have gotten especially bad here. But I understand the attractiveness to North American life. I'm thankful and lucky I was born here. But I love my Portuguese culture I love my family and friends there. Something is calling me to go back to my roots. Alas I have to wait for retirement. I applied for my Portuguese citizenship through my parents. And I'm getting married in Sao Miguel in 2026. Thanks for your very informative videos. You do the best job showing cost of living and life on the island. Muito obrigado outre vez Rosie!
